The release named machine-learning analysis, credential-theft-site detection, lookalike-domain checks, user warnings, investigation tools, bulk message removal, and integrations with security-awareness and DMARC services. Those are historical launch claims—not proof of current capabilities or availability in 2026.
What GreatHorn announced in August 2020
BetaNews characterized the update as “visibility across the entire email security stack” combined with intelligent phishing detection and incident response. GreatHorn’s own August 11, 2020 announcement presented the platform as protecting organizations before, during and after email attacks.
The stated objective was to show risk that native cloud-email controls might not expose on their own, then shorten the path from detection to investigation and remediation. The announcement also connected email defense with user training and domain-authentication work through named partner integrations.
Capabilities described in the launch materials
| Capability | Role in the 2020 platform description | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Machine-learning threat detection | Analyze messages for phishing and other malicious behavior. | Described by GreatHorn in a February 10, 2020 announcement republished by 406 Ventures. |
| Computer-vision analysis | Identify websites used for credential theft, including visual imitations of legitimate login pages. | Vendor-described feature; no independent performance measurement was supplied. |
| Lookalike-domain detection | Flag domains that resemble trusted brands or organizational domains. | Included in GreatHorn’s 2019–2020 feature account. |
| Branded email warnings | Present a user-facing warning when a message is considered risky. | Listed by the vendor as part of its protection workflow. |
| GreatHorn Reporter plug-in | Let employees report suspicious messages from the client side. | Named in the vendor’s announcement; current client support is not established. |
| Bulk removal of malicious messages | Search for and remove messages after delivery instead of handling mail only at the gateway. | Vendor-described post-delivery remediation capability. |
| Search and forensic tools | Investigate messages, users and related indicators during an incident. | Included in the historical platform description; no independent usability or speed test was provided. |
| Bidirectional API | Exchange data and actions with SOAR, SIEM and other security products. | GreatHorn said the API supported these integrations in the 2020 materials. |
How the “before, during and after” model works
Before delivery and user interaction
Detection was intended to inspect threats such as phishing, malicious links, credential theft and impersonation. Lookalike-domain checks and computer-vision analysis were aimed at attacks that can evade simple sender or URL rules.

During delivery and user decision-making
Branded warnings and the GreatHorn Reporter plug-in were designed to involve employees at the point of risk. The launch framing treated users as part of the control system rather than relying solely on a perimeter gateway.
After delivery
Search, forensics and bulk removal addressed the situation in which a message had already reached mailboxes. That post-delivery emphasis is what distinguishes the announcement from a gateway-only description: investigators could look for related messages and remove them in bulk, according to the vendor.

Named integrations: training and DMARC
The August 2020 PR Newswire release specifically named Inspired eLearning for security-awareness training and phishing simulations, and dmarcian for DMARC. In the announcement’s framing, these connections joined technical email detection with two adjacent controls: educating users and protecting the authenticity of organizational domains.
Inspired eLearning CEO Kyle Metcalf said, “Today’s service providers are looking for easier ways to educate their end-users and empower them to become the strongest line of defense for a company when facing a cyber threat.” dmarcian CEO Tim Draegen said, “dmarcian’s partnership with GreatHorn ensures safe and secure email standards through the use of DMARC,” These statements describe the 2020 partnership announcement; they do not verify that either integration remains offered.

What the company reported about scale and effectiveness
A February 2020 GreatHorn announcement attributed to co-founder and CEO Kevin O’Brien a finding from one Global 1000 company:
“In one Global 1000 company, we found that a traditional gateway missed 40 percent of executive impersonations, and 15-20 percent of all threats, including business email compromise, credential theft, and malicious links.”

The release did not identify the company or provide methodology in the cited excerpt, so this should be treated as an attributed company finding rather than an independent benchmark.
The same release said GreatHorn analyzed “nearly a billion emails every month,” reported a $13 million Series B round and expanded its workforce by 150% during 2019. These are company-reported 2019 figures, not current usage or performance statistics. No named independent study in the available material establishes a present-day detection rate, false-positive rate or response-time advantage.

What an organization would need to evaluate
For a current procurement review, the 2020 feature list is only a starting point. Confirm each item against the product documentation and a contract or demonstration:
- Which cloud email platforms and mail-flow architectures are supported?
- Can the service inspect inbound, outbound and already-delivered messages?
- What threats are covered, and how are machine-learning or visual signals explained to analysts?
- How do warnings and employee reporting work in the current mail clients?
- What search, forensic and bulk-remediation actions are available, and what permissions do they require?
- Which SIEM, SOAR, identity, training and DMARC integrations are maintained today?
- What routing, API, tenant and data-retention requirements apply?
- What support levels, service commitments and incident-response assistance are included?
Availability in 2026: what is and is not confirmed
Gartner Peer Insights displayed a GreatHorn product overview updated October 13, 2025, and KuppingerCole listed GreatHorn research dated September 18, 2025. Those third-party listings show that the product remained referenced recently, but they do not confirm that GreatHorn is accepting new customers, operating the same service, maintaining the named integrations or providing support in 2026. No current official availability statement is established by the sources for this article.
Consequently, the August 11, 2020 launch should be read as a historical product update. Organizations considering it now need direct confirmation of the vendor’s legal entity, deployment model, supported email environments, roadmap and support channel before treating any listed capability as current.
How GreatHorn fits into an email-security comparison
Compare the historical GreatHorn proposition with alternatives using the same questions rather than assuming a winner:
