Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a GStreamer YouTube Live stream stops when a video file ends, first check whether the pipeline received an end-of-stream (EOS) event. A finite file normally has an end; EOS is not, by itself, a caps-negotiation failure. To keep broadcasting, your application must provide the next media or another continuing source. If playback should continue across files, compare the negotiated caps around the boundary and normalize incompatible raw video formats before the encoder.
Why the stream stops at the file boundary
A file source eventually runs out of data. GStreamer represents that completion with EOS, which can propagate through the pipeline and produce an EOS message. Once the only source has ended, the pipeline has no further video buffers to send; YouTube cannot receive continuing video from that file alone. The GStreamer design overview describes EOS propagation, while the application-development documentation covers EOS and caps renegotiation as distinct behaviors.
A caps negotiation issue is a separate possibility, particularly when a pipeline changes topology or the next file has a different format. Confirm it from the bus error or debug output rather than inferring it from the fact that playback stopped.
Diagnose EOS before changing caps
- Capture the pipeline bus messages. Record the messages immediately before and after the file boundary. Determine whether the pipeline reports EOS, an error, or both. A clean EOS indicates the source completed; a caps-related error needs separate investigation.
- Check appsrc’s EOS call, if you use appsrc. The application should call
gst_app_src_end_of_stream()after it has pushed its intended final buffer or byte. Do not call it at the end of every file if the broadcast is meant to continue with more input. - Identify the intended end behavior. Decide whether the file should loop, a playlist should advance, another source should take over, or the broadcast should stop. The application must implement that behavior; a finite file does not automatically supply a next file.
- Log caps around the transition. Inspect the actual caps on the final buffers of the first file and the first buffers of the next one. Record them at the source and immediately before the encoder or muxer. This shows whether the formats differ and where a negotiation failure occurs.
- Check the GStreamer version and full pipeline. Keep the pipeline description and version alongside the bus log and caps. Without them, a precise code change or a specific caps string cannot be selected reliably.
Set appsrc caps to match the buffers
If the pipeline uses appsrc, its caps property, when set, must describe the buffers the application pushes, and the caps must be fixed. Mismatched or changing buffer formats can cause downstream negotiation problems. Do not guess caps from the YouTube destination: establish what the application actually pushes and what the downstream encoder requires.

GStreamer’s GstAppSrc documentation says the application should call gst_app_src_end_of_stream() or emit the end-of-stream action signal when it has finished pushing data. After appsrc has sent EOS, it cannot accept more buffers until a flushing seek or a transition through READY. If your design needs more media, arrange the next input and use a documented reset path where appropriate; do not simply push again after EOS.
Handle changing video formats at the boundary
When files differ in raw video format, dimensions, or frame rate, downstream elements may need a compatible format. GStreamer documents that topology changes can trigger renegotiation and that negotiation can fail. Its usual remedy for incompatible formats is to insert suitable conversion elements.

- Compare the caps immediately before and after the file boundary.
- If the raw formats differ, add the appropriate conversion, scaling, or frame-rate elements for the formats in your pipeline.
- Use a capsfilter where needed to establish a stable downstream format that the encoder accepts.
- Recheck negotiated caps at the encoder or muxer and inspect the bus for errors after the change.
Choose concrete caps only after inspecting the source buffers and the encoder’s requirements. A capsfilter cannot make a finite source continue after EOS, and adding converters will not fix a clean EOS when the application has no next input queued.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Observed behavior | Likely branch | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The pipeline reports EOS as soon as the file ends, with no negotiation error. | The source completed normally. | Implement the intended loop, playlist advance, source handoff, or stop behavior. If using appsrc, send EOS only when the intended input is complete. |
| The next file starts, then a bus error reports a caps or format problem. | Negotiation at the transition may have failed. | Compare caps before and after the boundary; use suitable conversion elements and, if needed, a capsfilter for a format the encoder supports. |
| More buffers are pushed after appsrc has sent EOS. | Appsrc has ended its input. | Redesign EOS sequencing or perform the documented reset, such as a flushing seek or transition through READY, before supplying more buffers. |
| The stream freezes but the available logs do not show why. | The symptom alone does not distinguish EOS, negotiation failure, or another pipeline problem. | Collect the pipeline description, GStreamer version, bus messages around the boundary, and caps on the outgoing buffers. |
