GTA 6 is a structural change rather than a simple expansion of GTA 5. GTA V is set in Los Santos and Blaine County and follows three switchable protagonists. GTA VI moves to the state of Leonida, with modern Vice City as its anchor, and follows Jason and Lucia, a criminal couple. GTA V’s online mode is fully documented and mature; Rockstar has not yet published an equivalent feature list or player count for GTA VI Online.
Rockstar lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The physical edition contains a download code, so buyers should check whether a retailer is selling a boxed code or a separate digital purchase.

The most important qualification is the map comparison. GTA V is explicitly described as a city-and-county open world. GTA VI is described at the state level, but Rockstar has not published an official square-mile measurement. A state-level setting does not, by itself, prove a specific percentage increase over GTA V.
Map and setting: Los Santos and Blaine County versus Leonida
What GTA V contains
GTA V opens its world around Los Santos and Blaine County. Los Santos is the dense urban center, while Blaine County supplies smaller communities, desert and rural roads. Rockstar’s preview presents the world as available from the beginning and spanning city streets, countryside, mountains and ocean.

The setting is fictional but modeled on Los Angeles and the surrounding California geography. That gives GTA V a clear contrast between metropolitan missions, long highway drives, wilderness routes and coastal water. The city-and-county design also lets the campaign move quickly between distinct environments without leaving the same regional setting.
What GTA VI establishes about Leonida
Rockstar’s official GTA VI site identifies the location as “Only in Leonida Vice City, USA.” Take-Two describes Leonida as a state containing the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and areas beyond the city. The confirmed comparison is therefore Los Santos plus Blaine County in GTA V versus a broader Leonida state setting in GTA VI.
Vice City is the urban anchor, but the official material does not provide a complete, measured list of every town, island, county or wilderness region. Promotional images and trailers can show locations, roads or activities, yet they should not be converted into a definitive map inventory unless Rockstar names them in its published materials.
Is the GTA VI map bigger?
It is reasonable to expect a different geographic scope because Leonida is presented as a state, while GTA V is presented as one city and its county. It is not accurate to attach an exact size, percentage or square-mile figure: Rockstar has not published one in the cited official material.
Fan-made measurements, leaked map reconstructions and unofficial region labels are not substitutes for a Rockstar statistic. Treat them as speculation rather than confirmed specifications. The useful confirmed difference is the type of setting: GTA V emphasizes a self-contained metropolitan region, while GTA VI frames Vice City as part of a wider state.
How the setting changes traversal
GTA V’s geography supports several established travel patterns: urban traffic in Los Santos, highways linking the city to Blaine County, mountain roads, rural shortcuts and coastal or offshore movement. Those contrasts affect mission planning and free-roam pacing.
GTA VI’s Leonida should be read as an opportunity for comparable variety around Vice City, not as a promise of a particular transport system. Rockstar’s published synopsis and store information establish the setting and story premise, but they do not provide a complete technical specification for driving physics, flight, boating, fast travel or other traversal systems. Details seen in trailers remain observations until Rockstar documents them directly.

Story and playable characters
GTA V’s three-protagonist structure
GTA V’s campaign uses three playable protagonists: Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Rockstar describes them as people with different lives, goals and skill sets who can be switched during the story.
That design changes how missions are staged. A single operation can involve several viewpoints, and switching characters can alter the immediate position, abilities or tactical role available to the player. Michael, Franklin and Trevor are not simply cosmetic character choices; the campaign is built around their intersecting relationships and contrasting approaches to crime.
GTA VI’s Jason-and-Lucia partnership
GTA VI’s official store synopsis centers on Jason and Lucia. They are presented as partners whose easy score goes wrong, pulling them into a conspiracy that spans Leonida.
This is a different narrative shape from GTA V’s trio. GTA VI is presented as a two-lead crime partnership, with the relationship between Jason and Lucia providing the campaign’s central axis. The official synopsis does not publish a full mission count, character-switching rule, skill tree, weapon progression system or detailed role split between the two protagonists.

The safe conclusion is structural, not speculative: GTA V is an ensemble story designed around three switchable leads; GTA VI is introduced as a two-person partnership moving through a state-wide conspiracy.
Gameplay, missions and combat: what is confirmed
GTA V’s documented campaign foundation
GTA V combines open-world exploration with scripted missions, optional activities and character-specific abilities. Its three protagonists allow missions to shift between different skill sets and perspectives. The world supports driving, shooting, flying, boating and exploration across urban, rural, mountainous and coastal areas.
Those are established characteristics of GTA V’s released game. They should not be used to infer that GTA VI will copy every system unchanged or replace each one with a named new mechanic.

