For a server or reload error, Google recommends waiting five minutes and reloading. Before any reload or browser reset, copy recent unsaved edits somewhere safe.
Start by identifying what is not loading
Use the symptom to choose the next step rather than repeating the same reload. Check whether other spreadsheets open and whether the problem changes in another browser or on another device. If you have edits that may not have saved, protect them before troubleshooting.
- Sheets shows a server or reload error: follow the reload-error steps below.
- Sheets works in another browser but not your usual one: focus on extensions and browser data.
- The problem appears during offline use or sync: check offline setup and sync status.
- Only one spreadsheet fails: use the file-specific recovery options.
- A green progress bar is visible: it may indicate normal loading or calculations, not a frozen app.
Fix a server or reload error
- Wait five minutes, then reload. Google recommends this for the editor errors covered in its troubleshooting guidance.
- Test a private browsing window. If Sheets opens there, an extension or the regular browser’s saved state may be involved. Private browsing is only a diagnostic here; Google’s desktop offline feature does not work in private browsing.
- Disable extensions one at a time in your usual browser, testing Sheets after each change. This can help identify an extension that interferes with the editor.
- Clear browser data if needed. You may need to sign in again afterward, so make sure you can access your account before doing this.
These checks are troubleshooting options, not a guarantee that one particular step will resolve the error.
Check the browser, connection, and device
- Confirm that your internet connection is working; if possible, test a more reliable network.
- Update your browser and try Sheets in another browser or on another device.
- Make sure cookies and JavaScript are enabled. Google recommends using one of the two most recent browser versions for the best experience; older browsers or computers may not meet its requirements. See Google’s browser and system requirements.
If Sheets fails across browsers and devices, the problem is less likely to be limited to one browser’s extensions or saved data. These checks can narrow the cause but do not establish that a particular service outage is occurring.

Fix offline access or sync problems
Google’s desktop offline setup requires Chrome or Edge, the Google Docs Offline extension, a non-private browsing window, and available device storage. On a work or school account, an administrator may disable offline access; if the setting is unavailable, ask the administrator.
- Confirm that you are using Chrome or Edge, not a private window, and that the Docs Offline extension is installed.
- Check that the device has free storage.
- If Sheets remains stuck checking offline sync status, reload the page. If the problem continues, clear site data for
docs.google.com.
Clearing site data can remove locally stored site information, so treat it as a targeted sync troubleshooting step rather than the first thing to try. Google’s offline access and sync guidance covers setup and troubleshooting.

Recover a spreadsheet that fails by itself
If other spreadsheets open but one does not, use Google’s file-specific recovery options. Google notes that an oversized Sheets file may become read-only. Suggested recovery options include copying individual tabs into a new spreadsheet or downloading and copying the data.
If a copied file also fails, Google’s guidance describes using IMPORTRANGE with the original spreadsheet’s URL and the tab name. These approaches are recovery options, not guaranteed fixes; keep the original file intact while trying them.

Protect edits when Sheets cannot save
If the message says “Can’t save your changes,” copy recent unsaved edits before reloading. Google’s save-error guidance also recommends disconnecting and reconnecting if the message returns. Offline mode can keep work locally and upload changes after a stable connection returns, provided offline access is set up.
When a loading bar is normal
A green progress bar may appear while a spreadsheet loads, formulas calculate, collaborators edit, or background scripts run. Google says it is a progress indicator and that users can continue editing; its guidance states, “The progress bar is only a visual representation that the application is working and updating, you don’t need to await its completion.” A bar by itself is not proof that Sheets has frozen.
