Python’s core developers later chose an elected five-person Steering Council to guide the project. The current council, as listed in PEP 13 for 2026, is Barry Warsaw, Donghee Na, Pablo Galindo Salgado, Savannah Ostrowski, and Thomas Wouters.
What happened when Guido van Rossum stepped down?
Following debate over PEP 572, a proposal about assignment expressions, van Rossum told Python’s committers mailing list that he wanted to leave the decision-making role he had held as BDFL. He wrote, “I would like to remove myself entirely from the decision process,” and said, “I am not going to appoint a successor.” His announcement, dated July 12, 2018, called the departure a “permanent vacation.” Read van Rossum’s original message.
That was a resignation from Python’s leadership arrangement, not an announcement that he was leaving Python altogether. At the time, he said he would remain for a while as an ordinary core developer and might be more available to mentor. Those were his intentions in 2018; they do not establish his exact present-day activity.
Who replaced Guido as Python’s leader?
No one replaced van Rossum as a new BDFL. Instead, Python’s core developers considered different ways to govern the project. PEP 8001 set out a process for reviewing and ranking governance proposals, including a December 2018 voting period. The Steering Council proposal in PEP 8016 was selected and became the basis for Python’s official governance document, PEP 13. PEP 8015 was among the alternatives, but it was not adopted. PEP 8001, PEP 13, and PEP 8015 document the process and proposals.

How Python is governed now
PEP 13, the official Python governance reference, defines the Steering Council as a five-person committee. It gives the council broad authority over Python and CPython, including accepting or rejecting Python Enhancement Proposals (PEPs), setting PEP decision processes, managing project assets with the Python Software Foundation, and delegating authority.
The council’s mandate is not to make every project decision by itself. PEP 13 calls for seeking consensus before formal action and describes the council as a “court of final appeal” when other methods fail. It also says the council should look for ways to use its powers as little as possible. Core team members remain trusted volunteers who manage Python, shape decisions, and participate in formal votes, including council elections.

Who is on the 2026 Steering Council?
PEP 13 lists these members for 2026:
- Barry Warsaw
- Donghee Na
- Pablo Galindo Salgado
- Savannah Ostrowski
- Thomas Wouters
Membership changes by term. PEP 13 is the canonical reference for the council’s current membership, selection process, and role; the Python Steering Council communications repository also points readers to it.
How council members are chosen
Core team members elect the council. PEP 13 describes anonymous elections using STAR voting modified for multiple winners. The system replaces a single individual’s final authority with a committee selected through the project’s documented voting process.

What the change means—and what it does not
The transition moved Python from founder-centered final decision-making to formal, elected governance. A council can bring several perspectives to decisions and distribute responsibility, while its defined role as a final appeal body leaves room for consensus and other project processes to work first. The trade-off is that a committee must coordinate rather than rely on one leader to make the final call.
The governance change establishes who has authority and how the project can make decisions; it does not, by itself, predict Python’s technical direction or settle every decision across Python implementations and the wider ecosystem. PEP 13 describes the council’s powers alongside the roles of the core team and its ability to delegate.

Is Guido van Rossum still involved with Python?
His July 2018 message said he expected to remain for a time as an ordinary core developer and could be more available to mentor, while removing himself from the decision process. That historical statement should not be treated as confirmation of his precise role or day-to-day involvement now. For his current activity, consult recent official Python project records rather than infer it from the resignation announcement.
