For most new players, start with GTA 5 Story Mode. Its guided missions teach driving, shooting, character switching and heists while introducing Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips. Move to GTA Online when you want persistent progression, cooperative or competitive activities and a world that continues to change.
Start with GTA Online instead if your main reason for buying the game is to play with friends immediately. Rockstar lets you select either mode at launch, so your choice is reversible rather than a permanent decision.
The short answer
Story Mode is the better first experience for someone new to Grand Theft Auto V, especially if you want a coherent story and a low-friction way to learn the controls. You follow a completed campaign, switch between three protagonists and unlock missions at a deliberate pace.
Recommended Free Tools
GTA Online is the better first stop for a group that primarily wants shared activities. You create a character, meet other players, choose your own jobs and businesses, and build progress that persists between sessions. That freedom also means more systems to understand before the game’s goals become obvious.

| If this describes you | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are new to GTA V or open-world action games | Story Mode | The campaign teaches core mechanics in a paced sequence. |
| You want a character-driven plot | Story Mode | Franklin, Michael and Trevor carry a structured narrative. |
| Your priority is playing with friends today | GTA Online | It is built around shared missions and multiplayer activities. |
| You prefer long-term, self-directed goals | GTA Online | Your character, money, properties and activities support ongoing progression. |
| You mostly play alone but are curious about Online | Story Mode first, then sample Online | You can learn the controls without coordinating a group, then decide whether the online systems suit you. |
There is no requirement to finish the campaign before entering Online. The modes are distinct experiences associated with GTAV, and Rockstar’s launch flow allows you to choose GTA Online or GTA V, which includes Story Mode and GTA Online.
What Story Mode actually offers
A complete single-player campaign
Story Mode follows Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips. Their stories intersect through missions, criminal schemes and heists, and you can switch between them during appropriate parts of the campaign. The structure gives you a clear next objective instead of asking you to design your own schedule.
The campaign is a finished experience rather than a live service. You can pause, save and return at your own pace without depending on other players or an online event. Optional exploration, activities and side content let you leave the critical path when you want a break from missions.

Early missions introduce movement, driving, shooting, navigation and the basic rhythm of accepting and completing jobs. Character switching then adds a distinctive mechanic that is explained in context rather than presented as a large menu of disconnected systems. Heists build on those skills through planning and execution.
This staged introduction matters if you have never played GTA V. In Online, you can access a wide range of activities and purchases quickly, but the game does not force you to understand which businesses, equipment or jobs should come first. Story Mode supplies a natural learning order.
Where Story Mode is the stronger choice
- You want authored characters and a beginning-to-end plot.
- You normally play solo and do not want your progress tied to anyone else’s schedule.
- You prefer clear mission objectives over choosing from many possible activities.
- You want to learn the controls before dealing with online accounts, matchmaking or other players.
What GTA Online actually offers
A player-created character and persistent progress
GTA Online starts with a character you create rather than one of the three campaign protagonists. You earn money, unlock activities and shape your own routine. Progress is designed to continue across sessions, so the appeal comes from building toward the next vehicle, property, business or activity rather than reaching a fixed ending.

- Easy to use
- Excellent quality products
- Good product for use
Rockstar describes Online as an evolving service. Its content and systems can change through updates, so the exact selection of activities and the most useful purchases may vary by platform version and release period. That ongoing design is attractive if you want a game you can revisit for months, but it is less predictable than a completed campaign.

