Greenland’s rare earths matter more immediately for clean-energy supply-chain security than its lithium. Rare earths are used in the permanent magnets that drive many electric-vehicle traction motors and wind turbines, while lithium is an essential input to rechargeable batteries. Greenland’s reported inventory is about 36.1 million tonnes of rare-earth elements (REE) versus 235,000 tonnes of lithium, according to the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS, 2023). Those figures describe reported resources, not proven reserves, and they are not directly interchangeable economic quantities.
The strategic case is strongest because magnet rare-earth supply is highly concentrated. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says demand for magnet rare earths doubled between 2015 and 2024 and is projected to rise by another one-third by 2030 under today’s policy settings. China supplied 60% of mined magnet rare earths in 2024. Greenland could eventually diversify supply for Europe and North America, but only if deposits move through modern resource definition, permitting, financing, infrastructure, processing and commercial offtake.
The short answer: rare earths have greater near-term strategic importance
Rare earths and lithium solve different engineering problems. Rare-earth magnets provide compact, powerful, efficient torque in many EV motors and generators. Lithium enables the rechargeable electrochemical cells that store energy in EVs, grid systems and portable electronics. A battery can use different cathode chemistries, but every mainstream rechargeable lithium-ion design still depends on lithium somewhere in the cell.

Greenland’s reported rare-earth tonnage is dramatically larger than its reported lithium tonnage. A simple division of the two headline figures gives roughly 154 times more REE by mass, but that ratio should not be read as 154 times the economic value or future output. The estimates differ in geological confidence, mineral composition, recovery technology, project maturity and marketability.

| Question | What the available evidence shows |
|---|---|
| Which resource is larger in Greenland’s reported inventory? | Rare earths: 36.1 million tonnes, compared with 235,000 tonnes of lithium (GEUS, 2023). |
| Which clean-energy technologies use them? | Magnet rare earths support permanent-magnet EV motors and wind-turbine generators; lithium is used in rechargeable batteries. |
| Which supply chain is more concentrated? | China accounted for 60% of mined magnet rare-earth production in 2024 (IEA data reported on its 2026 executive-summary page). |
| What is the main qualification? | GEUS says 78% of Greenland deposit estimates are historical and do not comply with modern international reporting standards. |
For a policymaker focused on reducing exposure to China’s magnet supply chain, Greenland’s rare earths are the more consequential opportunity. For a battery manufacturer, lithium remains strategically important, but Greenland’s lithium opportunity is smaller, mainly hard-rock and still underexplored.
Why rare earths and lithium occupy different parts of the clean-energy system
Permanent magnets in motors and generators
Permanent-magnet machines use rare-earth-containing magnetic materials to produce a strong magnetic field without continuously supplying current to the rotor. In an EV, that can support a compact traction motor with high power density and efficiency. In wind generation, permanent-magnet generators can reduce the need for some mechanical components and are used in several turbine designs.
The supply-chain concern is not simply the amount of ore in the ground. Magnet rare earths must be mined, separated into individual products, converted into suitable compounds and metals, and manufactured into magnets. A country may have a large geological resource yet lack the separation, metal-making or magnet-production capacity needed to supply a vehicle or turbine factory.
Lithium-ion batteries
Lithium ions shuttle between the anode and cathode during charging and discharging. EV packs contain lithium-bearing active materials, along with cells, modules, thermal systems and power electronics. Lithium demand therefore follows battery deployment rather than motor design alone.
Lithium can come from brines or hard-rock ores. GEUS states that Greenland is not considered to have significant potential for lithium in brines. Its opportunity is principally hard-rock mineralisation, which would require mining, concentration and chemical conversion before battery-grade products could be made.
Why one material cannot simply replace the other
Replacing a permanent-magnet motor with an alternative motor design does not create a lithium supply. Likewise, changing battery chemistry does not provide the magnetic material required by a permanent-magnet generator. Vehicle and turbine manufacturers can make technology choices, but those choices shift demand rather than erase the distinct roles of the two commodities.

