That is an extra €700 per player—about 38.9% more than the current average—and €2.8 million in additional funding overall. The 28% in the headline refers to an earlier increase announced in the 2025 budget, not the GPA’s current request. The new proposal has been presented to Government; the cited reports do not say it has been approved.
What the GPA is asking for
GPA representatives and inter-county players met Minister for Sport Patrick O’Donovan on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, and presented findings from the GPA’s 2026 Annual Member Survey, according to the Irish Examiner. The association asked the Government to increase annual grant support from an average €1,800 to €2,500 per player, an additional €700 per player and €2.8 million in total.
| Funding point | Amount per player annually | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Current reported average | €1,800 | Existing level reported by the GPA |
| GPA’s requested level | €2,500 | Proposal presented to Government; approval is not reported |
| Change requested | €700, approximately 38.9% of €1,800 | Would require an additional €2.8 million overall, according to the GPA |
The figures describe the GPA’s request and the reported average support; they should not be read as confirmation that every player receives an identical amount.
Why the headline says 28%
The 28% figure belongs to the previous funding step. In its 2025 announcement, the GPA said State support for inter-county player grants had increased by 28%, bringing the total fund to €7.2 million and average support to €1,800 per player. The association described that increase as the first phase of a player-set goal of €10 million in annual funding. The GPA’s 2025 announcement sets out that history.

- HIGH-QUALITY GAELIC TRAINING FOOTBALL – To ensure this ball is extremely responsive throughout training sessions, it is manufactured from a blend of virgin grade natural rubber and synthetic rubber. This mix creates an ultra-durable Gaelic football which can be used throughout intense training sessions without suffering from corrosion.
- LAMINATED FOR DURABILITY – To further strengthen this training balls durability its outer panels are laminated with three layers of polyester viscose. These added protective layers ensure the FORZA Gaelic Training Football can be used on both natural and artificial GAA pitches with the ball suffering from a loss in performance.
- AIRLOCK BLADDER – Manufactured with a premium airlock bladder, this Gaelic training football will retain air once inflated. This component ensures the GAA training ball will provide a consistent pressure level throughout training sessions.
- HAND FASTENED SEAMS – All of this Gaelic football’s panels are stitched together by hand. This technique creates a solid bond which prevents any risk of this Gaelic training football’s panels from separating after extended use.
By contrast, the current request would move the average from €1,800 to €2,500. The difference is €700; divided by €1,800, that is approximately 38.9%. Calling the present proposal a 28% increase would conflate it with the earlier budget increase.
What the GPA survey preview says
The GPA said 3,555 members responded to its 2026 Annual Member Survey across four codes. In the figures it publicized, 49% of players said there were two weeks or less between the end of club activity and the start of inter-county training. The GPA’s announcement provided that figure alongside its funding request.

The Irish Examiner reported additional preview findings: seven in ten female players said the timing of expenses was an issue, and 94% of players preferred monthly reimbursements. It also reported that more than two-thirds of respondents were interested in supporting social-impact initiatives and education. The Examiner’s account attributes those figures to the survey preview.
How to interpret the figures
The full survey had not yet been published in the cited reporting; the Examiner said it was expected later in October 2026. The preview figures therefore do not establish the survey’s sampling method, response rate, representativeness, exact question wording, or results by code. They also do not show that the reported expense or scheduling issues were caused by the grant level. Treat them as findings attributed to the GPA survey preview, not as independently verified measures of all inter-county players.

Has the Government agreed to the increase?
The reporting cited here establishes that the GPA presented its request to the Government. It does not report an acceptance, an approved payment, or a date when a higher grant would begin. The €2,500 figure is the GPA’s requested annual support level, not a confirmed new rate.
GPA chief executive Tom Parsons said Government funding was “an important recognition of the extraordinary commitment made by inter-county players to our National games,” and described the request as “an additional €700 a year per player, bringing the support to €2,500,” according to the Irish Examiner.
