Gusto is a payroll, benefits, and HR platform for small and growing U.S. businesses. Its public 2026 plans cost $49 per month plus $6 per person (Simple), $80 plus $12 per person (Plus), or $180 plus $22 per person (Premium). Simple covers basic single-state payroll; Plus adds multi-state payroll, time tracking, scheduling, and next-day pay; Premium adds dedicated support, HR guidance, compliance tools, same-day and instant pay, project costing, and expanded payment allowances.
For a small employer that wants payroll, tax filing, onboarding, benefits administration, and employee self-service in one system, Gusto can replace several disconnected workflows. The right tier depends mainly on the number of states you operate in, whether employees need time and scheduling tools, and how much HR and compliance assistance you expect.
Gusto pricing in 2026
Gusto’s publicly listed 2026 prices use a monthly platform fee plus a per-person charge. “Person” means each worker included in the account, so your recurring bill rises as you add employees or contractors. The prices below are the published base rates; benefits, workers’ compensation, retirement services, and other add-ons can have separate costs.
| Plan | Monthly base | Per person | Payroll and HR scope | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | $49 | $6 | Unlimited payroll runs, tax filings and payments, basic PTO policies, holiday pay, and single-state payroll | Small teams operating in one state with straightforward payroll |
| Plus | $80 | $12 | Everything in Simple, plus multi-state payroll, unlimited next-day pay, time tracking, scheduling, and contractor invoice management | Employers with multiple states or hourly teams |
| Premium | $180 | $22 | Everything in Plus, plus premium account support, HR guidance and tools, Gusto Business Compliance, unlimited same-day and instant pay, project rules and costing, and 25 included invoice payments or bank transfers | Businesses that need higher-touch support and formal HR or compliance help |
Gusto advertises these plans as having “No hidden fees. Cancel any time.” Its help-center language describes the plans as month-to-month, with no long-term contract. That does not mean every service is included in the base subscription: confirm pricing for benefits, insurance, retirement, or other optional services before enrolling.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How much does Gusto cost per employee?
Use this formula for the recurring subscription: monthly base + (number of people × per-person rate). For example, a 10-person account would cost $109 per month on Simple ($49 + 10 × $6), $200 on Plus ($80 + 10 × $12), or $400 on Premium ($180 + 10 × $22), before add-ons or any applicable service charges.
| People on account | Simple | Plus | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | $79/month | $140/month | $290/month |
| 10 | $109/month | $200/month | $400/month |
| 25 | $199/month | $380/month | $730/month |
These examples apply only the published base and per-person rates. They are not quotes, do not include optional products, and do not account for a state-specific or service-specific charge that may appear during setup.
What Gusto does
Gusto combines payroll calculation with the administrative tasks that usually surround payroll. The platform’s described capabilities include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Payroll processing: Calculate wages, run payroll as often as needed, and support direct deposit and worker payments.
- Tax work: File and pay payroll taxes, and support year-end W-2 and 1099 workflows.
- Employee and contractor payments: Pay employees and contractors and manage contractor invoices on Plus and Premium.
- Employee self-service: Give workers access to pay information and related tools, including the Gusto Wallet employee app.
- Hiring and onboarding: Collect new-hire information and move employees into the payroll workflow.
- Time and attendance: Plus and Premium include time tracking and scheduling capabilities.
- Benefits administration: The platform can support medical, dental, and vision benefits, HSA and FSA administration, 401(k), commuter benefits, workers’ compensation, and life or disability coverage. Availability and pricing depend on the plan, add-on, and location.
- HR assistance: Premium adds HR guidance, tools, compliance support, and a higher-touch support model.
This breadth is the main reason to consider Gusto: a business can keep payroll, employee records, benefits administration, and basic HR tasks in one workflow instead of exporting data among separate systems. Feature access is tier-dependent, and some benefits or insurance products require an additional enrollment or service charge.
Simple: the single-state starting point
Simple is designed for an employer with a relatively uncomplicated workforce in one state. It includes unlimited payroll runs, tax filings and payments, basic paid-time-off policies, and holiday pay. The unlimited-run allowance is useful when you need an off-cycle correction, a bonus payroll, or another run outside your normal schedule.

- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The defining restriction is geography: Simple is for single-state payroll. If employees work in more than one state, or you expect to expand across state lines soon, price Plus before committing to Simple. Moving plans later may be straightforward, but setting up additional state registrations and withholding requirements still takes planning.
