That was a dated rollout, not evidence that Gemini 2.0 Flash is the app’s current default: Google’s currently indexed Gemini Apps Help page lists Gemini 3 models.
What Google announced about Gemini 2.0 Flash
On January 30, 2025, Google said the Gemini app was using Gemini 2.0 Flash and rolling the update out on web and mobile, including to enterprise accounts. The announcement came from Patrick Kane, Director of Product Management for the Gemini app: “The Gemini app is now using Gemini 2.0 Flash.” Google’s January 30 announcement presented the change as an app update intended to bring faster responses and stronger performance.
Google DeepMind followed on February 5, 2025, saying the updated Flash had become available to all Gemini app users on desktop and mobile the prior week. That update also distinguished app access from developer access: Gemini 2.0 Flash was generally available through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI. Google DeepMind’s February update described a one-million-token context window for the Gemini 2.0 Flash family for developer use.
Was Gemini 2.0 Flash actually faster?
Google made a specific speed comparison, but it should be read as a company-reported model benchmark claim—not as a measured promise about every person’s app response time. In its December 11, 2024 launch announcement, Google DeepMind said Gemini 2.0 Flash “even outperforms 1.5 Pro on key benchmarks, at twice the speed.” The qualification matters: the claim compares performance on key benchmarks, and does not establish that every Gemini app task loads or answers twice as quickly. Google DeepMind’s Gemini 2.0 launch post is the source for that comparison.

What the rollout meant for Gemini app users
The January announcement tied the change to the app experience across web and mobile. It also highlighted a file-upload capability for Gemini Advanced: Google said subscribers could upload files up to 1,500 pages in connection with the plan’s one-million-token context window. That figure belongs to the January 2025 announcement and its Gemini Advanced context; it should not be treated as a current plan limit. Plan features and usage limits can change.

Developer access was a separate part of the February update. Google said Gemini 2.0 Flash was generally available through the Gemini API in AI Studio and Vertex AI, and its one-million-token context-window figure was specified for developer use. These statements describe different access paths and should not be conflated into a claim that every app user received identical limits.

The January 2025 announcement documents what Google was rolling out then; it does not establish today’s default.
