Google says Chrome scored 61 in Speedometer 3.1 and 469 in JetStream 3, calling the results dual records across browsers. Both scores came from one disclosed setup: a MacBook Pro with M5 running macOS 26.0.1. They are notable benchmark results, not a guarantee that Chrome will feel faster on every computer or website.
What is Speedometer 3.1?
Speedometer measures how responsive a browser is when running application-like web workloads. Rather than timing only a simple page load, its tests exercise a chain of browser work: JavaScript and JSON, HTML parsing, DOM changes, text shaping, CSS and layout, and rendering pixels. Google’s [June 4, 2026 announcement](https://blog.chromium.org/2026/06/a-double-victory-for-web-speed.html) describes Chrome’s benchmark coverage across these kinds of tasks.
Speedometer 3 was built collaboratively by teams associated with major browser engines. Its workload mix includes todo applications built with different frameworks, as well as news browsing, charting, and text editing. The developers say the aim was to better reflect changing web applications, while recognizing that a finite set of tests cannot simulate the entire web. Google explains that design rationale in its March 11, 2024 account.
WebKit’s technical explanation of Speedometer 3.0 says the test harness schedules work around requestAnimationFrame callbacks to better capture rendering updates that earlier timing approaches could miss. It also describes a score based on the reciprocal of the geometric mean of workload totals. That explanation concerns version 3.0 and should not be read as documentation of every detail in later 3.1 revisions.

How high were Chrome’s scores, and what changed?
Google’s June 4, 2026 post reports a Speedometer 3.1 score of 61 and a JetStream 3 score of 469, both measured on the MacBook Pro with M5 and macOS 26.0.1. Google calls them dual records across browsers. The post does not provide a contemporaneous table of rival-browser results, so the record claim here is Google’s characterization, not an independent comparison across competing browsers.
| Benchmark figure | Google-reported result | Comparison and test context |
|---|---|---|
| Speedometer 3.1 | 61 | Google calls it a dual record across browsers; measured on a MacBook Pro with M5 running macOS 26.0.1. Google says it was 5% higher than its benchmark-performance post about a year earlier. |
| JetStream 3 | 469 | Measured on the same disclosed setup; Google reports a 10% improvement since the start of 2026. |
The time periods matter. The 5% Speedometer increase is Google’s comparison with its previous benchmark-performance post about a year earlier. A separate Google post from June 2025 reported a 22% Speedometer 3.1 improvement since August 2024; it was corrected on June 10, 2025 after an earlier version had mislabeled the benchmark as Speedometer 3 and the improvement as 10%. Those are distinct comparisons, not a single cumulative figure. See the corrected 2025 post.

What Google says it optimized in Chrome
Google attributes the gains to work in JavaScript, WebAssembly, and Blink, Chrome’s rendering engine. These are the company’s engineering explanations for benchmark performance, not independent measurements of how much faster a person’s everyday browsing will be.
JavaScript
Google says it added compiler fast paths for common operations, with particular attention to asynchronous work such as microtask dispatch and resolving await. It also cites fast-path inlining for sorting and string comparisons, alongside changes to optimization heuristics and inlining decisions. Chrome Product Manager Thomas Nattestad wrote on June 4, 2026 that the largest impact came from inlining async operations and applying similar techniques to sorting and string comparison.

WebAssembly
The company describes changes to internal data structures, SIMD code generation, register allocation, reuse of compiler temporary memory, and the overhead of calls between JavaScript and WebAssembly. Google says some of this work also benefits AI, cryptography, and interpreter workloads; the announcement does not quantify those effects for individual users.
Blink rendering
Google also cites caching for style resolution and DOM lookups, faster attribute handling, broader caching of data URIs, and SIMD-assisted string copying and HTML parsing. These changes target work included in browser rendering and application-like workloads.

Does the record mean Chrome is faster on your computer?
Not necessarily. A benchmark result depends on the hardware, operating system, browser build, and test conditions. Google disclosed one Mac configuration, not a range of Windows, Linux, Android, or other Mac results. A high Speedometer score is evidence about responsiveness in that benchmark’s workload mix; it does not establish that every site, extension, or browsing pattern will improve by the same amount.
Speedometer’s breadth makes it more relevant than a single narrow operation, but its creators explicitly caution that a limited set of workloads cannot represent the whole web. If you compare browser scores, use the same benchmark version and align hardware, OS, and test conditions. For your own experience, compare the same sites and tasks on the same machine, with the extensions and settings you actually use.
