Google said it bought Fitbit to strengthen its wearables business by combining Fitbit’s devices and health expertise with Google’s software, AI, and hardware. Its 2026 move to bring Fitbit users into Google Health—and introduce a screenless Fitbit tracker designed around a digital health coach—shows a clearer shape for that ambition: a connected health platform built around wearable devices. That is evidence of Google’s current direction, not proof of its private motives or that the acquisition has achieved every goal.
Why did Google buy Fitbit?
When Google announced the deal on November 1, 2019, it said the acquisition would let it invest more in Wear OS and bring Made by Google wearables to market. Google described Fitbit as a pioneer with a portfolio of products, experiences, and a user community. Its stated plan was to combine that expertise with Google’s AI, software, and hardware to spur innovation in wearables. Google’s announcement was a public rationale for a proposed deal, not independent confirmation of all the company’s internal motivations.
The companies completed the acquisition on January 14, 2021. Google then said it would work with Fitbit on their respective smartwatch and fitness-tracker platforms, connecting Fitbit’s established products with Google’s Wear OS and Google Fit activity. At the time, Google cited more than 29 million active Fitbit users; that was a historical figure in its completion announcement, not a current user count. Google’s closing announcement also framed the deal as “about devices, not data.”
What has changed in Google’s approach?
Google’s May 7, 2026 announcement points to a more integrated product strategy than simply adding Fitbit-branded hardware to its lineup. The Fitbit app is becoming the Google Health app, a hub Google says can bring together data from wearables, Health Connect, Apple Health, and medical records. Google also introduced Health Coach, a personalized health and fitness guide, and Fitbit Air, a screenless tracker designed with the Coach in mind. The announced direction links a wearable, health data, and software guidance in one experience. Google’s product announcement describes the plan; it does not by itself establish how well the products work or whether users will adopt them.

Fitbit users are moving to Google Health
Google’s Help Center says the app transition began May 19, 2026. Existing Fitbit users are being upgraded, while migration from Google Fit was planned to begin later in 2026. The timing and availability may change; consult the Google Health redesign help page for current details.
The integration changes what Fitbit users get
The new app is not simply the old Fitbit app with a new name. Google’s transition documentation lists Groups and Community Feed and badges among the features removed, alongside changes to some legacy health and sleep features. It also documents continuing connections to Health Connect, Apple Health, and other third-party apps. Some device-specific tools remain: for example, Charge 6 and Sense devices retain Scan Quick Reset. Because feature availability can change, check Google’s feature and transition documentation for the latest device-specific details.

What does the Fitbit deal mean for health data and competition?
The acquisition was subject to competition concerns, not just a product strategy. On December 17, 2020, the European Commission conditionally approved the deal under the EU Merger Regulation. Its concerns included the possibility that Fitbit data could strengthen Google’s position in advertising, that Google might restrict competitors’ access to the Fitbit Web API, and that Google could weaken rival wearable makers’ interoperability with Android. The Commission said approval depended on Google complying with commitments. Its decision addressed competition issues; it was not a finding that every privacy concern was resolved. The Commission’s announcement explains its reasoning and the conditions.
Google said at the 2019 announcement that “Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads.” When the acquisition closed in 2021, Google described binding commitments that Fitbit health and wellness data would not be used for Google ads and would be separated from other Google advertising data. Google also said it would maintain Android APIs for interoperability with competing devices and connections to third-party services. Those statements should be read as specific commitments about data use and access—not as a blanket description of every kind of data handling. The Commission’s approval notice sets out the competition context.

What is happening to Fitbit’s developer platform?
Google describes the Google Health API as the next generation of the Fitbit Web API. Its developer page says the legacy API would stop receiving bug fixes and support after September 30, 2026, and was scheduled to be turned off on October 30, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that shutdown was still a future scheduled event. The same page said Google was not onboarding new projects to the Google Health API at the time it was accessed, so developers should confirm the latest status before planning a migration. See Google’s developer documentation for current timelines and access information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Google’s current direction prove the Fitbit acquisition worked?
No. The announcements show a through-line from the original goal of combining wearable expertise with Google’s software and hardware to a present-day plan centered on a health app, coach, and wearable. They do not reveal Google’s full internal decision-making, establish the deal’s financial or strategic success, or prove that the new experience will satisfy Fitbit users. The feature changes documented during the app transition also show that integration has involved trade-offs, not just continuity.
