For most Android users who can get an app from either source, Google Play is the safer default. It combines marketplace policies and app information with Google Play Protect, which checks apps during installation and scans devices. That is a relative advantage, not a guarantee: Play Protect also checks apps installed from elsewhere, and third-party stores differ in how they vet apps and developers.
Why is Google Play the safer default?
Google Play offers multiple safeguards: Google’s marketplace policies, app ratings and reviews, a Data safety section, and device-level scanning through Play Protect. These layers give users more information and protection than an unverified download link, but a Play listing does not prove an app is harmless or that its privacy practices are suitable for you.
Google says: “Google Play Protect checks apps when you install them. It also periodically scans your device.” It can warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps, including apps installed from outside Google Play. Google reported that Play Protect scanned over 350 billion Android apps daily in 2025 and that real-time scanning identified more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play in the prior year. Are third-party Android app stores unsafe?
Not as a single category. “Third-party store” can mean a well-known operator with stated policies and developer controls, or a storefront with little transparency. The available comparative evidence does not support a current universal ranking of all alternative stores.
A 2018 study examined more than 6 million Android apps across 16 Chinese app markets and Google Play. Its authors found a significantly higher prevalence of malware, fake apps, and cloned apps in the Chinese markets they studied. That finding is limited to those marketplaces and that period; it does not establish that every third-party store today is less safe. USENIX Security 2018 study

Is it safe to download apps outside Google Play?
It can be, but the source and installation circumstances matter. Android requires users to opt into installs from outside Google Play or preloaded app stores. The prompt helps prevent accidental installations; it does not certify the app. Google warns that scammers may pressure people to authorize installs through a browser or messaging app. Treat an unexpected request, especially one framed as urgent, as a reason to stop and verify independently. Google reported that in 2024 more than 13 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play were identified by real-time scanning. It also said more than 95 percent of installations from major malware families that exploit sensitive permissions and are highly correlated with financial fraud came from internet-sideloading sources, including browsers, messaging apps, and file managers. Those figures describe the threats and installation sources Google measured; they do not mean that 95 percent of Android malware overall comes from sideloading. How to assess a store and an app
When an app is available from more than one source, evaluate the operator, listing, and installation path rather than relying on the store label alone.
- Store controls: Look for clear app and developer policies, a way to report problems, and evidence the operator responds to reports and removes harmful listings.
- Developer identity: Check whether the publisher matches the developer’s official website or another reliable channel. Be alert for impersonations and repackaged copies.
- App details: Read the app’s stated purpose and privacy information. Consider whether requested permissions make sense for its function.
- Device protection: Keep Google Play Protect enabled and heed Android’s warnings when installing from outside Google Play.
- Download and updates: Prefer a download you deliberately sought from a source you trust. Confirm that future updates will also come through a credible channel.
- Pressure: Do not install an APK or switch off protections because an unsolicited caller, message, or website says you must act immediately.
What Play Protect does—and does not do—for outside apps
Play Protect is not limited to apps obtained from Google Play: Google says it checks apps at installation and periodically scans the device, including apps from other sources. This means choosing another store does not automatically remove this layer, provided Play Protect is enabled. Scanning reduces risk; it cannot establish that an app is safe in every respect, and it does not replace checking who published it or what permissions it requests.
