Large aggregators should classify pages by what they offer, use structured data that matches the visible content, and monitor the appropriate Search Console report. Markup can make a page eligible for a search enhancement; it does not guarantee that Google will display one.
How Google treats product aggregator pages
Google distinguishes product information from a merchant’s own product offer. Product snippets can apply to broader product-information pages, including pages that aggregate information from multiple sites. Merchant listings are for product pages where shoppers can purchase from the site itself; linking out to another seller does not meet that requirement.
That distinction matters for large catalogs: a comparison or review page should not be marked up as though its publisher were selling the product. Google’s Product structured data guidance covers product data more broadly, while its merchant listing guidance explains the requirements for sale pages.
Choose the right treatment for each page type
| Page type | What the page does | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Aggregator, comparison, or review page | Provides product information, reviews, or data gathered from multiple sites; checkout happens elsewhere or is not offered. | Represent the information actually present and assess eligibility for product snippets. Do not claim merchant listing eligibility just because the page links to sellers. |
| Merchant product page | Lets shoppers purchase the product from that site. | Follow merchant listing guidance and provide accurate offer details. Google’s merchant listing features require an Offer because the merchant must be the seller. |
| Product or variant family | Describes one product with distinct options or variants. | Model the parent product and its variants coherently, using Google’s variant properties where appropriate. |
| Category or collection page | Lists multiple products rather than describing one product or its variants. | Do not represent the entire category as a single product. Google’s merchant listing guidance recommends product pages rather than product-listing or category pages for product rich results. |
For an overview of how Google handles product data, including the use of page markup, Merchant Center feeds, or both, see its Product structured data documentation. Markup and feeds can help Google understand and verify product information, but the information should agree with what users can see on the page.

Use the Search Console report that matches the page
Google’s Product snippets report is relevant to pages that share product review information or aggregate product data from multiple sites. Its Merchant listings report is for pages selling products. A site with both kinds of templates should monitor each report for its corresponding pages, rather than treating the reports as interchangeable. Google introduced this distinction in its announcement of the Merchant listings and Product snippets reports.
Represent product variants as a family
When options are genuinely variants of the same product, Google documents a parent-child model using ProductGroup, hasVariant, variesBy, and productGroupID. The model helps distinguish a product family from its individual purchasable or selectable versions. Variant-defining attributes and identifiers should be consistent between the page and structured data; do not group different products merely because they are similar.

Roll out product data across a large catalog
- Classify page templates. Separate pages where users can buy from the site from pages that compare, review, or aggregate products. Also identify single-product, variant-family, and category templates; those distinctions determine which guidance and report apply.
- Map URLs and discovery paths. Keep product and variant URLs stable and reachable through crawlable navigation. Review URL design, pagination, and incremental loading against Google’s ecommerce SEO best practices, which cover how site structure affects crawling and Google’s understanding of an ecommerce site.
- Match data to the page. Choose structured data and, where used, feed data that reflect the page’s actual product information and visible content. Apply variant grouping only when the products are real variants, and avoid treating a broad category listing as a single product.
- Validate on a limited set first. Google recommends using the Rich Results Test, deploying changes on a small group of pages, and using URL Inspection to check how Google sees them. Expand only after the template and data behave as intended.
- Monitor after changes. Check the Product snippets and Merchant listings reports for the page sets they cover, and watch for issues after launches or template revisions. Google’s structured data testing guidance recommends comparing performance before and after changes over several months on stable pages; that is a measurement approach, not a promised ranking or traffic gain.
What structured data can—and cannot—do
Structured data is one input, not a display switch. Google can use product data from page markup, Merchant Center feeds, or both, and says combining markup and feeds can help it understand and verify information. Even valid markup only establishes eligibility: whether a search enhancement appears is at Google’s discretion and can change over time. Do not promise a rich result, ranking improvement, or traffic increase based on markup alone.
