Google expanded its AI research assistant NotebookLM to Canada in a global rollout announced June 6, 2024. The update also added Google Slides and web pages as sources, citations linking answers to supporting passages, a tool for turning sources into study materials, and the ability to ask about images and diagrams.
What was announced for Canada?
Google said NotebookLM was rolling out to more than 200 countries and territories. A contemporaneous report by MobileSyrup specifically named Canada among the new markets. Google’s June 6, 2024 announcement described the product as powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro.
NotebookLM was designed to work with materials a user supplied: add sources, then ask questions about them. The addition of web URLs meant users could include web pages as source material; it did not mean that the June 2024 announcement described NotebookLM as searching the open web for answers.
What new features did NotebookLM add?
More kinds of sources
Users could add Google Slides presentations and web URLs, alongside Google Docs, PDFs, and text files. That made it possible to bring presentation content and selected web pages into the same source-based workflow.

Citations that lead back to the source
NotebookLM responses included inline citations linking to supporting passages in the user’s sources. Google wrote: “Inline citations now take you directly to supporting passages in your sources, so you can easily fact-check the AI response or dive deeper in the original text.” The citations help readers inspect the material behind an answer; they do not guarantee that the generated answer is correct.
Notebook guide for study and briefing formats
Notebook guide could reshape supplied source material into FAQs, briefing documents, or study guides. These are alternate ways to review or share information already in the notebook, rather than evidence that the tool independently verified the material.

Questions about images, charts, and diagrams
Google also said users could ask questions about images, charts, and diagrams within their sources. NotebookLM could cite relevant images when useful, extending source-based questions beyond text.
What is NotebookLM called now?
The June 2024 announcement used the name NotebookLM. Google’s current Canadian Workspace page uses Gemini Notebook, describing it as an AI research and thinking assistant. This is a current branding change; it is not the name used in the original Canada expansion announcement.

How does the current Workspace offering differ from the 2024 announcement?
Google’s current Canadian product page lists Docs, Slides, PDFs, text and Markdown files, web URLs, copied text, public YouTube video URLs, and audio files as supported sources. It states a limit of 500,000 words per source or 200 MB for uploaded files. Those details describe the current page, not the feature set announced in June 2024.
The same page presents Gemini Notebook as included in Workspace plans and gives business examples such as summarizing reports, comparing research, onboarding, and sales preparation. Google says uploaded data is not used to train models and sources remain private unless a user chooses to share a notebook. Those are Google’s stated product and data-handling terms, not an independent privacy audit.

The central distinction is that NotebookLM works from material brought into a notebook. It can be useful when you want to question a defined set of documents, slides, or other supported sources and then check cited passages, or convert those sources into study or briefing formats. Before relying on it for a particular task, consider:
