There is no universal winner. GORE-TEX, eVent and Pertex Shield are technology families, not three identical fabrics. The best choice depends on the finished jacket’s exact membrane version, face fabric, backer, seam sealing, fit, ventilation, weight, durability and care requirements. A high-output hiker may value a different construction from a commuter or an alpine climber.

Use the brand name as a starting point, then compare the specific garment. GORE-TEX publishes a laminate waterproofing claim above 28,000 mm water column; one eVent BIO specification lists 10 m water column, 20,000 g/m²/24 h MVTR by JIS L 1099 B2 and a 25 g/m² membrane; Pertex Shield includes versions such as Shield Pro and Shield Air with different design priorities. Those figures are not directly comparable rankings.

What the three names actually describe

The first mistake in this comparison is treating each name as one fixed fabric. Each is a group of laminates or membrane constructions used in finished garments.

GORE-TEX is a laminate system

GORE-TEX describes a membrane used with textile layers in a laminate. Depending on the product generation, the membrane may use expanded polyethylene (ePE) or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), combined with polyurethane in some constructions. The company says its laminates consistently exceed 28,000 mm of water-column pressure. That is a brand-level statement about its laminates, not a result from a three-way garment test.

  • Convenient Dosage: One full cap of product is approximately 50ml for easy measurement and application

The membrane is only one part of a jacket. The outer fabric, inner backer, number of layers, seam tape, pattern and hood design determine how that laminate performs when worn. GORE-TEX specifically describes seam tape as the method used to seal needle holes around stitched seams.

eVent uses Direct Venting technology

eVent’s waterproof lines use an air-permeable Direct Venting approach intended to move water vapour while blocking rain. eVent offers several lines for different conditions, so a product carrying the eVent name does not automatically share the same weight, membrane, face fabric or target use as another eVent garment.

One published eVent BIO specification gives a 10 m water column, 20,000 g/m²/24 h moisture-vapour transmission rate (MVTR) measured with JIS L 1099 B2, and a membrane weight of 25 g/m². eVent notes that results can vary by product. Keep those numbers attached to eVent BIO and that test method rather than treating them as specifications for every eVent shell.

Pertex Shield is a family of constructions

Pertex Shield combines a face fabric, membrane and, in some garments, a backer. The family includes different constructions for different priorities. Shield Pro is positioned for durability and demanding conditions, while Shield Air uses an open nanofibre structure intended to permit airflow.

“Pertex Shield” without a version name is therefore incomplete information. A lightweight running shell and a more robust mountain jacket can both be labelled Shield while using different fabrics, membranes and seam treatments.

Waterproofness: what the numbers mean

Water-column testing applies increasing water pressure to fabric until water penetrates. A larger number indicates greater resistance in that particular test, but it does not by itself describe a jacket’s real-world protection. Pressure from a backpack hip belt, kneeling, leaning on wet rock, abrasion, ageing and unsealed seams can all matter.

Technology or specification Published figure How to interpret it
GORE-TEX laminates Above 28,000 mm water column GORE-TEX’s stated laminate standard; not an independent comparison with equivalent eVent and Pertex garments.
eVent BIO 10 m water column Specification for the BIO membrane line; keep it separate from other eVent lines and products.
Pertex Shield Not stated as one family-wide value Check the exact Shield version and garment specification.

Manufacturers may report different methods, sample preparation and product generations. A water-column result from one method should not be placed in a league table against a result from another method without knowing that context. For buying, verify whether the jacket has fully taped seams, what areas are reinforced and whether the maker defines the garment as waterproof rather than merely water resistant.

Breathability and moisture management

“Breathable” means that water vapour from perspiration can pass through the clothing system. It does not mean that a jacket actively cools you, nor does it guarantee comfort during hard efforts. Humid weather, a wet base layer, a pack covering the back and a poor fit can all limit vapour movement.

Why eVent is often considered for high-output use

Direct Venting is designed to move vapour through an air-permeable membrane. That design may appeal to runners, cyclists and fast hikers who generate heat quickly, but the relevant question is the specification of the particular eVent garment: membrane line, vents, face fabric, backer and cut. No eVent-wide breathability ranking is established by the published information.

