A 2024 Google Play Store leak showed a headset icon in the “Install on more devices” menu, hinting that Play Store support for mixed-reality devices was in development. It did not prove Google was making its own headset. Google has since announced Android XR, with Samsung Galaxy XR listed as available now and XREAL AURA described as coming this fall.
What did the Google Play Store leak reveal?
A November 7, 2024 report by Chrome Unboxed identified a headset icon in Google Play’s “Install on more devices” menu. The interface suggested Google was preparing Play Store support for headset hardware, but the report said Google had not officially announced a new headset. The icon could have pointed to a Google product or broader support for third-party mixed-reality devices.
So the leak was a software signal, not confirmation of a Google-branded headset. It did not name a product, establish a launch date, or show which devices would be compatible.
What is Android XR?
Android XR is Google’s operating system for extended-reality devices, including headsets and glasses. Google uses “XR” as an umbrella term for virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. The platform brings hardware, Android apps from Google Play, and Gemini-assisted features together.

Google later confirmed that the Play Store was preparing for the platform. In its Android Developers Blog, Google wrote: “The Google Play Store is also getting ready for Android XR.” Google said Android XR would arrive first on Samsung’s Project Moohan, with XREAL’s Project Aura to follow. Supported 2D Android apps would also be listed in the Android XR Play Store.

What can you use Google Play apps for on Android XR?
Google’s April 2026 update reported millions of apps available from Google Play on XR, alongside more than 100 apps made to take advantage of XR immersion. Those figures describe Google’s platform update; they are not a count of apps independently verified for every headset or region.
Google also described features intended to bridge conventional Android apps and XR environments:
Rank #3
- Auto-spatialization: turns many 2D apps, websites, images, and videos into 3D presentations.
- Wall-pinned apps: lets users place apps on virtual walls.
- Visible-hand interaction: makes hands visible during interaction.
- Session restoration: helps restore a prior session.
- Android Enterprise support: provides support for organizational deployment.
These capabilities were announced in Google’s April 2026 Android update; the announcement does not establish that every feature is available on every device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the leak mean Google is making a mixed-reality headset?
No. The 2024 Play Store icon indicated preparation for headset support but did not identify the hardware maker. Google’s later announcements establish Android XR as a platform and identify Samsung Galaxy XR and XREAL AURA as devices in its lineup. They do not turn the original leak into evidence of a Google-made headset.
What to take from the leak today
The icon was an early clue that Google Play was preparing to serve XR devices. The confirmed story is now Android XR: Galaxy XR is listed as available, XREAL AURA is described as a later wired-glasses option, and Google says millions of Play apps are available on XR. The leak itself never established a Google-branded headset.
