Gusto’s 2026 employee plans start at $49 per month plus $6 per person. Simple is built for single-state payroll, Plus costs $80 per month plus $12 per person and adds multi-state payroll, next-day pay and time tracking, while Premium costs $180 per month plus $22 per person and adds named support, HR guidance, performance tools, custom reports and migration help. All three listed employee plans include unlimited payroll runs and federal, state and local tax filings and payments. Plans are month-to-month, with no long-term contract.

Gusto Payroll 2026: the short verdict

Gusto is a full-service payroll platform for employers paying W-2 employees and domestic contractors. Its core promise is that payroll calculations, payments and payroll-tax filings are handled inside one system rather than through separate tax software and manual payment processes. The listed employee plans all include unlimited payroll runs, payroll approvals, AutoPilot payroll, direct deposit or printable checks, employee and employer apps, multiple pay rates and schedules, and expense or reimbursement handling.

Choose Simple when every employee is covered by one state and you need the lowest published employee-plan price. Choose Plus when you operate in more than one state, need built-in time tracking, want contractor invoice management or value next-day pay as a plan feature. Choose Premium when payroll is part of a broader HR operation and you need a dedicated service advisor, certified HR support, performance and compensation tools, custom reporting, priority support or migration assistance.

2026 plan prices at a glance

Plan Monthly base Per-person fee Best fit Defining additions
Simple $49 $6 per person Single-state employers Unlimited payroll, tax filings and payments, basic PTO and holiday pay
Plus $80 $12 per person Multi-state or time-based payroll Multi-state payroll, next-day pay, time tracking, contractor invoice management
Premium $180 $22 per person Scaling organizations needing HR depth Dedicated service advisor, certified HR support, performance and compensation tools, custom reports, priority support, payroll migration and account setup

Gusto quotes these as monthly prices. The per-person amount is added to the base charge for each person on the account, so your payroll headcount directly changes the bill. The figures above are the published 2026 prices and do not include optional services, plan-dependent pay-speed charges, benefits costs or other third-party costs.

How to calculate the monthly bill

Use this formula before comparing plans:

Monthly subscription = plan base fee + (published per-person fee × number of people) + add-ons.

For example, a five-person account at the published rates would be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Simple: $49 + (5 × $6) = $79 per month before add-ons.
  • Plus: $80 + (5 × $12) = $140 per month before add-ons.
  • Premium: $180 + (5 × $22) = $290 per month before add-ons.

At ten people, the same arithmetic produces $109 for Simple, $200 for Plus and $400 for Premium. These are calculations from the listed monthly rates, not quoted invoices; your actual total can differ when you add pay-speed services, time-and-attendance features, benefits or other services.

To compare annual budgets, multiply the monthly result by 12 only after you have identified recurring add-ons. A five-person Simple subscription at $79 per month would be $948 over 12 months if the headcount and price stayed unchanged and no add-ons were used. A one-time payroll run charge, such as instant payroll, should not be treated as a recurring monthly fee.

Simple: the lowest-cost employee plan

What Simple includes

Simple is designed for employers whose payroll is confined to one state. The plan includes unlimited payroll runs, federal, state and local tax filings and payments, payroll approvals, AutoPilot payroll, direct deposit or printable checks, multiple pay rates and schedules, employee and employer apps, domestic contractor payments, and expenses or reimbursements. Basic paid-time-off and holiday-pay handling is also listed for Simple.

“Unlimited payroll runs” matters for employers that make corrections, run off-cycle payroll or maintain different schedules. The plan does not charge a separate fee for each routine run in the published description. You still need to enter accurate hours, rates, deductions and worker information, and you remain responsible for reviewing approvals and ensuring that the account is configured for the correct state and tax agencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Simple is the right choice

  • Your employees work and are registered in one state.
  • You need ordinary payroll tax filing and payment handling rather than an extensive HR suite.
  • You can use standard payroll timing or are willing to price an optional faster-pay service.
  • Your reporting, time capture and HR processes can be handled with the features included in the plan or with separate tools.

Where Simple may stop fitting

Simple is not the practical choice when you must run payroll across multiple states or require the Plus-level time-tracking and contractor-invoice features. Faster pay can also change the economics: Gusto displays next-day pay for Simple as a $15 monthly charge plus $3 per person, so compare that add-on with the Plus subscription rather than assuming the base price tells the whole story.

Plus: multi-state payroll and faster operational workflows

What Plus adds

Plus is listed at $80 per month plus $12 per person. Its headline additions are multi-state payroll, next-day pay, time tracking and contractor invoice management. Those features target employers whose payroll process involves more than simply entering a fixed salary or a single-state hourly run.

Multi-state capability is the key dividing line. If employees are employed, registered or otherwise subject to payroll obligations in more than one state, the single-state design of Simple is a poor fit. Confirm the states and registrations you need before selecting a plan; the published description establishes multi-state support for Plus but does not list every state or registration scenario.

