GTA VI looks more ambitious; GTA V is the proven game today. Rockstar’s next Grand Theft Auto is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but it has not been independently reviewed or tested as a finished release. Its announced setting, characters and PS5 technology suggest a broader technical target than GTA V. However, no official map-area measurement, activity count or independent assessment proves that GTA VI is larger or more interactive yet.
That makes the practical decision straightforward: play or buy GTA V if you want a known open world now; consider GTA VI when it launches if Leonida, Vice City and the new hardware features match what you value and you accept the normal uncertainty of a pre-release purchase.
Release status changes the comparison
GTA V is an available, established game. Rockstar still maintains its official GTA V product page, and a Take-Two Interactive/Rockstar Games release reported more than 190 million GTA V units sold in 2023. Its map, missions, driving model, side activities and current-console versions can be evaluated from real play.

GTA VI is a future product at the time of writing. Rockstar and Take-Two list November 19, 2026 as the launch date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There are no final review scores, independent performance tests, verified activity totals or post-launch online details to compare with GTA V. Any statement that GTA VI is definitively “better,” twice as large or more interactive should therefore be treated as an expectation, not a measured result.

World breadth: Leonida versus Los Santos and Blaine County
What GTA VI officially promises
Rockstar identifies “Vice City, USA” as part of GTA VI’s setting and says Jason and Lucia become involved in “a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.” The wording matters. It describes a fictional state, not simply a rebuilt city, so the announced scope includes more than an urban Vice City district.
That framing creates a reasonable expectation of greater regional variety: a city may sit alongside smaller communities, highways, coastlines and other parts of Leonida. It does not establish how much land the player can enter, how densely each region is populated, or whether every area has unique missions and systems. No official source currently provides a square-mile measurement that can be compared fairly with GTA V.
What GTA V gives you now
GTA V’s released map combines Los Santos with Blaine County. Players can move between a dense metropolitan area, suburbs, desert, mountains, forests and coastline using cars, motorcycles, aircraft, boats and on-foot routes. Because the game is released, you can judge travel times, visual variety, road layouts and the amount of usable space directly rather than relying on promotional wording.

Does GTA VI have the bigger map?
Not as a verified fact. Leonida is described qualitatively as an expansive state beyond Vice City, but Rockstar has not published a comparable area number. Avoid claims that GTA VI is “twice as large” or any other specific multiple unless a later official source supplies the measurement and explains what is included. A larger outline would not automatically mean a better world: density, meaningful destinations, mission variety and how quickly players can move between regions matter just as much.
Environmental immersion and traversal
Why GTA V remains a useful baseline
GTA V’s traversal is familiar and measurable. Different vehicles suit different terrain, aircraft open long-distance routes, boats make the coastline functional and the character-switch system lets missions move quickly between locations. Its environmental reactions, traffic and pedestrian routines are visible in ordinary play, even though they are bounded by the systems of a game released on older hardware.

What is known about GTA VI
The announced Leonida setting implies that travel between distinct regions will be important to the story. The promotional material establishes the setting and central conspiracy, but it does not provide a final list of vehicles, transport systems, wildlife behaviors, weather effects, interior access or physical-simulation improvements. Those details need independent gameplay testing after launch.
For that reason, GTA VI cannot yet be awarded a win for immersion or traversal. Its newer console targets may enable more detail and shorter waits, but hardware capability is not proof that every environment will be denser or every journey more entertaining.

What can be judged in GTA V
GTA V offers a known set of systems: story missions, character-specific activities, side encounters, races, property and business elements in its released modes, and a long-running online component. The exact mix differs by edition and mode, but the important point is that players can experience the density and repetition themselves. You can decide whether Los Santos feels alive enough for free-roam play, whether side content rewards detours and whether mission design uses the world effectively.
Why GTA VI’s interactivity is still unresolved
No official source currently gives a final GTA VI activity count, a verified NPC-behavior assessment or a complete description of its post-launch online features. Trailers and setting descriptions can establish tone and geography, not how often systems collide during unscripted play.
Until reviewers and players test the released game, questions such as these remain open:

- How many interiors, businesses and enterable public spaces are available?
- How do police response, crowds, traffic, wildlife and weather interact outside missions?
- How much side content exists in each Leonida region, and does it remain varied after the story?
- Can players create their own routines, or do most activities funnel back into scripted missions?
- What online modes and progression systems will be available at launch?
On this axis, GTA V is the safer recommendation because its activity density is documented by years of play. GTA VI may surpass it, but that is a post-release question.

