The GoPro HERO10 Black remains a capable action camera for bright, fast-moving scenes: its GP2 processor makes operation noticeably more responsive, and its headline modes reach 5.3K at 60fps or 4K at 120fps. Stuff reviewer Basil Kronfli praised its daylight detail and slow motion, but found low-light footage weak and battery life disappointing. It is a strong fit if speed, stabilization, and high-frame-rate capture matter more than long runtimes or dim-scene quality.
What the HERO10 Black does well
The HERO10 Black is a 2021-generation action camera whose main upgrade over its predecessor is not a new sensor: Stuff reports that it shares the HERO9’s sensor, while a GP2 processor and updated processing pipeline improve responsiveness and capture options. In Basil Kronfli’s hands-on review, the camera felt much quicker to operate than earlier GoPros, including improved touch response.
The rear 2.27-inch screen is a touchscreen. A front display provides a framing preview, but it is not touch-sensitive. The camera weighs 153g according to Stuff and is waterproof to 10m (33ft) without an additional housing, according to GoPro’s product specifications.
Video, photos, and slow motion
GoPro lists maximum capture modes of 5.3K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 120fps, and 2.7K at 240fps, along with 23MP still photos. These are maximum resolution and frame-rate combinations, not a promise that every mode will suit every scene or workflow. GoPro also claimed at launch that 5.3K provides 91% more resolution than 4K; that figure is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independent test result.

In Stuff’s review, daylight footage delivered rich color, ample detail, and generally good exposure. Kronfli described dynamic range as good but not exceptional. The high frame rates are particularly useful when you want to slow action down, making the HERO10 appealing for sports, movement, or other bright scenes where slow-motion playback is part of the plan.
Stabilization: effective, but not flawless
HyperSmooth 4.0 is a central feature, and Stuff found it generally effective. The review also noted mild judder when stabilization was working hard, so it is better to think of it as a strong aid to handheld or moving footage than as a guarantee of perfectly smooth results in every situation.

GoPro lists horizon leveling with tilt limits of up to 45 degrees. Its 2021 launch announcement qualifies that limit to specified high-performance modes, including 4K60, 2.7K120, and 1080p120; the 45-degree figure should not be treated as applying to every video setting.
Low-light quality is the main image compromise
The HERO10 improves on earlier GoPros in low light, according to Stuff, but Kronfli still judged it a poor choice for dim scenes. If you regularly film indoors, at night, or in shaded conditions, the camera’s high resolution and frame rates do not erase that limitation. The review also found that HDR photos in strongly backlit scenes could show grain in shadow areas.

Battery life and what you need to use it
Battery life is one of the clearest drawbacks. Stuff reported continuous shooting time behind the HERO9 and recommended spare cells for long sessions, particularly hyperlapses. The HERO10 uses the same batteries as the HERO9; GoPro specifies a removable, rechargeable 1720mAh battery. Actual runtime depends on recording settings and use, and no single runtime figure is established here.
A microSD card is required and is not included, according to GoPro. The camera can be powered over USB-C, but Stuff notes that doing so with the battery door open compromises its waterproofing. Plan for a card before shooting, and do not rely on the camera’s 10m water resistance while the door is open.

Mods and audio options
The HERO10 supports GoPro Mods and the Quik app. For an external microphone setup, Kronfli suggested the Media Mod. GoPro also lists Media Mod, Display Mod, Light Mod, and Max Lens Mod uses; check current product listings and compatibility before choosing an accessory, since accessory availability can change.

The HERO10 makes the most sense for someone who values a responsive interface, high frame rates, and reliable stabilization in daylight more than long battery life or strong low-light performance. It is also more compelling when 5.3K60, 4K120, or 2.7K240 capture is a real part of the intended use, rather than an unused spec-sheet maximum.

Stuff’s alternatives were the HERO9 Black, HERO8 Black, and DJI Osmo Action. In that dated comparison, the HERO9 was the more sensible choice if GP2 speed was not important, while the HERO8 could suit someone who did not want a full-color front display. Stuff described the DJI Osmo Action as an alternative without 5.3K capture. Those comments reflect the review’s 2021 context; present-day availability, condition, and prices should be checked before comparing used or older models. GoPro’s launch prices were $499.99 MSRP without a subscription and $399.98 with a one-year subscription in September 2021, not current price guidance.
