If you’re buying a console mainly for GTA VI and don’t already have a library tied to either platform, the standard PS5 is the practical default: Rockstar’s official page says the game “Plays Best On PlayStation 5,” and a September 2026 UK price comparison reported a lower price for the standard PS5 than for the Xbox Series X disc model. That wording is not a performance test, however. If you own Xbox games or regularly use Game Pass, staying with Xbox may make more sense. Compare current local prices before you buy.
What platforms will GTA VI be on, and when does it launch?
Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation and Xbox list a November 19, 2026 release date for their respective consoles. PlayStation also lists PS5 Pro as supported. The official listings reviewed do not establish a PC release date.
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page uses the phrase “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” This is Rockstar’s platform positioning, not a published comparison of frame rate, resolution, or image quality.
How to choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X
Choose PS5 if you’re starting fresh and GTA VI is the priority
For a buyer without an existing console library, PS5 is a reasonable default based on Rockstar’s stated positioning and the UK price comparison available at the time of reporting. Those points do not prove that GTA VI will run better on PS5; they are practical factors to weigh when choosing a platform.

Choose Xbox Series X if your Xbox library or Game Pass matters
Existing Xbox purchases and regular Game Pass use can make it more valuable to stay in the Xbox ecosystem than to switch solely for GTA VI. Include the cost of replacing or leaving behind access to games you already own when comparing the platforms.
Compare local prices, not just one market’s reported prices
Creative Bloq reported UK prices on September 29, 2026 of £569.99 for PS5 and £669.99 for the Xbox Series X disc edition—a £100 difference for those cited models. Prices vary by region and can change, so check current offers for the exact console versions available where you live.

What is known—and not known—about GTA VI performance?
The reviewed official listings do not provide head-to-head GTA VI measurements for PS5 and Xbox Series X. No reliable frame-rate, resolution, or image-quality winner is established here, so don’t treat Rockstar’s “Plays Best” wording as proof of a specific technical advantage.
PlayStation describes PS5 features GTA VI will use, including Tempest 3D Audio, the PS5 SSD, and DualSense haptics and its integrated speaker. These are platform feature descriptions, not a direct comparison with Xbox. PS5 Pro is listed as supported, but the official pages reviewed do not describe a GTA VI-specific Pro mode or establish an advantage over standard PS5 or Xbox Series X. Creative Bloq reported on September 29, 2026 that Rockstar had not announced a PS5 Pro-specific mode as of that date.

What editions and physical version can you buy?
Rockstar Support lists Standard and Ultimate editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The US PlayStation store page displayed $79.99 for Standard Edition and $99.99 for Ultimate Edition at the time reviewed; those are US listing prices and may change. The figures are not a worldwide price comparison.
Rockstar says the boxed physical package contains a download code, not a disc. Check that the code matches your platform and region before purchasing. Standard Edition owners can separately buy an Ultimate Edition upgrade through the relevant platform storefront after redeeming the Standard code.

Should you wait before choosing?
If you need to decide now, base the choice on your existing games, subscription use, current local console prices, and whether you prefer PS5’s described DualSense and audio features. If your decision depends on which console delivers better frame rates or image quality, the reviewed sources don’t establish that comparison; wait for reliable tests of the released game rather than relying on assumptions.