Time tracking and contractor invoices

Time tracking can reduce the handoff between recorded hours and payroll, particularly for hourly employees with changing schedules. Contractor invoice management is useful when contractors submit invoices that need review and payment alongside employee payroll. Gusto also lists domestic contractor payments across the employee plans, while Plus specifically adds contractor invoice management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the Plus price can make sense

Compare the upgrade using the work you would otherwise perform manually. For five people, Plus is $61 per month above Simple at the published rates ($140 versus $79). That difference may be justified if multi-state payroll, integrated time capture or contractor-invoice workflows remove enough administrative work. If you only need next-day pay, compare Plus with Simple plus the displayed $15 monthly and $3-per-person next-day-pay add-on; the lower headline price does not automatically produce the lower total.

Premium: service, HR and reporting for a scaling organization

Premium features

Premium costs $180 per month plus $22 per person. It includes the employee-plan payroll capabilities and adds a dedicated service advisor, certified HR support, performance and compensation tools, custom reports, priority support, and payroll migration or account setup assistance.

The plan is aimed at organizations that need guidance and controls beyond payroll execution. A dedicated advisor can provide a named operational contact; certified HR support addresses policy and people-process questions; performance and compensation tools support structured reviews and pay decisions; and custom reports help adapt payroll data to management or finance requirements. Migration and account setup assistance matter most when moving from another payroll system or when payroll data is complex enough that an owner does not want to configure it alone.

Who should consider Premium

  • A growing company that wants payroll, HR guidance and compensation processes in one vendor relationship.
  • An employer that needs custom reporting rather than only standard payroll reports.
  • A team that values priority support and a named service advisor.
  • An organization migrating payroll and willing to pay for setup help instead of handling the conversion independently.

Check the premium-to-Plus jump

For five people, Premium is $150 per month above Plus at the listed rates ($290 versus $140). That premium should be evaluated against the value of advisor access, certified HR support, custom reporting, performance and compensation tooling, priority support and migration assistance. If you do not need those functions, Plus generally provides the more proportionate feature set.

Contractor payments and the Contractor Only plan

Gusto advertises domestic contractor payments across the listed employee plans. The pricing page also displays a “Contractor Only” price of $35 per month plus $6 per person. However, Gusto’s help center states that the Contractor Only plan closed on October 1, 2026. Because those two published references conflict in practical effect, treat contractor-only availability and pricing as a live-account verification item rather than a settled offer.

Before enrolling a contractor-only business, ask Gusto to confirm in writing whether a new account can be opened, which workers count as people for billing, what tax forms and filings are included, and whether the displayed $35 plus $6 rate applies to new customers or only existing accounts. Do not build a budget around the displayed price until the current account flow confirms it.

Payroll operations included across the employee plans

Tax filings and payments

Gusto lists federal, state and local payroll-tax filings and payments for the employee plans. That means the service is positioned as full-service payroll rather than a calculator that leaves every filing to the employer. You still need to provide accurate worker classifications, addresses, withholding information, pay rates and other setup data, and you should review payroll approvals and filing notices.

Ways to pay employees

Employees can be paid by direct deposit or with printable checks according to the published feature list. The choice affects your internal process: direct deposit reduces paper handling, while printable checks provide a manual fallback for workers or situations where electronic payment is not used.

Payroll timing and approvals

All listed employee plans include unlimited payroll runs and payroll approvals. AutoPilot payroll is also listed, allowing an employer to automate recurring payroll after configuration. Faster timing is plan-dependent: Plus lists next-day pay as an included addition, Simple displays next-day pay as an add-on, and Gusto also lists same-day pay and instant pay as options or plan-dependent services.

Gusto’s pricing page displays $100 per instant-payroll run. That is a per-run charge, not a monthly subscription. The same page displays next-day pay on Simple at $15 per month plus $3 per person. Time & Attendance Plus is displayed at $6 per person. The page lists same-day pay, global contractor payments and state tax registration among add-ons or plan-dependent options but does not provide a universal price for each in the supplied 2026 information.

Time, attendance, benefits and HR capabilities

Gusto markets more than payroll. Its broader categories include benefits, time and attendance, HR and talent, business compliance, money management and expert support. An independent 2026 review likewise describes the product as combining full-service payroll with time tracking, health and financial benefits, onboarding and compliance assistance.

Availability and pricing can depend on the plan or the service selected. For time capture, distinguish the Plus plan’s listed time tracking from the separately displayed Time & Attendance Plus charge of $6 per person. Confirm whether the workflow you need is included in your plan or requires that add-on.

How payroll speed changes the total cost

“Faster pay” can mean different things operationally, so identify the exact requirement before choosing a plan:

  • Standard payroll: the ordinary processing schedule available under the selected plan.
  • Next-day pay: listed as a Plus feature; Gusto displays it on Simple at $15 per month plus $3 per person.
  • Same-day pay: listed as a plan-dependent or add-on option, with no universal price stated in the supplied information.
  • Instant payroll: Gusto displays a $100 charge per instant-payroll run.

For a five-person Simple account using the displayed next-day add-on, the arithmetic is $49 base + $30 per-person fees + $15 add-on + $15 per-person next-day fees, or $109 per month before any other services. That equals the five-person Plus subscription of $140 only for this particular headcount and add-on combination; the feature sets remain different. A larger workforce changes the comparison because the $3 next-day fee scales per person.

