Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a 1080p prerecorded video sent through a YouTube Live event, start with YouTube’s live-ingest settings: use H.264 at 14 Mbps for 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 60 fps, target a two-second keyframe interval, and choose CBR-style rate control. In GStreamer, that means setting x264enc bitrate to 14000 or 17000 (kilobits per second) and key-int-max to 60 or 120 frames, respectively. These are starting points, not a complete universal pipeline: test the actual source, encoder build, and YouTube stream health.
Recommended x264enc settings for 1080p
“Prerecorded” describes the video source, not the ingest type. If the video is being sent into a YouTube Live event, configure it for YouTube’s live encoder guidance. YouTube’s current guidance, retrieved in 2026, recommends H.264 video at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; its published minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. The minimums are not the recommended targets. YouTube’s live encoder settings also recommend CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds.
| Target format | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | YouTube H.264 minimum | x264enc two-second keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps | key-int-max=60 |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps | key-int-max=120 |
GStreamer’s x264enc bitrate property uses kilobits per second, while key-int-max is a maximum distance between keyframes measured in frames. The two-second values above therefore assume the stated frame rates. If your source runs at another frame rate, calculate the frame distance from the actual rate and consult YouTube’s matching format guidance rather than copying either example. GStreamer’s x264enc documentation defines the properties and their units.
Set the bitrate and keyframe interval
- Check the installed element. Run
gst-inspect-1.0 x264encto see the properties available in your installed GStreamer build. Property behavior can vary with release or build. - Match the encoder to the source and target. Use the actual input frame rate and intended output resolution; choose 1080p30 or 1080p60 only when that is the format you will send.
- Set the initial rate and keyframe values. For 1080p30, start with
bitrate=14000 key-int-max=60. For 1080p60, start withbitrate=17000 key-int-max=120. These correspond to YouTube’s recommendation and a two-second interval. - Choose a speed preset the machine can sustain. There is no single universally correct preset for every CPU, source, and pipeline. Test the complete pipeline at the target resolution and frame rate; an encoder that cannot keep up can disrupt delivery.
- Configure the rest of the output path for YouTube ingest. The values here do not define a full RTMP pipeline, container, audio format, or YouTube event setup. Follow the requirements for your chosen muxing and transport path rather than treating an unrelated GStreamer network example as a YouTube recipe.
- Test and monitor. Use representative motion and audio, confirm the encoder maintains the intended output, and watch YouTube’s stream health during a test broadcast.
What CBR means with x264enc
YouTube recommends CBR for live ingestion, but GStreamer documents the x264enc CBR mode as “actually ABR.” Do not assume the property name guarantees strict constant-rate output. The bitrate target participates in rate control: in CBR mode it is the target, while in constant-quantizer or constant-quality modes bitrate acts as a maximum. Check the selected rate-control behavior and validate the resulting stream and YouTube health indicators.

Should you use tune=zerolatency?
Not automatically. GStreamer warns that x264enc can buffer frames and add latency; in more complex pipelines that delay can contribute to stalls when queues in other branches fill. Its documentation describes tune=zerolatency as a possible workaround, but it affects encoding quality. GStreamer’s tutorial likewise presents it as a lower-quality choice more suited to live-streaming situations. A prerecorded source does not, by itself, require the setting.
Use it only if reducing encoder delay matters to your broadcast or pipeline behavior, then test the trade-off in image quality and flow. If the pipeline stalls, investigate queue limits and encoder latency; GStreamer notes that relaxing queue limits or using a multiqueue may be necessary in some non-trivial pipelines. GStreamer’s multithreading tutorial discusses pipeline flow and queues.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports an insufficient bitrate: verify that the configured value is in kilobits per second and that your actual output can sustain the recommended target. The published minimum is not the recommended target.
- Keyframes are too far apart: calculate
key-int-maxin frames at the stream’s actual frame rate. For the two examples here, use 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps; do not copy a 15-frame interval from a network-streaming example, which is not a YouTube bitrate or pipeline recommendation. - The pipeline stalls or falls behind: check whether encoder buffering and queue limits are interacting across branches. Test with representative content, and consider queue adjustments or multiqueue as appropriate for the pipeline.
- Encoding quality drops after enabling zerolatency: compare output with the setting disabled. The latency reduction has a quality trade-off, so keep it only when the delay matters enough to justify that cost.
- The result differs across machines or installations: inspect the local element with
gst-inspect-1.0 x264enc, then validate the whole pipeline. Presets, tuning, build details, and machine capacity affect the result.
