A Google TV Streamer update appears to include code for backlight settings on compatible remotes, but that does not mean Google has rolled out a setting—or that your current remote can light up. The February 18, 2025 report described possible “Never,” “Standard,” and “Scheduled” modes. Whether any of them apply to you depends on the physical remote and your exact TV or streamer model.
What the Google TV update appears to hint at
On February 18, 2025, 9to5Google reported code strings in a Google TV Streamer update referring to backlight behavior on supported remotes. The report described three possible modes:
- Never: keep the backlight off.
- Standard: briefly illuminate the buttons after a button press.
- Scheduled: operate during a reported 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. window.
These are modes described in the report, not confirmed Google specifications. Code suggesting a feature is not proof that Google has released it, that it appears in your settings, or that a particular remote supports it.
Will your Google TV remote light up?
Only if the remote has backlighting hardware and is supported by the device and software. An update can enable or control features in compatible hardware; it cannot add LEDs to a remote that was built without them. Google TV runs on products from different manufacturers, so remote features vary by model.

Sony, for example, documents a motion-sensitive backlit remote for specific compatible TV models: its buttons light when the remote is picked up. Sony advises checking its model compatibility chart before relying on the backlight or Find Remote features. This is a model-specific example, not evidence that every Google TV remote has illuminated buttons.
How to tell a status light from backlit buttons
A small LED on a remote is not the same as illuminated button labels. Google’s guide to Google TV remote LED patterns explains indicator behavior associated with functions such as pairing, the microphone, reset, and Find My Remote. Those status signals do not establish that the buttons themselves are backlit.

What to check before changing remotes or settings
- Identify the exact device and remote model. Check the TV or streamer model and the model number printed on or listed for the remote. Do not assume compatibility from “Google TV” alone.
- Look for an actual backlight setting. If the remote has illuminated buttons, check the device’s remote settings for available behavior. The reported modes are not proof that a setting has shipped to your device.
- Check official model support. For Sony, use its compatibility chart. For a replacement, verify that the exact remote works with your TV or streamer and retains the power, volume, and voice functions you need.
- Consider activation and battery trade-offs. Backlights may activate through motion or a button press; whether they can be disabled or scheduled depends on the particular remote and its supported software. The cited information does not establish one universal behavior or battery impact.
Remote updates are not the same as backlight support
For the Philips TV models covered by its support article, remote updates can be checked in Google TV under Settings > Remote & Accessories. Select the remote and install an update if one is offered. Philips limits these steps to the named models in its remote update instructions. An available firmware update does not, by itself, confirm that the remote has backlighting or that backlight controls are supported.
Google says firmware updates are staged, and its Google TV Streamer firmware notes list production firmware once it is available to all devices. The page was last updated June 23, 2026; its retrieved information did not announce the reported backlight feature. That does not establish whether the feature is absent from every device, but it is not official confirmation of a rollout.

Use your phone as a control fallback
If you cannot see or use the physical remote comfortably, Google’s Android TV Remote Service listing describes phone and tablet control for Android TV, including navigation and text entry. It provides another way to control the device; it does not illuminate physical remote buttons.