What Rockstar has and has not specified for GTA VI
Rockstar’s official GTA VI material confirms Jason and Lucia, their criminal partnership, the failed score and the Leonida setting. It does not provide a complete written specification for combat handling, cover behavior, stealth rules, driving physics, police systems, mission branching, property ownership, character progression or inventory limits.
Trailers may show animations, vehicle behavior, weapons or environmental interactions. Those clips can indicate the direction of the game, but a trailer observation is not the same as a published system requirement or a promise that every shown interaction appears in the final release.
How to compare gameplay without overclaiming
- Use GTA V’s released mechanics when explaining what players can play today.
- Use Rockstar’s synopsis and platform listing when describing GTA VI’s confirmed premise and availability.
- Label trailer-only observations as visual evidence rather than documented features.
- Do not assign GTA VI a mission count, player progression model, combat feature or economy until Rockstar publishes those details.
Online modes: a mature GTA V service versus an unannounced GTA VI specification
What GTA Online launched with
Rockstar’s 2013 launch description called GTA Online “a dynamic and persistent online world for 16 players.” It shared GTA V’s geography and mechanics and supported solo or cooperative exploration, missions, activities and competitive modes.
The documented online loop included character customization, vehicle ownership, properties, reputation and cash progression. Players could build a persistent character and return to an evolving world rather than treating each session as a disconnected match.
How GTA Online expanded
Rockstar later added substantial cooperative and competitive structure. The Heists release introduced four-player, multi-part missions in which participants could take roles involving hacking, stealth infiltration, precision driving, aerial combat, sniping and skydiving.
Adversary modes added competitive scenarios, while daily objectives gave players recurring tasks in free roam and other activities. These additions are part of GTA Online’s documented history and explain why the service is much broader than its original launch description.
Player counts and technical upgrades
The original launch statement specified 16 players. Later-generation GTA V versions supported up to 30 players and added technical features such as output up to 4K, frame rates up to 60 frames per second, HDR and ray tracing on supported consoles. These figures describe the relevant later-generation versions, not every release of GTA V.

What is known about GTA VI Online
Rockstar has not published a definitive GTA VI Online feature list in the official material used for this comparison. There is no confirmed GTA VI player count, launch economy, subscription requirement, property system, heist structure or progression model to report as fact.
That absence matters when deciding whether GTA VI is a replacement for GTA Online. GTA Online has known systems and years of content. GTA VI’s online offering may eventually be substantial, but its launch format and technical limits remain unconfirmed until Rockstar provides an official specification.

Platforms, release date and physical editions
Confirmed GTA VI platforms
Rockstar Support identifies PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S editions. No PC edition is confirmed in the cited platform information, so a PC release should not be presented as announced.
Rockstar’s store lists November 19, 2026 as the release date. Because that date is future-dated relative to the current publication context, availability, regional launch timing and retailer stock can still vary.
What comes in the physical package
Rockstar Support says the physical version contains a download code for the game. A box on a store shelf therefore does not necessarily mean a disc is included. Before buying, check the retailer’s description for the platform, region, edition and whether the item is a boxed download code or a direct digital purchase.
GTA V’s generation history
GTA V was released in 2013 and later received versions for newer console generations. The current-generation editions added features including up to 4K output, up to 60 frames per second, HDR and ray tracing on supported hardware. Those enhancements belong to the later versions and should not be assumed on every platform that has hosted GTA V.
Should you buy GTA 6 if you already play GTA Online?
Buy GTA VI for a new single-player setting
GTA VI is the stronger reason to buy if your main interest is a new campaign, a new fictional region and a different protagonist structure. You would be moving from Los Santos and Blaine County to Leonida and from three switchable leads to Jason and Lucia’s partnership.

Keep GTA Online for established multiplayer depth
If your priority is immediate multiplayer variety, GTA Online already has documented systems: persistent characters, missions, races and activities, properties, progression, adversary modes and four-player heists. Its long-running content base is a known quantity.
Wait for an official GTA VI Online specification if multiplayer is decisive
Do not buy GTA VI on the assumption that its online mode will launch with a particular player count, economy, heist format or subscription model. Rockstar has not confirmed those details in the cited material. A multiplayer-first buyer should wait for the official feature list and platform requirements before treating GTA VI as a direct replacement for GTA Online.
Common misconceptions and how to avoid them
“Leonida is exactly a certain number of square miles”
No official square-mile figure is provided in the cited Rockstar or Take-Two material. Exact map-size claims circulating online may come from fan measurements or leaks and should not be reported as confirmed.

“Every trailer mechanic is confirmed gameplay”
Trailers can reveal the game’s tone and show possible interactions, but they are not a complete mechanics manual. Separate what Rockstar explicitly documents from what appears only in footage.
“The physical copy must contain a disc”
For GTA VI, Rockstar Support says the physical package contains a download code. Verify the box contents before purchase, particularly if you have limited internet access or need a disc-based license.
