The base Google Pixel 10 has a brighter display than the Pixel 9, according to Google’s published peak-brightness ratings. It is not a wholesale screen redesign: both phones have a 6.3-inch display and a 60–120 Hz refresh range, while the clearest confirmed change is brightness.
What changed on the Pixel 10 display?
Google announced on August 20, 2025, that the base Pixel 10 has a 6.3-inch Actua display with peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Google describes the screen as brighter; that rating is an increase over the Pixel 9’s stated 2,700-nit peak rating in Tom’s Guide’s comparison. Google’s Pixel 10 announcement is the source for the launch claim.
The Pixel 10’s screen is Actua, while the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL use Super Actua. Google gives the Pro models a peak rating of up to 3,300 nits, so the base Pixel 10 should not be described as matching their brightness. Those are manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee of the brightness a phone will sustain in every situation.
Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 display specifications compared
| Display detail | Pixel 9 | Pixel 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Screen size | 6.3 inches | 6.3 inches |
| Display type | not stated in Tom’s Guide comparison | Actua, per Google’s launch announcement |
| Refresh range | 60–120 Hz | 60–120 Hz |
| Peak brightness rating | Up to 2,700 nits, as reported by Tom’s Guide from manufacturer ratings | Up to 3,000 nits, per Google |
| HDR brightness rating | not stated in the cited comparison | Up to 2,000 nits, per Google Pixel Help |
| Brightness measured by Tom’s Guide | 1,769 nits in its test | 2,333 nits in its test |
Tom’s Guide reports the same screen size and refresh-rate range for both generations. Its light-meter results were 1,769 nits for Pixel 9 and 2,333 nits for Pixel 10. These are that publisher’s test results, not Google’s product ratings; they should be read as a comparison under the reviewer’s test conditions rather than a brightness figure every owner will see. Tom’s Guide’s Pixel 10 versus Pixel 9 comparison includes the ratings and measurements.

Google’s Pixel Help specifications distinguish the base Pixel 10’s up-to-2,000-nit HDR brightness from its up-to-3,000-nit peak brightness. Peak and HDR figures describe different ratings, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. The same specifications list up to 2,200 nits HDR and up to 3,300 nits peak for the Pro models. Google Pixel phone technical specifications provides those figures.
Does the brighter rating mean a better screen in every way?
No. The evidence most clearly supports a brightness improvement. Tom’s Guide found its other color measurements broadly similar between the phones, and its Natural-mode color-accuracy result favored Pixel 9 slightly. Brightness alone therefore does not establish that the Pixel 10 is better on every display measure.

Nor does a peak-nit rating establish how bright a screen remains over time or whether it will feel comfortable to every viewer. Sien Chang, Google’s product manager for Pixel Display, told Android Central that the company aims for image quality that is comfortable to view in any condition, and said its display choices—including PWM frequency—are driven by that broader goal rather than a single factor. That is Google’s stated design rationale, not independent evidence that all users will find the screen comfortable. Android Central’s interview with Google’s Pixel Display product manager has the comments.
What about reports of faster PWM?
Faster PWM support appeared in pre-launch reporting about the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL. Android Authority’s June 25, 2025, report framed its brightness figures as expectations before launch; its PWM detail is not independently confirmed by the sources cited here. Google’s later announcement confirms the base Pixel 10’s 3,000-nit peak rating, but that does not confirm the Pro models’ reported PWM behavior. Treat the PWM claim as an expectation, not a verified Pixel 10 family feature. Android Authority’s pre-launch display report covers those expectations.

Is the display upgrade a reason to move from Pixel 9?
If your main concern is screen visibility, the higher peak-brightness rating and Tom’s Guide’s brighter measured result make the Pixel 10’s display a meaningful change to consider. But the two generations share the same reported size and refresh-rate range, and the available color comparison does not show a universal improvement. The display evidence alone supports choosing the Pixel 10 for a brighter screen—not assuming it is a complete display overhaul or a necessary upgrade for every Pixel 9 owner.
