Google’s Nevada geothermal project is operating: Fervo Energy’s Project Red began contributing carbon-free electricity to the local grid serving Google’s Nevada data centers in November 2023. Fervo later reported the pilot generates 3 MW gross. That is separate from a 115 MW power purchase agreement involving Google and NV Energy—and neither figure means an individual data center is powered directly and exclusively by the project.
What Google’s Nevada geothermal project does
Google announced on November 28, 2023, that its geothermal project with Fervo Energy was operational and sending electricity to the local grid serving its Nevada data centers. Google described the arrangement as grid supply, not a dedicated connection that sends Project Red’s output straight to one data center.
The project uses enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). Google says Fervo drilled two horizontal wells and installed fiber-optic cables to monitor flow, temperature, and performance in real time. The companies describe geothermal as a source of consistent power that can complement variable solar and wind generation. These are company descriptions; the cited sources do not provide an independent assessment of this project’s lifecycle emissions or reservoir performance. Google’s project announcement
Project Red’s output and the separate 115 MW agreement
Fervo reported in September 2026 that Project Red has generated 3 MW gross for the Nevada grid since 2023. “Gross” is the reported output figure; it should not be read as net electricity delivered to a specific data center.

There is also a separate 115 MW power purchase agreement that Fervo says it signed with Google and NV Energy in June 2024. Fervo describes it as helping pioneer Nevada’s Clean Transition Tariff. The agreement’s 115 MW capacity is not Project Red’s output, and the sources do not establish that all 115 MW is already being generated or specify delivery milestones. Fervo’s September 2026 announcement reports the pilot’s output; Fervo’s PPA announcement describes the 2024 agreement.
The 396 MW Google-Fervo deal is in Utah, not Nevada
Google’s larger, newer geothermal agreement is for Cape Station in Beaver County, Utah. Announced in September 2026, the 396 MW PPA has a 15-year term, with deliveries planned in four 99 MW tranches beginning in the third quarter of 2028, according to Fervo’s SEC filing. It is a separate project from Nevada’s Project Red.

The filing also describes an option for approximately 600 MW of additional offtake by June 2030. That capacity is not already contracted: the option depends on Google accepting Fervo’s offer and the parties negotiating a definitive agreement. Possible private-system or direct-to-load delivery arrangements are also conditional on engineering feasibility, relevant agency approvals, and commercial terms. Fervo’s announcement and its SEC filing detail the agreement and conditions.
Cape Station has begun commercial operation, but it remains a Utah project
Fervo reported that Cape Station’s first GeoBlock entered commercial operation on September 30, 2026, at 33 MW net. In its October 1 announcement, Fervo said two other Phase I GeoBlocks were still commissioning. This milestone concerns the Utah project and does not change the location or status of Project Red in Nevada. Fervo’s Cape Station update

What the Nevada project does—and does not—show
- Operating: Project Red is contributing electricity to the local Nevada grid, according to Google and Fervo.
- Reported pilot output: Fervo’s September 2026 figure is 3 MW gross.
- Separate procurement: The 115 MW Nevada-related PPA is not the pilot’s output, and its cited announcement does not establish that the full capacity is already online.
- Different state: The 396 MW PPA and the first commercial GeoBlock are associated with Cape Station in Utah.
- Not independently quantified here: The cited company announcements do not establish Project Red’s lifecycle emissions, impact on local electricity rates, or Nevada-specific generation economics.
Fervo also said in September 2026 that it received a Department of Energy award for appraisal of a geothermal prospect in Humboldt County, Nevada. That appraisal is distinct from Project Red and does not represent an expansion already producing power. Fervo’s award announcement