What GORE-TEX breathability depends on

GORE-TEX membranes are part of a laminate system. The inner backer, outer fabric treatment, seam tape and garment pattern affect how efficiently vapour leaves the wearer. A shell with pit zips and a generous cut can feel less clammy than a lighter shell with no vents, even when both carry the same membrane name.

How Pertex Shield approaches airflow

Shield Air’s open nanofibre structure is intended to allow airflow. Shield Pro prioritises durability for demanding conditions. Those goals can lead to different garment weights and constructions, so compare the version rather than assuming that every Shield jacket has the airflow characteristics of Shield Air.

Durability, weight and packability

Durability is a property of the complete garment, not just the membrane. A denier-heavy face fabric, protective backer and robust seam tape generally add weight and bulk; an ultralight shell may save space while requiring more careful use. Neither approach is automatically better.

For alpine and severe weather

Look for a construction intended for prolonged exposure, abrasion resistance at shoulders and hips, a hood that works with your helmet, and seam coverage appropriate to the activity. A durable version such as Pertex Shield Pro may fit this brief, but the exact jacket still needs to be inspected. A GORE-TEX or eVent label alone does not confirm reinforcement, hood geometry or pocket protection.

For fast hiking and trail running

Prioritise low weight, packability, usable ventilation and a cut that does not flap while moving. An air-oriented eVent line or Pertex Shield Air may be worth considering, but check whether the garment sacrifices abrasion resistance or has a very thin face fabric. Vent zippers can provide more immediate cooling than membrane differences during intense effort.

For everyday rainwear

Comfort, quiet fabric, fit over normal clothing and simple care can matter more than the highest laboratory water-column number. A moderately light shell with reliable seam sealing and a practical hood may be a better daily choice than a heavier mountain design.

How to compare two actual jackets

When you have model names, use this checklist instead of comparing logos.

  1. Identify the exact membrane and generation. Record whether the jacket uses GORE-TEX ePE, GORE-TEX ePTFE, a named eVent line, Shield Pro, Shield Air or another Shield construction.
  2. Check the layer construction. Note whether the garment uses two, two-and-a-half or three layers, and whether the inner surface is a backer, print or exposed membrane. This affects comfort, abrasion resistance and cleaning.
  3. Read the waterproofing details. Confirm that all seams are taped or otherwise sealed, and look for exposed stitching, storm flaps and water-resistant zippers.
  4. Compare ventilation. Count pit zips, front-zip design, mesh pockets and opening options. A membrane cannot replace a vent that you can open immediately.
  5. Check fit and layering room. Try the jacket over the insulation you actually wear. Tight shoulders can restrict movement and compress the inner layers; excessive volume can let wind-driven rain enter at the hem or cuffs.
  6. Record weight and packed size. Use the same size for both products. Manufacturer weights can vary by size and may exclude accessories.
  7. Inspect high-wear zones. Look at shoulder, elbow, seat and hem reinforcement if you carry a pack or work around rock and vegetation.
  8. Read the care label and support terms. Confirm washing instructions, DWR reproofing guidance, repair options and the garment maker’s warranty before purchase.
  9. Compare price and availability locally. Prices, stock and warranty coverage vary by region and season; they are not determined by the membrane name.

Which is more breathable: eVent or GORE-TEX?

There is no defensible universal answer from brand names alone. eVent’s Direct Venting design is explicitly intended to move vapour through an air-permeable membrane, while GORE-TEX offers multiple laminate generations and constructions. The finished jacket’s backer, face-fabric treatment, seam tape, fit and vents can outweigh the membrane distinction.

If two garments are otherwise similar, compare their model-level MVTR results only when the test method is the same. The published eVent BIO figure of 20,000 g/m²/24 h uses JIS L 1099 B2; do not compare it directly with an unqualified number from another method. In hot, high-output conditions, opening pit zips or the front zip often produces a larger immediate comfort change than a small laboratory difference.

Is Pertex Shield waterproof enough for hiking?

