Short answer: Official ratings do not prove that GTA 6 is categorically more violent or more sexual than GTA 5. In the United States, both are rated ESRB Mature 17+ with the same content descriptors. In Australia, both are R 18+; GTA 6’s advice explicitly says “high impact violence, sex scenes and drug use,” while the cited GTA 5 record says “high impact themes, drug use, violence and sex, online interactivity.” GTA 6 is still unreleased as of October 19, 2026, so a final scene-by-scene comparison is not yet possible.
At a glance: what the official classifications actually show
The most defensible comparison comes from rating-board records, not trailers, rumors or assumptions about what a Grand Theft Auto sequel might contain. The table below separates the age category from the descriptive wording that explains why each board considers the game adult-only.

These records establish that both games are intended for adults and contain substantial violence, sexual material, nudity, language, humor and drug or alcohol content. They do not provide a numerical scale for graphicness, a count of scenes or a reliable percentage comparison between the two games.

There is no official evidence that supports a universal “yes.” The US ESRB listing gives both games the same two violence-related descriptors: Intense Violence and Blood and Gore. Those labels put both games firmly in the category of strongly violent adult entertainment, but they do not rank one title above the other.

Why the Australian wording can look different
Australia’s classification for GTA 6 uses the phrase high impact violence. The cited GTA 5 record places “violence” inside the broader advice string “high impact themes, drug use, violence and sex, online interactivity.” The wording is worth reporting because it is an official difference in phrasing, yet it is not a controlled measurement. Classification agencies use their own conventions, submissions can differ by version, and a compact consumer-advice line is not a shot-by-shot severity score.
What you can safely infer
- Both games include violence intense enough to trigger the highest-level violence descriptors used in their respective records.
- Both include blood and gore according to the US listings.
- GTA 6’s Australian advice confirms high-impact violence, but it does not establish that the sequel has more violent content than GTA 5 overall.
- The available records do not establish the presence, frequency or treatment of particular scenes such as executions, torture, dismemberment or other highly specific events in GTA 6.
Until the released game has a complete, independently documented content audit, claims that GTA 6 is definitively gorier, more sadistic or more graphic than GTA 5 go beyond the evidence.
Sexual content and nudity: what is confirmed
Both US ESRB records include Nudity and Strong Sexual Content. That is enough to answer the practical question of whether either title contains adult sexual material: yes, both do. It is not enough to calculate which game has more scenes, longer scenes or more explicit imagery.

The official GTA 5 ESRB summary provides details that are not present in the cited GTA 6 result. It describes implied fellatio and masturbation, several sex acts involving a prostitute, close-up presentation in some sequences and sexual moaning. The same summary states that the prostitute sequences do not depict nudity, while other portions of GTA 5 do contain nudity.
Those details describe the published GTA 5 summary; they should not be treated as a template for scenes that may or may not appear in GTA 6.

What the GTA 6 record confirms—and leaves open
The GTA 6 ESRB result confirms strong sexual content and nudity. Australia’s August 27, 2026 consumer advice goes further in wording by explicitly naming sex scenes. That confirms that sexual scenes are part of the classified material, but the record does not give a comparable scene-by-scene inventory or duration estimate.
The accurate comparison is therefore limited: GTA 6 is officially confirmed to contain nudity and strong sexual content, and its Australian advice specifically mentions sex scenes; the available official documents do not establish whether the amount is greater than, equal to or less than GTA 5.

Drugs, alcohol, strong language and mature humor
The US descriptors for both games include Mature Humor, Strong Language and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. These are independent reasons a game may be unsuitable for children, even when a particular scene is not violent or sexual.
Drug-related material
Australia’s GTA 6 advice identifies high-impact drug use. The cited GTA 5 record lists drug use, and the GTA 5 ESRB summary gives concrete examples: smoking marijuana, peyote-related hallucination sequences and cocaine use. Those examples show the range of material documented for GTA 5. They do not establish that GTA 6 includes the same substances, the same effects or a larger amount.
Language and humor
Because both US listings carry Strong Language and Mature Humor, players should expect frequent profanity and jokes aimed at adults in each game. The rating descriptor does not provide a word count, a list of terms or a comparison of which script is harsher. A claim that one game has more profanity would require a complete, comparable script analysis that is not supplied by the ratings.

Likewise, the presence of Mature Humor means the tone itself can be unsuitable for younger players. It does not mean every joke is sexual or violent; it signals that adult themes and humor contribute to the overall rating.

United States: no difference in the headline category
In the United States, both titles are rated M for Mature 17+ by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. The number is an age guidance category, not a guarantee that a 17-year-old will find the content suitable. The descriptors underneath the rating explain the types of material that contributed to the classification.
Australia: both are R 18+
In Australia, the cited records put both titles in the R 18+ category. GTA 6 was classified on August 27, 2026. The GTA 5 entry cited for comparison is a modified record and includes online interactivity in its advice. The headline category is the same; the wording beneath it differs.
Do not convert ratings mechanically between countries
M 17+, PEGI 18 and R 18+ are products of different classification systems. They broadly communicate that a game is intended for adults, but their criteria, legal force and descriptor terminology are not identical. A US M rating is not literally the same label as an Australian R 18+ classification, and neither should be read as a precise universal threshold for every 17-year-old.
What a content descriptor can—and cannot—tell you
A rating descriptor is a warning category, not a complete walkthrough. The ESRB explains its system as a combination of an age-based rating and content descriptors. A descriptor tells you the kind of material that contributed to the decision, while the short rating summary supplies selected examples when the board has published them.