Shared and competitive activities
Online supports cooperative missions as well as competitive activities. You can work with friends, join other players or pursue your own goals in the same broader game world. On PlayStation’s current product information, the PS5 version supports up to 30 other players in online multiplayer; that is a platform-specific capability, not a universal player limit for every edition.
Playing with friends changes the best starting strategy. A group can complete the onboarding together, use cooperative activities while learning and gradually decide which jobs or businesses fit its play style. Invite-only sessions can reduce interruptions while you learn the menus and progression systems.
Why Online can feel complicated at first
Freedom arrives before certainty. You may have several activities available, money to spend and equipment to evaluate without a campaign director telling you which choice is sensible. You also need to understand online sessions, invitations, account access and the difference between personal progress and group activities.
That complexity is not a reason to avoid Online; it is a reason to choose it deliberately. If your friends are already familiar with the mode, their guidance can replace much of the missing structure. If you are alone and new to GTA V, a short Story Mode introduction usually makes the transition easier.

| Decision | Story Mode | GTA Online |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Authored, character-driven campaign | Multiplayer activities and self-directed progression |
| Player identity | Franklin, Michael and Trevor | A character you create |
| Structure | Mission sequence with optional exploration | Open choice of jobs, activities, purchases and social play |
| Progression model | Campaign completion and saved single-player progress | Persistent character and account progression in an evolving service |
| Internet dependency | Designed for solo play | Requires an internet connection and Rockstar account access |
| Social requirement | None | Friends are optional, but multiplayer is the central design |
| Learning experience | Mechanics introduced in a paced sequence | More freedom and more systems to choose among immediately |
The table describes the design difference, not a quality ranking. “Better” depends on whether you value a directed narrative or an ongoing social sandbox.

Which mode should different players start with?
If you have never played GTA V
Begin with Story Mode and play through the opening missions. You do not need to complete every optional activity or finish the entire campaign before trying Online. The useful threshold is learning the basic controls, understanding how missions work and becoming comfortable moving around the map.
After that introduction, enter Online and decide whether its open-ended progression appeals to you. You will retain the campaign as a separate experience, so experimenting online does not erase your Story Mode progress.
If you are buying the game to play with friends
Start in GTA Online, complete its onboarding and ask your friends to use cooperative or invite-only activities while you learn. Agree on a simple first session: create or finish your character setup, join the same session, test voice or text communication and complete one activity together.
Do not spend your first session trying to understand every business, vehicle or upgrade. The mode is easier to evaluate once you have completed a few activities and know whether you enjoy its shared routine.
If you mostly play alone
Story Mode is the lower-friction choice because it does not require you to coordinate sessions. You can still sample Online later; there is no story-completion gate. Treat the first Online session as an introduction to its account, menus and activity selection rather than as a commitment to abandon the campaign.
If you are returning from an older edition
Check migration rules before changing platform or edition. Rockstar documents migration for supported Story Mode saves and GTA Online characters or progression on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced, but the procedure and eligibility are version-specific. A save or character that exists on one platform should not be assumed to move automatically to another.

How to start in Story Mode
- Launch GTAV and choose GTA V or Story Mode. Rockstar’s full GTAV product presents Story Mode and GTA Online as selectable experiences at launch.
- Play the opening missions without rushing to optional content. Use them to learn movement, driving, aiming, navigation and the mission flow.
- Pay attention to character-switch prompts. Switching between Franklin, Michael and Trevor is central to the campaign and appears in context.
- Continue until the controls feel familiar. You can stop after the introductory sequence or continue through the campaign; there is no requirement to finish the story before trying Online.
- Save before changing modes. Keeping a current Story Mode save makes it easy to return to the campaign after testing multiplayer.
How to start in GTA Online
- Select GTA Online from the GTAV launch options. If your edition is Online-only, launch that product instead.
- Sign in to or create a Rockstar account. Online access requires Rockstar account access and an internet connection.
- Complete the onboarding sequence. It introduces your player character, basic activities and the menus used to manage progression.
- Join the same session as your friends. Use the platform’s invitation tools or an invite-only session while learning.
- Choose a small first objective. Complete a cooperative activity, learn how payouts and menus work, and postpone major purchases until you understand what you enjoy.
- Check your platform’s multiplayer requirement. Console online-multiplayer subscriptions are governed by the platform and can change; verify the current rule for your PlayStation or Xbox account.
Do you need friends, a subscription or an internet connection?
Friends
No. Friends are not required to enter GTA Online, but the mode is designed around multiplayer activities, so playing with a group can make the early learning period easier. You can also choose activities that suit solo play or join other players, depending on the current session and activity.

