The Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL hold up better than the base Pixel 9 in sustained graphics testing. Choose the Pixel 9 for the lower launch price, the 9 Pro for premium cameras in a compact size, or the 9 Pro XL for the largest display and battery.
This assessment draws on HotHardware reviewer Ryan Whitwam’s Pixel 9 series review, published August 27, 2024. The review’s T-Mobile observations, benchmark results and launch prices describe that review and testing context; they should not be read as a current carrier guarantee or today’s retail pricing.
How well do the Pixel 9 phones handle calls and mobile data?
HotHardware reported that all three phones support a broad range of sub-6GHz and millimeter-wave 5G bands. In its T-Mobile testing, the reviewer found speeds and reliability “in line with the best results from those other OEMs.” That is a favorable result for the tested network, not a promise of the same performance on every carrier or in every location.
Clear Calling uses AI to reduce background noise in call audio. Whitwam noticed the improvement, particularly when making calls outdoors, where environmental noise can make speech harder to hear.

Is Tensor G4 fast enough for everyday use and gaming?
Everyday responsiveness
Tensor G4 keeps much of the previous generation’s architecture but replaces the Tensor G3’s Cortex X3 with a Cortex X4 running at 3.1GHz. HotHardware linked that change to better single-thread performance. Its Geekbench 6 results were respectable in single-core workloads, while multi-core performance trailed current Qualcomm devices in the review’s comparisons.
The phones also use an Exynos 5400 modem, which the review identifies as adding satellite SOS, Wi-Fi 7 and broad 5G support. Those connectivity features are distinct from the processor’s benchmark performance.

- The power behind AI on Google Pixel - Google Tensor G4 is Pixel’s most powerful chip yet. It’s built for advanced AI like Gemini, cutting-edge photos and videos, and smarter ways to help all day.
- Gemini. Your built-in AI assistant - Gemini helps you supercharge your ideas. Hold the power button to start writing, planning, learning, and more.
- Pro-level photos and video - The triple rear camera is the most powerful Pixel Camera ever. Get up close with 30x Super Res Zoom. And it has super sharp, high-res video quality, even in low light and from far away.
- A first for video zoom - Pixel 9 Pro combines a powerful telephoto lens and advanced video processing to give you smooth, high-quality video up to 20x with Super Res Zoom Video.
- Brilliant and bright Super Actua display - With the brightest, most immersive Pixel display yet, you’ll see true-to-life colors, even in sunlight. And it runs up to 120Hz, for smooth gaming and scrolling.
Graphics and sustained gaming
The Mali GPU lagged current Snapdragon graphics in the review’s comparisons. GFXBench placed it around the level of flagship phones from one or two years earlier, so the Pixel 9 family is not the strongest choice for someone prioritizing top-end gaming performance.
However, the phones’ sustained performance varied by model. HotHardware repeated 3DMark Wild Life 20 times as a stress test. The two Pro models maintained more than 90% stability, while the Pixel 9 lost almost 30% over the full test. The reviewer said the Pro phones did not get too warm during the test and contrasted their result with some high-end Samsung phones that could lose about half their speed under sustained load. These are results from that specific benchmark, not a measure of every game or workload.

What differs between Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL?
The core buying distinction is camera coverage and size. The Pixel 9 has a dual-camera rear system; the Pro models add a 48MP 5× telephoto camera and a 42MP selfie camera. The Pro and Pro XL share that core Pro camera system, while the XL gives you the larger display and battery.
| Model | Display | RAM | Battery capacity | Rear cameras | Launch price listed by HotHardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 9 | 6.3-inch OLED, 1080 × 2424 | 12GB | 4,700mAh | 50MP wide and 48MP ultrawide | $799 |
| Pixel 9 Pro | 6.3-inch Super Actua OLED, 1280 × 2856 | 16GB | 4,700mAh | 50MP wide, 48MP ultrawide and 48MP 5× telephoto | $999 |
| Pixel 9 Pro XL | 6.8-inch Super Actua OLED, 1344 × 2992 | 16GB | 5,060mAh | 50MP wide, 48MP ultrawide and 48MP 5× telephoto | $1,099 |
The prices above are the launch prices listed in HotHardware’s August 27, 2024 review, not a statement of current pricing. The review’s hardware table does not give comparable brightness figures, so it does not establish which display is brighter.

How do charging options compare?
Google’s specifications distinguish the Pro XL’s wired fast-charge claim from wireless charging figures, which require a specific accessory:
- Pixel 9 Pro XL wired charging: Google says the phone can reach 70% in about 30 minutes with a Google 45W USB-C charger, sold separately.
- Wireless charging with Pixel Stand (2nd gen): Google lists up to 15W for Pixel 9, 21W for Pixel 9 Pro and 23W for Pixel 9 Pro XL.
The 70% figure applies to the stated Pro XL and Google charger combination; it should not be taken as a charging time for the other models or with any charger. The wireless figures are maximums specified for use with Pixel Stand (2nd gen).

Which Pixel 9 model should you buy?
- Choose Pixel 9 if the listed launch price is the priority and you do not need a dedicated telephoto camera. It has the same 6.3-inch screen size and 4,700mAh stated battery capacity as the Pro, but less RAM and a two-camera rear system.
- Choose Pixel 9 Pro if you want the Pro camera system and 16GB RAM in a 6.3-inch phone. It is the compact premium option, and it delivered the stronger sustained stability result in HotHardware’s test compared with the base model.
- Choose Pixel 9 Pro XL if you prefer a 6.8-inch display and the largest stated battery in the lineup. It shares the Pro camera system and RAM, and has the highest listed wireless charging maximum with Pixel Stand (2nd gen).
For gaming, the Pro models are the better-supported choice based on the review’s stress test, but neither is a graphics benchmark leader. For the Pro-versus-Pro XL decision, the camera hardware is essentially shared; the meaningful differences here are size, battery capacity and the listed wireless charging maximum.
