What is the Green Lantern Corps?
The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic organization whose members patrol the universe using power rings. DC describes the Corps as a peacekeeping force made up of members from many sentient species, with its headquarters on Oa. Its fictional history includes periods when the Corps was destroyed and later rebuilt.
DC’s character profile describes a standing force of 7,200 members patrolling 3,600 sectors. Those are figures from DC’s profile, not real-world statistics or a roster count guaranteed to apply in every continuity.
What powers does a Green Lantern ring have?
A Green Lantern ring turns its wearer’s intent into green energy effects. DC’s character profile lists hard-light constructs, instant weaponry, force fields, flight, durability, and alien technology among the ring’s abilities. In practical terms, a Lantern might shape energy into a shield, tool, restraint, weapon, or vehicle.

Willpower is the defining association of the green ring, while a wearer’s imagination and judgment influence what they create. The exact limits and feats are story-dependent; DC’s profile is a general overview, not a technical rulebook. It does not establish one universal charge duration or a complete list of weaknesses for every ring and era.
Who are the best-known Green Lantern characters?
Earth has had several Green Lanterns, but the Corps is much larger than its human members. The people below are useful starting points, not an exhaustive roster or a claim that each has the same status in every story.
Hal Jordan
Hal Jordan is a test pilot and one of DC’s most prominent Earth-based Green Lanterns. DC’s character profile identifies him as a notable member of the Corps. His ring origin also connects him to alien Lanterns: Tomar-Re was the second Green Lantern Hal encountered after receiving his ring from Abin Sur.

John Stewart
John Stewart is another long-running Earth Lantern named in DC’s character material. In coverage of a 2021 Green Lantern series, DC presented him in the role of an ambassador. That description belongs to that series’ story context rather than defining his role across all appearances.

Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner are also among the Earth Lanterns identified in DC’s profile and editorial coverage. Kyle’s stories have involved the emotional spectrum and white-ring themes, but those storylines do not make a particular ring or status his permanent identity.
Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz
Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz are named among Earth’s Green Lanterns in DC’s Corps profile. That profile frames them as newer recruits relative to its account; it should not be read as a current ranking or a statement that their roles remain unchanged in every continuity.

Jo Mullein and Keli Quintela
DC’s introduction to its 2021 Green Lantern series featured Jo Mullein, a detective investigating events on Oa, and Keli Quintela, known as Teen Lantern. Their devices and precise relationship to the Corps should not be assumed to match the same ring origin or status as every other Lantern.
Alien members: Tomar-Re, Ch’p, and Mogo
The Corps’ multi-species membership is a major part of the mythology. DC’s September 2026 feature on alien Lanterns highlights Tomar-Re, Ch’p, and Mogo among many examples. It describes Tomar-Re as a scientist from Xudar and a member of the Corps Honor Guard; Ch’p is associated with Sector 1014, and Mogo is a notable Corps figure. These are selected examples, not a complete list of alien Green Lanterns.
What do the Green Lantern colors mean?
In DC’s familiar emotional-spectrum framework, different ring colors are associated with different emotions. DC editors Matt Idelson and Pat McCallum described the colors as representing emotions. The associations below are fictional lore, not a scientific or psychological classification.

Not every color represents an equivalent branch in a stable, permanent organization. DC material also features the Black Lanterns, Phantom Ring, and Ultraviolet Corps, among other ring types and groups. Their origins, membership, and place in continuity depend on the story.

The simplest distinction is the emotion each color represents: green is associated with willpower, while yellow is associated with fear. DC’s description of The Sinestro Corps War frames the conflict as fear against will, with Sinestro’s Corps wielding the yellow light of fear. Green Lanterns and the Sinestro Corps are therefore related through the spectrum mythology, but they are not the same group with different uniforms.
Red Lanterns offer another contrast: their color is associated with rage rather than the green ring’s willpower. Other groups have their own story histories, aims, and identities, so color alone does not make their missions or members interchangeable.

Why Green Lantern rosters and ring details can change
DC’s character profile and series coverage describe particular versions of characters and the Corps; they do not establish one uninterrupted canon shared by every comic, adaptation, or era. A character may be foregrounded in one series, hold a particular role for that story, or take part in a spectrum storyline without keeping that status permanently. Likewise, oaths and ring categories have variants in DC stories. Treat any roster or power description as attached to its stated story context unless a source establishes otherwise.

For a collected story focused on the yellow-versus-green conflict, DC Shop lists Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps War Compendium Graphic Novel, a paperback collection of Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, and related issues.