Internet and account access
Yes. GTA Online requires an internet connection and a Rockstar account. Story Mode is designed as the solo component, so it is the appropriate choice when you want to play without online access.
PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core and similar services
Console multiplayer-subscription rules vary by platform, edition and current policy. The product may be installed without the same requirement as online play, so check the current PlayStation or Xbox store and subscription terms for your system before buying specifically for multiplayer. Do not assume that a requirement on one console applies identically to another.
Edition, product and platform notes
Rockstar sells GTAV and GTA Online together, while some platforms also offer GTA Online as a standalone product. Confirm which edition you are purchasing: a standalone Online license does not necessarily include Story Mode.
Rockstar’s store describes the current-generation package this way: “Experience entertainment blockbusters Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online — now upgraded for a new generation with stunning visuals, faster loading, 3D audio and more, plus exclusive content for GTA Online players.” Features and availability can differ by platform, so read the listing for your specific console or PC edition.
If you want both experiences, choose the full GTAV product rather than assuming that an Online-only listing contains the campaign. If you only want multiplayer with friends, the standalone option may be sufficient where your platform offers it.

Save and character migration
Migration is possible in supported edition changes, but it is not a universal cross-platform sync. Rockstar’s documentation covers Story Mode save migration and GTA Online character or progression migration for supported moves involving PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced.
- Identify the exact source and destination platforms.
- Check whether the destination is the same generation, a current-generation upgrade or a PC Enhanced edition.
- Read Rockstar’s current migration instructions before launching the transfer.
- Back up or preserve the original save where the platform permits it.
- Do not assume that every item, character state or mode transfers between unrelated platform families.
Migration rules can be limited to a one-time transfer or a specified version path. Verify the current eligibility requirements rather than relying on an older guide.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the story must be completed first
It does not. Rockstar allows either mode to be selected at launch. Story Mode is a recommendation for learning and narrative context, not an access key for Online.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuying an Online-only edition for the campaign
Some storefronts sell GTA Online separately. Read the product title and included-content list carefully if you want Franklin, Michael and Trevor’s campaign.
Expecting Online to teach itself in a straight line
Online gives you choices rather than a single prescribed route. Use onboarding, a small cooperative activity and an invite-only session to build familiarity before making expensive or irreversible-feeling decisions.
Assuming subscription rules are universal
Online multiplayer access is controlled by the platform. Check the current requirement for your console and account instead of applying a PlayStation rule to Xbox or PC, or an old rule to a current edition.
Starting a migration without checking the edition
Save and character transfers are version- and platform-specific. Confirm the supported path first so you do not mistake an unsupported move for a lost save.
A practical first-week plan
Solo-first plan
- Play the opening Story Mode missions.
- Continue until driving, shooting, navigation and switching characters feel natural.
- Save the campaign.
- Try one Online session to evaluate account setup, activity choice and the amount of freedom.
- Keep the mode that matches your preferred rhythm: authored missions in Story Mode or persistent, self-directed goals in Online.
Friends-first plan
- Confirm every player owns an edition that includes GTA Online.
- Check each console’s current online-multiplayer subscription requirement.
- Complete Online onboarding.
- Use an invite-only or cooperative session for the first group activity.
- After learning the basics, decide whether to continue building an Online character or start Story Mode for the campaign.
Returning-player plan
- Write down your source platform, destination platform and exact game edition.
- Read Rockstar’s current migration instructions.
- Preserve the original save or character until the transfer is confirmed.
- Launch the destination edition and verify both modes separately.
Final recommendation
Choose Story Mode first if you want the most understandable introduction to GTA V, a complete narrative and reliable solo play. Choose GTA Online first if playing with friends and building a persistent character matters more than following a scripted campaign. Because the modes are selectable independently and Story Mode completion is not required for Online, you can use the first mode as an introduction to the other rather than treating the decision as permanent.