A Pertex Shield jacket can be suitable for hiking when its exact construction is designed and specified for the expected rain, exposure and pack use. Shield is a family, so check the version, seam sealing, face fabric, hood, cuffs and care instructions. Shield Pro is aimed at durability and demanding conditions; Shield Air prioritises airflow. Neither label alone tells you how a particular model handles prolonged pressure from a loaded pack or repeated abrasion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For day hikes in sustained rain, choose a fully seam-sealed garment with a hood and enough room for your layers. For ultralight fastpacking, weigh the lower mass against reduced abrasion margin and follow the maker’s limits. If a retailer lists only “Pertex Shield” with no version or construction details, ask for the model specification before relying on it for serious trips.

Care, DWR and common failure symptoms

What DWR does

Durable water repellent (DWR) is the treatment on the outer face fabric that helps water bead and run off. It is not the waterproof membrane. When the face fabric wets out, the jacket may feel clammy and its breathability can fall even though the membrane and seam tape remain intact.

Routine care

  1. Follow the garment maker’s label before selecting detergent, temperature or drying method.
  2. Wash technical outerwear with the recommended cleaner and remove residue that can interfere with the face treatment.
  3. When the label permits, use low-heat tumble drying to rejuvenate existing DWR.
  4. If water no longer beads after cleaning and permitted drying, apply a suitable DWR replenisher such as Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In or TX.Direct Spray-On according to that product and garment instructions.
  5. Inspect seam tape, cuffs, hem and high-abrasion areas after each season.

Reproofing does not repair a torn membrane, delaminated laminate or failed seam tape. Those problems require the garment maker’s repair guidance or replacement.

Diagnosing a wet jacket

  • Outer fabric is dark and soaked, but no droplets appear inside: the DWR may be exhausted; clean and rejuvenate or replenish it as allowed by the label.
  • Water enters at one seam or zipper: inspect seam tape, zipper alignment and storm flaps; this points to a construction or damage issue rather than ordinary face-fabric wetting.
  • Condensation covers the inside during hard effort: reduce internal layers, open vents and check whether a pack is blocking airflow. This is not proof that the membrane has failed.
  • Peeling, bubbling or a sticky inner surface: the laminate or coating may be deteriorating; stop aggressive washing and contact the manufacturer.

Decision guide by activity

Primary use What to prioritise How to read the labels
Alpine climbing or severe, prolonged rain Durable face fabric, complete seam sealing, helmet-compatible hood, robust closures and repair support Consider the exact heavy-duty GORE-TEX, eVent or Shield Pro garment; do not select from the membrane name alone.
High-output hiking, trail running or cycling Air exchange, pit or core vents, low weight and a cut that works in motion Investigate eVent Direct Venting or Shield Air models, while checking their durability and seam construction.
Fastpacking and emergency shell use Packability, low mass, adequate waterproofing and realistic abrasion limits Compare the model’s packed size and face fabric; a lighter construction may need more care.
Daily commuting and general hiking Comfort, quiet fabric, easy care, hood adjustment and reliable closures Any family can work if the finished jacket fits and is fully seam sealed.

What is and is not established about a three-way winner

GORE-TEX, eVent and Pertex describe their own technologies and product families. Those descriptions establish design intent and some brand-specific measurements, but they do not establish a controlled independent comparison of equivalent garments across all three. A higher published water-column figure does not prove better breathability, longer life or greater comfort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent testing can be useful when it states the garment models, test methods, wear conditions and sample preparation. Without those details, rankings copied from one jacket to an entire technology family are unreliable. Treat a membrane name as one data point in a garment decision, alongside construction, activity, climate, fit and maintenance.

Bottom line for choosing one

Choose the specific jacket that best matches your activity, not the logo that sounds most advanced. Start with the weather and exertion you expect, then verify the membrane version, layer construction, seam sealing, ventilation, weight, durability and care requirements. eVent may suit a wearer who values air-permeable Direct Venting; Shield Air or Shield Pro may suit different airflow or durability priorities; a GORE-TEX laminate may offer the construction and support desired for another use. None is automatically best in every finished garment.
