The finder cannot locate an unpaired remote. If the remote itself will not connect, check its battery light, restart the streaming device, then reset and pair the remote again using the steps for its model. In the meantime, use Google Home or the Google TV app as a phone remote.
Check your device and use the right way to start the finder
Find My Remote is documented for the Google TV Streamer (4K), Chromecast with Google TV, and their compatible Google Voice Remotes. It is not a general finder for every television running Google TV or every third-party remote. Google says the Voice Remote must already be paired to its streaming device for Find My Remote to work. Google’s Find My Remote instructions describe different ways to trigger the sound depending on the device.
- Google TV Streamer (4K): Briefly press the button on the back of the Streamer. The paired remote should play a sound for 30 seconds, and the TV should display “Playing sound for 30 sec.” You can also use a supported voice assistant, Google Home, or TV settings when you have alternate or virtual control.
- Chromecast with Google TV: Use a supported voice assistant or the Google Home app to start the finder. Do not expect the Google TV Streamer’s rear-button method to work on Chromecast.
If the finder does not start, check pairing next; a failed chime alone does not establish that the remote is broken.
Confirm the remote is paired
During Google TV Streamer setup, most remotes pair automatically. If the screen prompts you to start pairing, hold the remote’s Back and Home buttons until its light pulses, then follow the on-screen instructions. See Google’s Google TV Streamer setup steps.

If the remote was previously paired but is no longer responding, use a phone remote to open the device’s remote settings, remove the old remote, and pair it again after restarting the streamer. The reset procedure depends on the remote model, so identify it before proceeding.
Check the batteries and remote LED
Remove both batteries, then reinsert them and watch the LED. Google’s troubleshooting guide uses the light’s response to help diagnose the remote: if it does not flash twice, reseat the batteries as instructed and try the original batteries or two fresh 1.5-volt AAA batteries. Replace both cells together rather than mixing old and new batteries. Follow the model-specific guidance in Google’s Voice Remote troubleshooting guide.

Restart, reset, and pair the remote again
- Restart the streaming device. If you cannot navigate with the physical remote, use the phone remote described below. Google recommends rebooting the device before continuing with remote troubleshooting.
- Unpair the remote. On the TV, open Settings > Remotes & Accessories, select the remote, and choose the option to forget or unpair it. The exact wording can vary by device.
- Reset the remote using its own procedure:
- Google TV Streamer Voice Remote: Hold Mute and Center/Select until the LED becomes solid white.
- Chromecast Voice Remote: Remove the batteries, hold Home while reinserting them, and release Home when the LED pulses.
- Pair it again. Follow the pairing prompt on the TV. If Chromecast with Google TV stops scanning before it finds the remote, Google says a reboot is needed before the device scans again; see Google’s Chromecast pairing error guidance.
A remote factory reset clears its settings and cannot be undone. Try battery checks and a device restart first; reset only after confirming the remote model and following Google’s instructions.
Use your phone while the physical remote is unavailable
The Google Home app or Google TV app can provide a virtual remote for a compatible device. For the Google TV virtual remote, make sure the phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If the virtual remote still will not connect, Google recommends restarting the TV by disconnecting its power for 10 seconds. Follow Google’s phone-as-remote instructions or its Google TV virtual remote troubleshooting steps.

If the remote works but responds slowly
Slow response is different from a failed pairing or finder. Google suggests moving closer to the streamer, moving the Wi-Fi access point farther from it, or using an HDMI extension cable to move the streamer away from other HDMI cables. These are placement checks for a slow remote, not guaranteed fixes for a remote that will not pair. See Google’s remote troubleshooting guidance.

If battery checks, restarting, and model-specific reset and pairing steps do not restore operation, confirm the exact streamer and remote generation before buying a replacement. Google documents replacement Voice Remotes for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer and recommends the remote included with the device for the best experience.