Plus: the practical tier for growing teams
Plus is the plan where Gusto’s operational features become substantially broader. It adds multi-state payroll, unlimited next-day pay, time tracking, scheduling, and contractor invoice management. These features matter when payroll depends on hours worked, shifts, locations, or a mixed employee-and-contractor workforce.
When multi-state payroll changes the decision
Multi-state payroll is not merely a convenience. Each state can have different withholding, registration, wage, and filing requirements. Plus is the first listed tier that explicitly supports payroll across multiple states, so it is the relevant comparison for a company with remote employees or offices in more than one state.
When time tracking and scheduling justify Plus
If employees enter hours, trade shifts, or work variable schedules, keeping time data beside payroll reduces manual re-entry. Plus includes time tracking and scheduling; the published plan description does not promise that every industry-specific scheduling rule or advanced workforce feature is included, so verify your exact workflow during setup.
Next-day pay
Plus includes unlimited next-day pay. This is distinct from Premium’s same-day and instant-pay allowance: next-day pay means an eligible payroll can be delivered on the following business day under the service’s operating rules, while same-day or instant delivery is a faster option available on Premium.
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Premium: support, compliance, and faster payment options
Premium costs $180 per month plus $22 per person and is aimed at employers that value assistance as much as software. It adds premium account support, HR guidance and tools, Gusto Business Compliance, unlimited same-day and instant pay, project-based rules and costing, and 25 included invoice payments or bank transfers.

Premium is the appropriate tier when a payroll administrator wants a named or higher-touch support relationship and access to certified HR expertise rather than relying mainly on self-service documentation. The plan’s HR guidance can help a growing company build repeatable processes, but it does not transfer legal responsibility for employment decisions to the software provider.
Compliance tools
Gusto Business Compliance is listed as a Premium feature. Compliance tools can help organize required tasks and information, yet requirements vary by state, city, industry, and workforce classification. Treat the feature as an operational aid, not as a substitute for advice from a qualified employment attorney or tax professional when a situation is unusual or disputed.
Project costing and payment allowances
Premium supports project-based rules and costing, which is useful when labor must be assigned to jobs, clients, or internal projects. It also includes 25 invoice payments or bank transfers. If you regularly exceed that allowance, calculate the cost of additional transactions before selecting Premium solely for project accounting.
Benefits, retirement, and employee financial tools
Gusto’s benefits scope extends beyond payroll. Described offerings include medical, dental, and vision plans; HSA and FSA administration; 401(k); commuter benefits; workers’ compensation; and life or disability coverage. Availability is not universal: plan level, state, carrier participation, and enrollment choices affect what you can actually offer.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The Gusto Wallet employee app gives workers a way to interact with their pay and financial information. That can reduce routine questions for an administrator, but employees still need clear instructions about pay dates, deductions, benefit elections, and any limitations of the financial tools they choose.
For a benefits-heavy implementation, ask for a written quote that separates the subscription from premiums, administration fees, insurance charges, and retirement costs. The published plan prices alone are not a complete benefits budget.
Payroll and HR workflow: what implementation involves
A successful rollout is mostly a data and compliance project, not just an account-creation exercise. Use this sequence to avoid preventable corrections.
- Choose the operating scope. List every state where employees work, identify employees versus contractors, and decide whether you need hourly time tracking, scheduling, benefits, retirement, or project costing.
- Select the plan. Use Simple only for a single-state payroll. Choose Plus when multi-state payroll or time and scheduling are required. Choose Premium when dedicated support, HR guidance, compliance tools, same-day or instant pay, or project costing justify the higher fee.
- Gather employer records. Prepare your legal business name, tax identification details, bank information, state account numbers, work locations, pay schedules, and authorized administrator information.
- Import worker data. Enter names, addresses, tax forms, compensation, deductions, classifications, start dates, and direct-deposit details. Confirm that each person is classified correctly before the first run.
- Configure policies. Set pay schedules, PTO rules, holiday pay, overtime handling, approval responsibilities, and any project or location codes. For hourly teams, map the time-tracking and scheduling workflow before employees begin entering hours.
- Set up taxes and payments. Verify state registrations, withholding settings, filing responsibilities, bank verification, and direct-deposit timing. Resolve missing registration numbers before scheduling the first payroll.
- Add benefits and retirement. Compare available medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA, 401(k), commuter, workers’ compensation, and life or disability options. Document employee eligibility, waiting periods, deductions, and carrier contacts.
- Run a controlled test. Review a draft payroll for gross wages, taxes, deductions, employer contributions, net pay, and accounting allocations. Correct discrepancies before approval rather than after funds are sent.
- Communicate the employee process. Tell workers how to complete onboarding, review pay information, use self-service tools, submit time, and ask benefits questions. A short written checklist prevents many first-payday issues.