Month-to-month terms, cancellation and switching

Gusto states that its plans are month-to-month, with no long-term contract. The company’s pricing page says, “No hidden fees. Cancel any time,” and its help center says, “Gusto is month-to-month, so there’s no long-term contract and you can cancel anytime.” Customers can switch or cancel according to the published terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Month-to-month billing lowers commitment risk, but it does not remove implementation work. Before switching or cancelling, export payroll reports and worker records you need for accounting, confirm tax-filing responsibilities for the final period, and check whether benefits or other services have separate termination steps. Premium’s migration and account-setup assistance is relevant when moving into Gusto; it does not eliminate the need to plan a move out.

Which Gusto plan should you choose?

Choose Simple if

  • All payroll activity is in one state.
  • You need the lowest listed employee-plan base and per-person rates.
  • Unlimited payroll, tax filings, direct deposit or checks, basic PTO and holiday pay cover your workflow.
  • You do not need Plus-level time tracking, multi-state payroll or contractor invoice management.

Choose Plus if

  • You employ people in multiple states.
  • You want next-day pay as part of the plan rather than pricing it separately on Simple.
  • You need time tracking or contractor invoice management.
  • You have enough hourly, scheduled or contractor work that integrated workflows can replace manual handoffs.

Choose Premium if

  • You need a dedicated service advisor and certified HR support.
  • Performance, compensation and custom-reporting tools are important operating requirements.
  • You want priority support or payroll migration and account-setup assistance.
  • The organization is scaling enough that HR process and reporting needs justify the higher fixed and per-person charges.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Count the workforce used for billing. Separate employees and contractors in your forecast, then confirm with Gusto how each category is counted for the selected plan.
  2. Map every work state. List where employees work and where the business must file payroll taxes. A single-state requirement points toward Simple; multi-state activity points toward Plus or Premium.
  3. Record pay schedules and rates. Note weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or other schedules, multiple pay rates, overtime practices and any planned off-cycle runs.
  4. Choose payment methods. Decide which workers use direct deposit and where printable checks are needed.
  5. Price speed separately. Identify whether standard, next-day, same-day or instant payroll is required, then add the relevant recurring or per-run fee to the comparison.
  6. Decide whether time must flow into payroll. If employees track hours, compare Plus’s listed time tracking with the separately displayed Time & Attendance Plus option.
  7. Assess HR support. If you need policy guidance, compensation workflows, custom reports, migration help or a named advisor, evaluate Premium rather than comparing only payroll prices.
  8. Verify volatile details. Recheck current prices, add-on rates, state registration availability and Contractor Only status in the live Gusto account flow before signing up.

Implementation and review points

Before the first payroll

Gather legal business details, tax-account information, employee addresses, withholding elections, pay rates, schedules, bank details and contractor records. Decide who can approve payroll and who should receive employer or employee app access. If you operate in multiple states, verify registrations and filing responsibilities before the first run rather than assuming plan selection completes every government requirement.

During each payroll cycle

Review hours, rates, reimbursements, deductions and worker status before approval. Confirm that the pay date matches the selected processing speed, especially when using next-day, same-day or instant options. Retain payroll reports and filing confirmations for your accounting and compliance records.

When changing plans

Document which feature triggered the upgrade or downgrade, recalculate the base and per-person charges, and confirm how add-ons carry over. A move from Simple to Plus can change both the subscription price and the available payroll workflow; a move to Premium adds service and HR capabilities that may require new users, permissions or implementation steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths supported by the published feature set

  • Unlimited payroll runs across the listed employee plans.
  • Federal, state and local tax filing and payment handling.
  • Direct deposit and printable-check options.
  • Payroll approvals, AutoPilot, apps, multiple pay rates and schedules.
  • A clear progression from single-state payroll to multi-state operations and then to HR and reporting support.
  • Month-to-month terms without a long-term contract.

Trade-offs to budget for

  • The per-person fee can become a substantial part of the monthly bill as headcount grows.
  • Multi-state payroll, time tracking and next-day pay are not all included in Simple.
  • Some faster-pay and workforce-management capabilities are add-ons or plan-dependent.
  • Premium’s higher fixed and per-person charges are justified only when its advisor, HR, reporting, performance or migration features are needed.
  • Contractor-only pricing is not reliable for a new account until Gusto confirms current availability.

Bottom line: match the plan to operational complexity

Gusto’s 2026 pricing is easiest to understand as a three-level decision. Simple covers core single-state payroll at $49 plus $6 per person. Plus costs $80 plus $12 per person and is the operational step-up for multi-state payroll, next-day pay, time tracking and contractor invoices. Premium costs $180 plus $22 per person and is aimed at organizations that need named service, HR expertise, performance and compensation management, custom reports, priority support or migration help.

Run the arithmetic with your actual headcount, add every pay-speed or attendance charge, and verify the current Contractor Only position before enrolling. Because all listed employee plans include payroll runs and tax filings, the deciding factor is not whether Gusto can process payroll; it is how many states, workers, pay-speed requirements and HR processes your organization needs the plan to support.
