The Google Pixel Tablet is a capable Wi-Fi Android tablet that can double as a smart-home display—but only when it is locked onto the separately sold Charging Speaker Dock. Docked, it offers a photo frame, Google Home controls, Cast and hands-free Assistant; undocked, it works as a regular tablet. That two-in-one arrangement is useful if you want a screen you can pick up and carry around, but Hub Mode lacks some Nest Hub Max features and the tablet’s cameras do not provide Nest-style home monitoring.
How the Pixel Tablet works as a smart-home hub
Google says the tablet enters Hub Mode automatically when it is locked and attached to a Charging Speaker Dock. The dock is essential to the hub function and is the only docking option Google lists; it is not a standalone smart speaker. If you want the tablet to live on a kitchen counter or desk as a smart display, include the dock in your plans and check its local availability.
In Hub Mode, the tablet can show photos, cast content, display Google Home controls and respond to hands-free Google Assistant requests. Google lists uses such as playing music or video, answering questions, setting timers and controlling smart-home devices. Devices must already be configured in the Google Home app, and feature availability can depend on country, language and compatible devices.
Google’s setup guidance is to dock the locked tablet, configure Hub Mode, and set up Assistant and Google Home. Google recommends unplugging the tablet’s USB-C cable while using the dock for full Hub Mode functionality. Assistant remains available on the locked tablet, including in Hub Mode, even if the Gemini mobile app is set to replace Assistant while the tablet is unlocked; software behavior can change, so check the current support guidance if this distinction matters to your setup.

What it is like as a tablet
Lift it off the dock and the Pixel Tablet is a conventional Android tablet for apps, browsing, streaming and video calls. Google’s specifications list a 10.95-inch display, Tensor G2 processor, 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage in 128 GB or 256 GB capacities. It supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and Google Cast.
Google lists a 27 Wh battery and claims up to 12 hours of video streaming. That is the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not an independently reproduced battery-test result. The tablet charges through USB-C away from the dock, but it does not support a SIM or cellular data, and storage cannot be expanded with a microSD card.

Pixel Tablet Hub Mode vs. Nest Hub Max
The main trade-off is portability versus dedicated smart-display features. The Pixel Tablet detaches to become a general-purpose tablet; Google’s comparison documents features available on Nest Hub Max that Hub Mode does not offer.
| Capability | Pixel Tablet in Hub Mode | Nest Hub Max |
|---|---|---|
| Portable tablet use | Yes; remove it from the dock for Android tablet use | No general-purpose tablet mode |
| Guest users | Supported, according to Google’s comparison | Google lists multiple Voice Match voices and Face Match instead |
| Look and Talk | Not supported in Hub Mode | Supported, according to Google’s comparison |
| Quick Gestures | Not supported in Hub Mode | Supported, according to Google’s comparison |
| Home monitoring through cameras | Not available; Google says the tablet cameras lack Nest-style home-monitoring features | Nest Hub Max has home-monitoring features |
The Pixel Tablet can handle everyday home controls, but Google’s documented feature differences mean it is not a complete Nest Hub Max replacement. Android Central’s reviewer praised the dock speaker’s volume and the built-in Cast workflow in that review’s context; those are subjective impressions, not standardized comparative test results.

Buying considerations and accessories
- Charging Speaker Dock: Required for docking and Hub Mode, and sold separately according to Google. Check availability alongside the tablet; a dock is not interchangeable with a standalone smart speaker.
- Charging away from the dock: A USB-C cable and power adapter can charge the tablet separately.
- Case: Google’s Pixel Tablet Case adds a ring stand and can stay attached while the tablet docks and charges.
- Keyboard and stylus: Third-party Bluetooth keyboards and USI 2.0-compliant styluses are supported. This does not mean Google offers an official branded stylus.
- Water and dust: Google says the tablet, dock and official case are not waterproof, water-resistant or dustproof.
Availability and software support
Availability varies by market and retailer. When checked, the Google Store UK listing showed a price of £399 and marked the tablet “Out of stock.” A September 2026 TechRadar report described reduced availability across listings, but neither that report nor the UK listing establishes stock or discontinuation in every country. Check the Google Store and local retailers for current price, tablet stock and dock availability before buying.
Google’s Australian specifications page states “Five years of Pixel updates.” That statement does not by itself establish a specific support end date for every market; consult the applicable Google policy for the device and region rather than inferring one.