- Reconcile after launch. Compare payroll reports with the bank account and general ledger, confirm tax filings, and keep a calendar for future filing dates, benefit renewals, and worker changes.
How to choose between Simple, Plus, and Premium
| Your situation | Most suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One state, salaried or straightforward hourly payroll, limited HR needs | Simple | Lowest published base and per-person fee with unlimited payroll and tax filing |
| Employees in two or more states | Plus | Multi-state payroll is explicitly included starting at this tier |
| Hourly workforce needing schedules and time capture | Plus | Time tracking and scheduling are listed Plus features |
| Regular contractor invoices | Plus or Premium | Contractor invoice management is listed on both higher tiers |
| Need an advisor, HR guidance, or compliance tools | Premium | Those services are Premium differentiators |
| Need same-day or instant pay | Premium | Premium lists unlimited same-day and instant pay |
| Need project-level labor costing | Premium | Project-based rules and costing are included at this tier |
Do not choose solely by the headline subscription. Estimate your average and peak headcount, count states, model contractor volume, and price every benefit or service add-on. A cheaper plan can become the more expensive choice if it forces manual scheduling, separate time software, or outside HR support.
Contracts, cancellation, and the contractor-only question
Gusto’s help-center wording says plans are month-to-month, have no long-term contract, and can be canceled at any time. The pricing page makes the same broad promise with “Cancel any time.” Before canceling, export payroll reports, tax filings, employee records, benefit details, and year-to-date totals you may need for audits or year-end forms.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
There is an unresolved inconsistency about contractor-only service. Public pricing pages still display a contractor-only option, while an official help article says that plan was no longer available as of October 1, 2026. Because those pages conflict, do not assume a contractor-only account can be purchased. Check the live account or checkout flow and obtain confirmation from Gusto before planning around it.
Costs and requirements to verify before signing up
- Headcount definition: Confirm which employees, contractors, owners, or inactive workers count toward the per-person fee.
- State coverage: Verify that every state where workers perform services is supported and that required registrations can be completed.
- Add-on pricing: Request separate prices for benefits administration, 401(k), workers’ compensation, insurance, time or payment services, and any other optional product.
- Payment timing: Check bank-verification lead time and the cutoff for next-day, same-day, or instant pay.
- Included transactions: Premium includes 25 invoice payments or bank transfers; ask how additional transactions are priced.
- Support scope: Clarify what premium support covers, the response channel, and whether HR guidance applies to your locations and workforce size.
- Data export: Ask how to retrieve payroll, tax, benefits, and employee records if you later change providers.
Common pitfalls and practical fixes
Choosing Simple after hiring in another state
Symptom: A new remote employee creates state-tax and registration work that the selected tier does not address. Fix: Recheck state coverage before the hire date and move to Plus if multi-state payroll is required.
Assuming benefits are included in the subscription
Symptom: The base invoice looks affordable, but insurance, retirement, or administration charges change the budget. Fix: Separate subscription, premiums, and service fees in your cost model and request written terms.
Expecting Premium to replace legal advice
Symptom: An employer treats compliance prompts or HR guidance as a legal determination. Fix: Use the tools to organize tasks, then seek qualified professional advice for disputed, unusual, or high-risk employment matters.
Missing payroll cutoffs
Symptom: A payroll intended for next-day, same-day, or instant delivery arrives later than expected. Fix: Confirm bank verification, approval deadlines, holidays, and employee eligibility before promising a pay date.
Relying on conflicting contractor information
Symptom: A contractor-only workflow cannot be selected despite appearing on a public page. Fix: Check the live checkout or account interface and confirm availability directly before migration.
Is Gusto worth it for a small business?
Gusto is a strong fit when your priority is a unified U.S. payroll-and-HR workflow rather than a highly specialized enterprise system. Simple is economical for one-state employers that mainly need payroll and tax filing. Plus is the practical middle ground for multi-state or hourly operations. Premium earns its higher recurring price when an owner or administrator values dedicated assistance, HR guidance, compliance organization, faster pay options, or project costing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is less compelling when you operate outside the United States, need unusually complex workforce rules that are not described in the plan summaries, or want a bare payroll service with no interest in benefits or HR features. In those cases, compare providers on geographic coverage, integrations, implementation support, and total cost rather than on the monthly base alone.
Quick Recap

- Do you need scheduling, time tracking, contractor invoices, or project costing?
- Which benefits and retirement programs must be administered?
- Do you need self-service support, a dedicated advisor, or formal compliance tools?
