What the December 2023 report alleged
A reproduced article by Adrianna Nine, published December 26, 2023, attributed the staffing account to reporting by The Information. It said Google was reportedly reorganizing its ad-sales unit as machine-learning tools generated marketing ideas and advertising copy. According to the reproduced account, people familiar with a large-customer sales unit said employees could face consolidation, reassignment, or layoffs. The reproduced December 2023 account does not establish that any specific number of employees was dismissed or directly replaced by AI.
The reproduction also asserted that about 13,500 human staff had historically monitored ad tools and created ads, and that those workers had become redundant. That figure’s definition and time frame are unclear, and it is not verified by the available official statement. It should not be treated as a confirmed count of affected workers.
What Google has confirmed about AI in advertising
In an October 17, 2024 post, Google CEO Sundar Pichai described the company’s advertising product work: “And in Ads, we’ve made real progress with AI-powered ad formats and streamlined campaign management, while continuing to innovate with Performance Max to empower millions of businesses.” Pichai’s statement supports the narrower point that Google was developing AI-powered ad formats and more streamlined campaign management. It does not confirm a reorganization, layoffs, or replacement of sales employees.

Automating ad work is not the same as replacing account relationships
AI features that generate marketing ideas, produce copy, or streamline campaign management concern advertising tasks and workflows. Those capabilities can change what people do, but their existence alone does not show that customer-facing sales roles have been eliminated. The 2023 account concerned a reported reorganization and possible staffing consequences; Google’s public product statement addressed advertising tools. They are different kinds of evidence and should not be conflated.
A Google Careers listing for an AI Sales Specialist describes a role working with customers to identify AI use cases and grow Google Cloud’s AI business. The listing illustrates that Google has advertised at least one human customer-facing AI sales position. One job listing does not show the company’s overall hiring, staffing, or employment trend.

How the report fits broader sales-team use of AI
Apollo’s August 11, 2026 release reported results from a survey it conducted in June 2026 with 328 go-to-market professionals, including customers and non-customers. Apollo said 97% of respondents reported AI adoption, 84% used AI tools for prospecting and research, and 6% of surveyed sales and marketing leaders believed AI would ultimately replace team members. Apollo’s survey release is vendor-published research from a limited sample; it is not a representative measure of all sales workers and says nothing definitive about Google’s staffing decisions.
The results offer one limited illustration of how surveyed teams distinguish using AI to support sales work from expecting it to replace team members. Apollo’s CMO Marcio Arnecke characterized the findings this way: “Instead, we’re seeing organizations use AI to help their teams work smarter and move faster.” That is an executive’s interpretation of Apollo’s survey, not an independent conclusion.
