Google Play Store code found in October 2024 pointed to an “XR headset” device type, but it did not confirm that a new public Play Store category had launched. Since then, Google has announced Android XR, its platform for headsets and glasses, and identifies Samsung Galaxy XR as an Android XR headset.
What did the Play Store code reveal?
Android Authority reported on October 29, 2024, that it found an icon resembling an XR headset and a text string reading “XR headset” in Google Play Store version 43.3.32-31. The finding came from examining app code; it was evidence of resources in that version, not an announcement from Google or proof that users could see a new category in the Play Store. Android Authority’s teardown described the possibility that the app was preparing to support a new device type.
A follow-up report by Gizmochina on November 3, 2024, suggested the code might point to a dedicated area for XR apps and connected the timing to Google’s work with Samsung and Qualcomm. It also noted that Google’s plans were unclear. “A new device category coming soon” was an interpretation of the clue, not a confirmed Google timeline. Gizmochina’s report summarized that interpretation.
What happened after the hint?
On December 12, 2024, Google announced Android XR, an operating system for headsets and glasses developed with Samsung. Google described the announcement as a developer preview, identified Samsung’s Project Moohan as the first headset, and said it would be available for purchase the following year. Shahram Izadi, Google’s VP and GM of XR, wrote: “Today, we’re introducing Android XR, a new operating system built for this next generation of computing.” Google’s announcement confirmed the broader platform direction, but did not verify that the specific Play Store category UI from the code report shipped.

Which Android XR devices does Google identify?
Google’s Android XR product page currently identifies Samsung Galaxy XR as a headset powered by Android XR. It also presents XREAL AURA as Android XR glasses. These are related device forms, but glasses are not the same form factor as the “XR headset” named in the Play Store string. Google’s Android XR page describes both examples.
- Samsung Galaxy XR: an Android XR headset.
- XREAL AURA: Android XR glasses, a distinct form factor.
Does this mean a new Play Store category is available?
That remains unestablished. The 2024 teardown documented an icon and string inside a particular app version; Google’s subsequent Android XR announcement and current device page establish the platform and product examples, not whether a separate, public-facing Play Store category matching that code was released. The evidence supports the idea that Play Store was preparing for XR headset support, but not a claim that the category is live or that Google formally announced it.
