Search Engine Roundtable reported the documentation change on October 6, 2026. The notice adds visibility. It does not change the control itself, and it does not change how Google ranks pages.
What changed in the documentation
The new line, as Search Engine Roundtable reproduced it from Google’s Help page, reads: “Owners of the top-level domain property will see a notification on the Search generative AI control page when one of their child properties overrides the parent setting.” This is official documentation wording, not a quote from a named person.
The date and description of the added sentence come from Search Engine Roundtable’s report. Google’s Help page for the Search generative AI control is the authority for how the control and property inheritance work.
In practice, the notice tells a top-level owner that a different setting exists somewhere below them. Before, that kind of difference was easy to miss.

What the Search generative AI control does
- Scope: it manages whether your site’s links and content can appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Google Discover.
- Default: inclusion.
- Exclusion: content is not visible in those features, either as links or as grounding for generated responses.
- What it is not: it does not remove a site from Google Search. For that, Google’s help page points to
noindex.
Google’s June 3, 2026 announcement says the control will not be used as a ranking signal for search results outside these generative AI Search features. That describes the control’s intended scope, and it is a statement from Google rather than something independently verified.
How inheritance works between properties
Whether a Search Console property is a parent or a child depends on where it sits in the site and property hierarchy. According to Google’s Help page:

- A property normally inherits its setting from the closest parent that has been manually configured to stop inheriting.
- If no parent has done that, it inherits from the top-level domain property.
- An owner of a child property can set the control manually for that property and its subpages.
That last point is what the new notice surfaces. A top-level setting is a default, not a guarantee. An intervening parent or a manually configured child can differ from it.
What to do when you see the notification
- Open the top-level domain property in Search Console.
- Go to its Search generative AI control page and read the notice.
- Identify the child property with a different setting.
- Open that child’s own control page and check whether its setting is manual.
- Ask the child’s owner why it was set that way, then decide whether to leave it or align the settings.
Don’t assume every URL-prefix property follows the top-level setting directly. Intervening parents and manual configurations can change what applies.

Timing and availability
Google’s Help documentation says the control had rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. Google first announced it, along with related performance insights, on June 3, 2026.
Changes are not instant. Google says exclusion should take effect within one to two days after the change goes live. Some content may take longer because of caching and propagation across Google’s systems. Plan for a delay when you check results.
For context, Google’s announcement cited more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode. Those are Google’s own 2026 figures. They show scale only and say nothing about the effect of this control or the new notice.

Does the notification change any setting?
No. It only informs the top-level owner. Any change still has to be made on the relevant property’s control page.