GTA V’s three-protagonist model
GTA V follows Michael, Franklin and Trevor, allowing the player to switch among three contrasting lives. Missions often use that structure to stage simultaneous operations, change viewpoints and vary the tone of free roam. It is a distinctive design choice and one of the reasons GTA V remains a useful comparison point.
GTA VI’s Jason-and-Lucia focus
Rockstar places Jason and Lucia at the center of GTA VI. Its official description says they have always known “the deck is stacked against them” and become caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. A two-person focus could support a tighter partnership narrative and a more concentrated relationship arc than GTA V’s three-way structure.
That is a difference in design, not proof that one story is better. Story quality depends on writing, mission pacing, character development and how naturally the protagonists use the world. Those qualities cannot be scored responsibly before the full campaign is released.

These are Sony’s platform statements. They explain the intended PS5 integration, but they are not independent measurements of frame rate, image quality, loading duration or stability. Final performance still depends on the released build and any patches.
How this differs from GTA V
GTA V was designed around earlier console generations and later adapted for newer systems. Its current versions can look and run well, but they were not built around the PS5’s DualSense features or SSD-first streaming design in the way Sony describes for GTA VI. If tactile feedback, 3D audio and minimal loading matter to you, GTA VI has the clearer announced advantage on PS5.
Price, editions and physical purchase details
Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 release lists two GTA VI editions and the launch platforms:

The listed prices are the announced US prices and may differ by region, taxes, retailer and later changes. Take-Two says the game will be sold through the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store and global retailers.
What comes in the physical package
Rockstar’s physical-package information says the GTA VI package contains a digital download code and no game disc. Retailers are expected to begin shipping physical packages from November 12 so buyers can preload ahead of the November 19 launch. Check your region, retailer, price, code redemption rules and platform before ordering; a boxed package is not the same as a disc that can be installed offline.

What is still unknown about value
The available information does not establish the final contents of the Ultimate Edition, the price of future downloadable content, or the launch and long-term structure of GTA VI online. Do not pay a premium based on unconfirmed feature lists. Compare the editions again when Rockstar publishes the complete inclusions for your region.
Which game should you choose?
Choose GTA V now if you want a proven open world
- You want to play immediately rather than wait until November 19, 2026.
- You prefer known mission design, vehicles, activities and online availability.
- You want to judge the map’s density and traversal through actual gameplay.
- You are buying for a system other than PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S and no GTA VI version has been announced for it.
GTA V is not merely a placeholder. Its released world has had time to be evaluated, updated and supported, and its more than 190 million reported sales show the scale of its established audience.
Wait for GTA VI if the new setting and hardware features are the priority
- You want the newly announced Leonida setting and Vice City rather than another visit to Los Santos.
- You are interested in Jason and Lucia’s two-person story structure.
- You own a PS5 and value the announced DualSense, Tempest 3D AudioTech and SSD integrations.
- You are comfortable waiting for independent reviews to answer questions about map density, activities and performance.
Should you preorder the PS5 edition?
Preordering is a preference decision, not a requirement for access. The physical package is planned to support preloading, but it contains a download code rather than a disc. If you preorder, confirm that the retailer supplies the correct regional code, that your console has enough storage and that the edition’s contents justify the price. If you want independent performance information, wait for reviews after launch instead.
Questions that cannot be answered yet
A fair GTA VI versus GTA V comparison must leave several points open until the new game is released and tested:
- No official GTA VI map-area number has been published alongside a directly comparable GTA V measurement.
- No final GTA VI activity count or independent NPC-behavior assessment is available.
- No review score or real-world performance result exists for the finished game at the current date.
- No confirmed post-launch GTA VI online feature set is available.
- No PC version has been promised in the stated platform information.
These are not small details. They determine whether a large-looking map stays engaging, whether free roam remains varied after the campaign and whether the game performs consistently on launch hardware. They should be updated after November 19, 2026 rather than filled with rumors or leaked claims.
Verdict
On documented ambition, GTA VI has the stronger case: Leonida is presented as a state-wide setting that includes Vice City, Jason and Lucia anchor a new story, and Sony lists PS5-specific immersion and near-instant-loading technology. On proven open-world quality, GTA V wins by default because it is the released game with a playable map, established systems and a long record of real-world use.
So, is GTA 6 really better than GTA 5? Not conclusively yet. GTA VI looks more ambitious; GTA V is the proven game today. Revisit the comparison after launch, when map size, interactivity, performance and online content can be judged rather than inferred.