What Greenland’s reported resource figures actually mean
GEUS reported 36.1 million tonnes of known REE resources and 235,000 tonnes of known lithium resources in 2023. “Known resources” indicate quantities with geological evidence; they are not the same as economically mineable reserves. A reserve requires additional demonstration that the material can be extracted profitably under defined technical, legal, environmental and market assumptions.
GEUS also cautions that 78% of Greenland’s deposit estimates are historical, non-compliant assessments. Historical estimates can identify promising districts, but they may use limited drilling, older analytical methods or classification rules that do not meet current reporting codes. They should not be treated as bankable mine plans.
| Reported measure | Figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Known rare-earth resources | 36.1 million tonnes | GEUS, 2023; reported resources, not reserves. |
| Known lithium resources | 235,000 tonnes | GEUS, 2023; reported resources, not reserves. |
| Historical or non-compliant deposit estimates | 78% | GEUS, 2023; estimates require modern verification before they can support a financing case. |
| Kvanefjeld historical lithium estimate | 235,000 tonnes at about 0.19% Li | Based on limited drill holes; GEUS describes it as non-compliant with international reporting standards. |
The lithium figure therefore signals geological potential, not a scheduled supply source. The same discipline applies to the much larger REE number: tonnage alone does not reveal which magnet elements are recoverable, at what cost, with what waste streams or at what scale.
Where Greenland’s most important deposits are located
The Gardar and Ilímaussaq province
South Greenland’s Gardar/Ilímaussaq province contains the best-known overlap of rare-earth and lithium potential. GEUS calls the Gardar province “an exceptional accumulation of CRM,” meaning critical raw materials. The province includes several deposits and prospects rather than one unified mine plan.
Kvanefjeld (Kuannersuit)
Kvanefjeld, also known as Kuannersuit, is a major South Greenland REE project area with associated uranium and a historical lithium estimate. The uranium co-mineralisation makes regulatory review, waste management and social licence especially important. Any supply forecast must therefore account for uranium-related permitting and community concerns, not only the value of rare earths or lithium.

Kringlerne (Killavaat Alannguat)
Kringlerne, also called Killavaat Alannguat, is another large South Greenland rare-earth and critical-mineral occurrence in the Gardar province. Its presence in the same regional district illustrates why South Greenland is discussed as a critical-minerals hub, but a geological occurrence is not evidence of completed feasibility work or future production.

Motzfeldt
Motzfeldt is a further REE-bearing prospect in the Gardar province. As with the other occurrences, the commercial question is how much material can be defined under current standards and processed into saleable products, not simply whether mineralisation exists.
Why Greenland is not a major lithium-brine province
Greenland’s climate and geology do not make it comparable with the principal continental brine districts. GEUS explicitly says Greenland is not considered to hold significant potential for lithium in brines. Exploration is therefore focused on hard-rock possibilities, including the historical Kvanefjeld estimate, and remains less mature than the headline resource number might suggest.
Geological endowment is not deliverable supply
A clean-energy supply chain needs a sequence of successful conversions: ore to concentrate, concentrate to separated chemical products, and those products to metals, magnets or battery materials. Each conversion can be a bottleneck. An orebody with attractive grades may still fail economically if recovery is poor, reagents are unavailable, waste is difficult to manage or products cannot reach a qualified customer.

For Greenland, the distinction is especially important because no independently verified production date or near-term output forecast has been established for either rare earths or lithium. The available figures support strategic interest, not a claim that Greenland will soon replace existing suppliers.
What turns a resource into supply
- Modern resource definition: Drilling, sampling and laboratory work must convert historical estimates into a current, compliant resource statement.
- Metallurgical testing: Operators must show that the relevant rare earths or lithium can be recovered consistently and converted into saleable products.
- Environmental and social assessment: Baseline studies, waste plans, water management and community engagement must address local risks and consent.
- Permits: Mining, construction, water, transport and any uranium-related approvals must be secured under applicable Greenlandic and Danish frameworks.
- Financing and construction: Equity, debt and contracting must support a mine, processing plant, power system, roads, port facilities and housing.
- Processing and refining: A project needs access to separation, chemical conversion and downstream manufacturing, either locally or through dependable partners.
- Offtake and qualification: Magnet and battery customers must test and accept the products, with contracts that support the financing case.
Failure at any one stage can delay output even when the underlying geology is attractive.
How concentrated supply chains change Greenland’s strategic value
Rare-earth concentration
The IEA reports that magnet rare-earth demand doubled from 2015 to 2024 and is projected to increase by one-third by 2030 under stated policies. China accounted for 60% of mined magnet rare-earth production in 2024. Mining is only the first concentration point: separation, refining and magnet manufacture can be even harder to diversify.

Europe’s exposure
The European Commission reported in 2024 that the EU obtained 98% of its rare-earth supply from China and about 80% of its lithium from Chile. Greenland cannot automatically displace either source. A viable project would need to produce specifications accepted by European manufacturers and connect to a dependable logistics and processing network.
North American diversification
North American buyers also value additional non-Chinese supply, but Greenland’s location does not remove the need for chemical conversion, component manufacturing and long-term contracts. A mine shipping concentrate to another country for separation would diversify mining but leave part of the supply-chain dependency intact.
Are Greenland’s projects real projects or geological potential?
They span the full range from documented mineral occurrences to proposed developments. Treating every named deposit as an imminent mine is misleading.
| Project or district | What is established | What still determines supply potential |
|---|---|---|
| Gardar/Ilímaussaq province | GEUS identifies an exceptional concentration of critical raw materials in South Greenland. | Deposit-by-deposit drilling, compliant resource statements, processing tests, permits and infrastructure. |
| Kvanefjeld/Kuannersuit | REE mineralisation with uranium and a historical lithium estimate of 235,000 tonnes at about 0.19% Li. | Modern verification, uranium-related approvals, social licence, financing, construction and customer qualification. |
| Kringlerne/Killavaat Alannguat | Named South Greenland REE and critical-mineral occurrence. | Demonstrated extraction economics, compliant resources, permits, processing and logistics. |
| Motzfeldt | Named REE-bearing prospect in the Gardar province. | Resource definition, metallurgy, environmental review, finance and infrastructure. |
| Tanbreez | The operator describes it as fully permitted and positioned to add rare-earth supply for North America. | The statement is from the company; independent confirmation of current permits, financing, construction progress and production timing is still required. |
Permit language is particularly easy to overread. Even if a company holds a permit, commercial production still depends on financing, construction, power, transport, processing and buyer qualification. Project ownership, permit status and milestones can change, so they should be checked against current official and company records before making an investment or procurement decision.

