Google’s Gemini 3 upgrade brought deeper reasoning and interactive, question-specific layouts to Search AI Mode when it launched on November 18, 2025. It is no longer the default model: Google announced on May 19, 2026, that Gemini 3.5 Flash had become AI Mode’s global default. Gemini 3 Pro may still be selectable for eligible accounts, but model options, limits and availability vary.
What Gemini 3 changed in AI Mode
Google described Gemini 3 as improving AI Mode’s ability to break a question into related subtopics, search across multiple sources in parallel and combine findings into an answer with links to web pages. This “query fan-out” approach is intended to handle questions that need several searches rather than a single direct lookup. The launch also introduced generative visual experiences tailored to a query: layouts, images, tables, grids, interactive tools and simulations. Google’s examples included a three-body-problem simulation with adjustable variables and a mortgage calculator for comparing options. Such outputs can make a complex idea easier to explore, but they remain generated responses and should not be treated as verified calculations or advice without checking the underlying information.
Elizabeth Reid, Google’s VP and Head of Search, said the model’s reasoning “grasps depth and nuance” and enables “dynamic visual layouts, interactive tools and simulations tailored specifically to your query.” That is Google’s promotional description of the launch.

Gemini 3 is the launch story, not today’s default
At Google I/O on May 19, 2026, Google said Gemini 3.5 Flash had become the default model in AI Mode globally. That changes how to read the 2025 upgrade: Gemini 3 marked a substantial step in Search’s reasoning and interface, but users should not assume their current AI Mode answers are routed to Gemini 3. Google Help still describes Gemini 3 Pro as a selectable option for eligible personal accounts; a selectable model is different from the default model. The I/O announcement also described a redesigned Search box that can expand for longer questions, suggest wording based on intent and accept text, images, files, videos or Chrome tabs. Google said users could continue a conversation from an AI Overview into AI Mode with context retained, and announced information agents, expanded agentic booking, shopping capabilities and agentic coding in Search. These are announcements, not evidence that every function is already available to every account or market.

How to open AI Mode and ask a question
Google Help lists these access routes on Android:
- Go to google.com/ai.
- Run a Search query and select AI Mode.
- Open AI Mode in the Google app.
AI Mode supports text, voice, images and files, and Google Help also documents asking about a pasted webpage URL. After the first response, ask a follow-up to refine the answer; AI Mode can use context from earlier questions in the conversation. The available inputs and interface can vary by device and account. What you can use it for—and what to verify
AI Mode is most useful when the question is exploratory or has several parts: comparing products, working through a how-to, planning a trip, or asking a follow-up that would otherwise require multiple searches. Google’s May 2025 explainer said early testers’ AI Mode queries were twice as long as traditional Search queries. That figure describes early testing, not today’s general user base. For visual help, Google says users can ask for an interactive visual, calculator or simulation, then refine it through follow-up questions. Treat the result as a way to explore an idea, not as a substitute for checking important numbers, safety guidance or decisions against authoritative sources.

At the November 2025 launch, Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode was initially available in the United States to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers through the “Thinking” option. Google said it planned to extend Gemini 3 in AI Mode to everyone in the U.S., with higher limits for Pro and Ultra subscribers. On December 1, 2025, Google announced an expansion to nearly 120 countries and territories in English for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, under the option “Thinking with 3 Pro.” That was a rollout milestone, not a definitive current country list. Current Google Help lists Gemini 3 Pro as an option for signed-in personal accounts subject to country and plan eligibility. AI plans may not be available for all regions or account types, and Gemini 3 Pro has daily usage limits that can change with demand, capacity and subscription tier. Google also reports that AI Mode had more than one billion monthly users one year after debut and that its queries had more than doubled every quarter since launch. Personalization and connected apps
Google Help describes personalization and connections to Google content apps as opt-in features. Users can disconnect apps and manage history using the controls provided in their account.
