If YouTube shows your GStreamer video but plays no sound, trace the audio branch from its source through conversion and encoding into the muxer. A working video path does not prove that audio is being captured, encoded, or included. Check each boundary before changing settings: the exact cause depends on your pipeline and YouTube’s stream-health message.

Find where the audio disappears

First establish whether audio exists before GStreamer, at the encoder output, and in YouTube’s preview. YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder: if it is already silent there, inspect the routed audio source and encoder; if it sounds healthy there but not after ingestion, investigate the outbound connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guide covers this boundary check.

  • No audio at the source: Check that the intended microphone, file, or other audio input is active and routed into the pipeline. Muxer settings cannot create a signal that is absent.
  • Audio at the source but not in the encoder output: Inspect the branch, negotiated raw-audio caps, encoder, and links to the muxer.
  • Encoder output has audio but YouTube does not: Check the outgoing codec and settings, the muxer’s audio input, and YouTube’s ingestion and connection messages.

Use a local recording or other available inspection output when possible. Test with audio resembling the real stream, rather than relying only on a video preview.

Trace the complete audio branch

A typical RTMP/RTMPS pipeline has separate audio and video branches that join at a muxer:

This is a reference shape, not a copy-and-paste command. The actual source, element names, caps, pad syntax, muxer, and output depend on your installed GStreamer version, plugins, and protocol. GStreamer’s flvmux documentation describes an FLV muxer with audio and video inputs and demonstrates feeding encoded streams into a common muxer.

  1. Confirm the intended source is active. Check the application’s routing and verify the source produces audio buffers. A branch connected to the wrong or silent source will remain silent downstream.
  2. Follow the branch through conversion and encoding. Verify that each element is present and linked, and that the audio encoder emits data.
  3. Verify the encoder-to-muxer link. The encoded audio must reach the muxer’s audio sink pad, not merely exist elsewhere in the graph.
  4. Check the muxer output. Confirm that it contains the expected audio and video before sending it to YouTube.

In a dynamic pipeline, inspect whether the relevant pads have actually been discovered and linked at runtime. A pipeline that starts successfully can still have an unlinked audio path.

Check raw-audio negotiation and encoder settings

The input to an audio encoder is raw audio. If its sample format, channel layout, or sample rate does not match what the encoder accepts, negotiation can fail. GStreamer’s audioconvert handles raw-audio sample representation and channel conversions; audioresample changes raw-audio sample rate. Use them when caps need conversion, not as a substitute for a working source or connected branch. See GStreamer’s guide to audio conversion and resampling elements.

For YouTube Live over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its recommended advanced settings are:

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Audio layout Recommended sample rate Recommended bitrate
Stereo 44.1 kHz 128 Kbps
5.1 surround 48 kHz 384 Kbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular GStreamer pipeline meets current ingestion requirements. Check the current encoder guidance and the message in Live Control Room; YouTube may report an unsupported codec, incorrect sample rate, or bitrate outside the recommended value. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live streaming error messages.

Make sure the muxer receives audio

Confirm that the encoder’s output is compatible with the muxer’s audio pad and that the connection is active. For FLV output, GStreamer’s flvmux documentation shows encoded audio and video connected to the same muxer. If video reaches YouTube while audio does not, inspect the audio sink pad and whether it is receiving buffers; seeing a video stream alone is not evidence that the muxer included sound.

Queues can also affect startup and synchronization. GStreamer’s Basic tutorial 10 notes that x264enc may buffer several seconds of video, potentially requiring more capacity in the audio queue. The tutorial also gives tune=zerolatency as a live-use option, with lower quality as a trade-off. Treat queue sizing or latency tuning as a possible startup or synchronization issue—not as a diagnosis of silence. See GStreamer Basic tutorial 10.

Use YouTube’s stream-health message

YouTube’s Live Control Room can narrow the fault more quickly than guessing from playback. Its error guidance includes “The ingestion stream contains no audio,” which means the encoder is sending no audio. YouTube advises providing one audio stream; multiple audio streams can cause ingestion problems. The same guidance may identify unsupported audio codecs or incorrect settings, including sample rate and bitrate.

Compare that message with what you hear at the encoder output. If the output is silent, focus on the source, caps, encoder, and links. If it contains healthy audio, check that the muxer includes it and that the outbound stream reaches YouTube correctly. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the encoder output and routed sources.

Common symptoms and fixes

What you observe What to check next
Video appears, but the source or encoder preview is silent Confirm the correct audio source is active and routed into the pipeline; inspect audio-element errors and raw-audio negotiation.
Audio is present before encoding but absent afterward Check that the encoder accepts the negotiated raw-audio caps and emits AAC or MP3 for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS.
Encoder output has sound, but YouTube reports no audio Verify the encoded branch reaches the muxer’s audio pad and the outgoing muxed stream; read Live Control Room’s exact error.
YouTube reports multiple audio streams Configure the outgoing stream to provide one audio stream, as YouTube’s error guidance advises.
Audio starts late or the pipeline has startup/synchronization trouble Investigate queue capacity and encoder buffering; GStreamer notes that x264enc can buffer several seconds. Do not assume this alone explains silence.
Audio sounds correct at the encoder but not after ingestion Check the outgoing connection and YouTube stream health, then verify the muxed output contains audio.
