Google Sheets can suggest an alternative when it detects that a formula may be improved. A suggestion box explains the proposed change, and you can accept or reject it. The feature can help with issues such as a VLOOKUP formula error, an incomplete range, or a range reference that should stay fixed when you copy a formula—but it does not catch every problem or guarantee that a change matches your intended calculation.

How formula corrections work

When Sheets detects a formula that may be improved, it can display a suggestion box with an alternative formula and details about the proposed change. You decide whether to use it; accepting a suggestion replaces the current formula, while rejecting it leaves your formula in place. Google announced the feature as “Intelligent corrections for formulas in Google Sheets” on April 14, 2022. Google’s announcement describes the suggestions as alternatives, not automatic edits.

Examples of issues it may flag

  • VLOOKUP errors: Sheets may suggest a correction for a formula using VLOOKUP.
  • Missing cells in a range: It may identify a range input that leaves out cells.
  • References that should be locked: When applying or copying a formula across cells, it may suggest locking a range so the reference does not shift.

These are examples Google named, not a complete list of everything the feature can detect.

How to accept or turn off a suggestion

  1. When a suggestion box appears, read the explanation and inspect the proposed formula.
  2. Accept the suggestion to replace the existing formula, or reject it to keep the original.
  3. To disable formula corrections, go to Tools > Enable formula corrections and turn the setting off. Google also described an option in the suggestion dialog’s three-dot menu.

The menu labels and availability reflect Google’s April 2022 announcement; interface details may have changed since then. At that time, Google said formula corrections were on by default and that administrators had no control over the setting. The announcement listed Workspace customers, legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers, and personal Google Account users. Check Google’s announcement for the original rollout details.

Check the formula before using it

A suggestion is worth reviewing, not blindly accepting. Confirm that the revised formula uses the intended cells, ranges, and references, then compare its result with what the calculation should produce. Google’s announcements do not provide an accuracy rate or promise that a suggested change preserves your intended logic.

Formula corrections are different from other Sheets features

Inline formula suggestions

Formula suggestions are an earlier, separate feature: they appear inline as you start typing a formula and offer sequential, context-aware suggestions for formulas and functions. They help while composing a formula; intelligent corrections instead offer an alternative when Sheets detects that a formula you inserted may be improved. Google introduced formula and function suggestions in 2021.

Gemini’s formula troubleshooting

Gemini in Sheets offers another, distinct way to investigate a formula error. In a June 2026 announcement, Google said Gemini can analyze the surrounding data structure, explain a likely issue, and provide a corrected formula when an error occurs. The capability is available by default if Gemini for Workspace in Sheets is enabled; the announcement does not establish a current plan-by-plan eligibility list. Read Google’s June 2026 announcement.

Google’s September 2025 announcement also described Gemini features for generating and explaining formulas, explaining errors and correcting them, and offering multiple formula options. See the September 2025 announcement. These Gemini tools are not the same as the formula-correction suggestion box, and using them depends on Gemini being available and enabled for your account.
