Can you switch between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar North Head of Development and Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson said players can switch between Jason and Lucia and bring them together. The character you are not controlling follows their own schedule around the hideout, according to the English translation of Nelson’s interview with Famitsu.
Switching is context-sensitive rather than a guaranteed option at all times. Nelson said in the translated interview: “In some missions you can switch freely, but just like GTA V, when we want you to experience a scene from the perspective of a particular character, we restrict switching.” The English page is translated from Japanese and notes that the wording may differ slightly.

When a mission permits it, you can choose whether to control Jason or Lucia. Nelson described another mission near the end of the footage in which players could alternate between the two protagonists. The available sources do not establish a universal rule for when free switching becomes available.

Story-locked sections
Some scenes keep you with the character whose perspective fits the story. Nelson used an early mission in a high-rise housing complex as an example: control is locked to Jason, whom he described as former special forces. He also said restrictions can depend on story progression.
Automatic handoffs during a mission
Not every change of protagonist is initiated by the player. Nelson described a bank getaway that starts with the player controlling Jason as he fires at pursuing police while Lucia drives. During the sequence, control shifts to Lucia at the wheel, while Jason and Raul shoot from the back seat. That is a mission-driven handoff, not evidence of a separate switch setting.

Can Jason and Lucia act together or separately?
They can be together or operate independently. The Famitsu interview translation describes a convenience-store robbery that can be played alone or with Lucia invited along. In coverage of a Dazed preview, PC Gamer reports an example in which Jason drives on the highway and the player switches to Lucia in the passenger seat to use her in-game phone. GamesRadar also describes the protagonists together or individually, including Jason driving while Lucia rides as passenger and fires shots.
These examples show different ways the pair can be used, not a confirmed player-selectable “couple mode.” That phrase is an interpretation in PC Gamer’s coverage, not an official system name.

What button switches characters in GTA 6?
No specific controller button or menu sequence is confirmed in the sources cited here. Rockstar’s official GTA VI media page lists the game’s Extended Look and trailers, but does not publish switching controls. The Famitsu interview explains when switching is allowed without naming an input.
Do not rely on GTA V’s button layout or fan guesses as confirmed GTA VI instructions. Once the game is available, check its current control settings or an official guide for the exact input. The English Famitsu interview translation states that Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026; release plans can change.