Transport and port access
Greenland’s remote settlements, severe weather and seasonal sea conditions can raise the cost and complexity of moving equipment, concentrate, reagents and finished products. A mine needs a dependable route to a port and a port capable of handling heavy construction loads and regular shipments.
Power and industrial services
Mining and chemical processing require reliable electricity, water, maintenance, communications and skilled labour. A project may need to build much of that system itself, increasing capital requirements and construction risk.

Processing location
Shipping unprocessed or partly processed material overseas can reduce the local footprint but leaves the project dependent on foreign separation and refining capacity. Building those facilities in Greenland could capture more value and improve supply-chain control, while also increasing technical, environmental and financing demands.
Environmental and social licence
Kvanefjeld’s uranium association makes radiation management, tailings design and regulatory oversight central issues. More broadly, Arctic projects must address water, wildlife, landscape, shipping impacts, employment, cultural priorities and local consent. A technically feasible mine without durable social acceptance is not a dependable supply source.
Which resource matters most for each clean-energy buyer?
| Reader or industry | Most relevant Greenland question | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| EV motor manufacturer | Can Greenland supply qualified magnet rare-earth products? | Motor performance depends on magnetic materials, while the key risk is access to separated products, metals and magnets rather than ore alone. |
| EV battery manufacturer | Can a hard-rock lithium project deliver battery-grade chemicals? | Greenland’s lithium potential is smaller, underexplored and not based on major brine resources. |
| Wind-turbine manufacturer | Can rare-earth supply be diversified with reliable processing? | Permanent-magnet generators are exposed to magnet-material availability and processing concentration. |
| European policymaker | Would Greenland reduce dependence on concentrated imports? | Potentially, but only with compliant resources, permitted production, processing capacity, logistics and offtake. |
| North American buyer | Can a Greenland project provide a dependable non-Chinese source? | Possible in principle; the current evidence does not establish a verified production schedule. |
What would have to happen by 2030 for Greenland to make a difference?
Under the IEA’s stated-policy outlook, magnet rare-earth demand continues growing through 2030. Greenland would contribute meaningfully only if at least one project completed the long chain from exploration to qualified product before then. That requires more than announcing a resource: drilling must resolve geological uncertainty, metallurgy must demonstrate recovery, regulators and communities must accept the development, and investors must fund construction.
A project could still improve diversification without supplying the entire market. Even modest, dependable output from a non-Chinese source can give manufacturers an alternative, support stockpiling and encourage additional processing capacity. Conversely, a large deposit that remains unbuilt does not reduce import dependence.
How to read future Greenland mineral announcements
- Check the classification: Look for a current resource or reserve statement prepared under a recognized reporting code, rather than an undated historical estimate.
- Separate ore from product: Ask whether the figure refers to contained REE or lithium, concentrate, separated chemicals, metal or finished magnets or battery material.
- Look for metallurgy: A credible project should publish recovery assumptions, impurity handling and the intended product specification.
- Verify permits: Distinguish exploration rights, development approvals, construction permits and operating authorizations.
- Test the infrastructure plan: Identify the power source, port, shipping season, roads, water system and processing location.
- Identify the buyer: Binding offtake and customer qualification are stronger evidence than a non-binding memorandum.
- Watch uranium and community issues: For Kvanefjeld, uranium management and social licence are integral to the schedule, not side considerations.
Bottom line for clean-energy supply chains
Greenland has more reported rare-earth resources than lithium resources, and rare earths have the clearer near-term strategic value because magnet supply is concentrated while demand is rising. Lithium remains important for batteries, but Greenland is not a major lithium-brine province and its hard-rock opportunity is underexplored. The decisive question is not which number is larger; it is which deposits can be converted into compliant, permitted, financed and processed products. Until that chain is demonstrated, Greenland should be treated as a significant diversification option—not a confirmed replacement for Chinese rare-earth supply or established lithium exporters.