Useful questions that descriptors answer
- Is violence a major reason for the adult classification?
- Should you expect blood or gore?
- Are nudity and strong sexual content present?
- Are strong language, mature humor and drug or alcohol references part of the game?
Questions they do not answer by themselves
- How many missions contain a particular type of content?
- How long a sexual or violent scene lasts?
- Whether content can be skipped, muted or disabled in settings.
- Whether the sequel is more explicit than the previous game overall.
- How an individual player will react to the material.
This distinction matters especially for GTA 6 because the game has not shipped at the time of the available classification information. A rating board can classify submitted material before launch, but the public record still may not describe every scene or gameplay context.
Release timing changes how confidently you can compare them
Rockstar’s official store lists GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 release date. The authoritative classification information available on October 19, 2026 therefore describes a pre-release game. There is no finished-game review or completed content audit represented in the cited evidence.
Keep three kinds of information separate:
- Official classification information. This is the strongest evidence for the categories of adult content confirmed by the boards.
- Promotional footage and publisher descriptions. These may show tone or selected scenes, but they are curated and cannot establish the full content of the game.
- Firsthand playthroughs and post-release documentation. These are needed for a comprehensive comparison of frequency, context, optional content and scene presentation.
Until the third category exists for GTA 6, a careful article should describe confirmed categories and clearly mark unknowns rather than predict unreleased scenes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is GTA 6 appropriate for a 17-year-old?
For a US reader, the M 17+ label means the ESRB places the game in an adult category, and the listed descriptors are unusually broad: intense violence, blood and gore, nudity, strong sexual content, strong language, mature humor and drug or alcohol use. A 17-year-old’s maturity, family rules and sensitivity to those subjects still matter, but the rating should not be interpreted as a recommendation for every teenager.
For an Australian reader, R 18+ communicates an even clearer adult-only boundary in that classification system. The consumer advice specifically calls out high-impact violence, sex scenes and drug use for GTA 6. Parents and guardians should use the local classification, not substitute a US label.

A practical decision checklist
- Check the rating system used in your country and read every descriptor, not only the age number.
- Consider whether the player is sensitive to graphic violence, sexual situations, nudity, profanity, drug use or disturbing humor.
- Remember that open-world games can let players encounter mature material outside the main story path.
- Discuss whether the player understands the difference between fictional criminal behavior and acceptable real-world conduct.
- For a pre-release title, revisit the official classification and content information after launch, when the final build is available.
How to answer the common comparison questions
“Is GTA 6 more violent than GTA 5?”
Not proven. Both US listings say Intense Violence and Blood and Gore. Australia uses “high impact violence” for GTA 6 and a broader advice string containing “violence” for GTA 5, but that wording difference is not a measured ranking.
“Does GTA 6 have more sex scenes than GTA 5?”
Not established. GTA 6 is confirmed to have nudity and strong sexual content, and Australia mentions sex scenes. GTA 5 has the same US descriptors and a more detailed published summary, but the available records do not count or compare scenes.
“Is GTA 6 rated M like GTA 5?”
Yes in the United States: both are M for Mature 17+. In Australia, both cited records are R 18+.
“Does GTA 6 include nudity, drugs and strong language?”
Yes, those categories are reflected in the official records: nudity, strong language and drug or alcohol use appear in the US descriptors, while Australia’s GTA 6 advice names high-impact drug use.
What would justify a stronger post-release comparison?
A genuinely stronger GTA 6-versus-GTA 5 analysis would need the final GTA 6 build and a transparent method. Useful evidence would include a catalog of main-story and optional scenes, notes on whether content is interactive or cinematic, distinctions between visible nudity and implied sexual activity, and a record of regional edits or version differences. Without those controls, statements such as “twice as violent” or “more explicit” sound precise but are unsupported.
The current official record is still valuable: it tells families, retailers and players that GTA 6 belongs in the same broad adult-content conversation as GTA 5. It also prevents a common mistake—assuming that a new title must automatically be more extreme simply because it is newer.
Bottom line for buyers and families
GTA 6 and GTA 5 share the same US M 17+ category and the same headline ESRB descriptors for violence, gore, nudity, sexual content, language, humor and drugs or alcohol. Both are R 18+ in the cited Australian classifications. GTA 6’s Australian wording is more explicit about “sex scenes,” but the official evidence available before its November 19, 2026 release does not prove that it contains more violence or sexual material than GTA 5. Treat both as adult-only games, use the descriptors relevant to your country, and wait for post-release documentation before making a scene-by-scene claim about the sequel.
