The Google Pixel 8 is a good fit if you want a relatively compact Android phone, a bright 120 Hz screen, and camera software that reviewers praised. Its drawbacks are also clear: there is no dedicated telephoto camera, and Tom’s Guide found its performance behind flagship rivals. For a used or refurbished Pixel 8 in 2026, the decision comes down to the actual price, condition, battery, and software-support time still remaining—not the original seven-year promise alone.
What the Pixel 8 offers
Google specifies a full-screen 6.2-inch display and a typical battery capacity of 4,575 mAh. Those are manufacturer specifications, not measurements of a particular used phone. Google describes the device as designed to comply with IP68 under IEC 60529 when it leaves the factory, but warns that it is not waterproof or dustproof and that resistance can diminish with wear, damage, repair, or disassembly. For its rear cameras, GSMArena lists a 50 MP main camera and a 12 MP ultrawide, with 4K video recording at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second. These specifications do not by themselves establish image quality. GSMArena’s Pixel 8 review
Pixel 8 pros
Compact size and a bright, smooth display
Tom’s Guide praised the Pixel 8’s brighter 120 Hz display and more compact design. Digital Trends likewise described it as compact. That combination is appealing if you prefer a phone that is easier to handle than larger models without giving up a high-refresh-rate screen. Reviewer impressions are not a guarantee of every user’s experience. Tom’s Guide; Digital Trends

Camera software reviewers liked
Tom’s Guide praised the Pixel 8’s camera features, and Digital Trends characterized it as camera-capable. That is a useful strength if you value Google’s camera experience, but it does not change the hardware limitation that there is no dedicated telephoto camera.
A long announced update commitment
Google says Pixel 8 updates are provided for seven years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. The clock does not restart when a later owner buys the phone. Google says updates may include feature drops and other software updates. Google Pixel Phone Help

Pixel 8 cons
No dedicated telephoto camera
The Pixel 8 lacks a dedicated telephoto camera, a drawback for people who regularly want optical zoom or a separate long-range camera. TechSpot lists the omission as a con. TechSpot
Performance is not class-leading
Tom’s Guide reported that performance trailed competing flagships. If demanding games, sustained heavy workloads, or top-tier benchmark performance are priorities, that assessment is a reason to compare alternatives rather than assume the Pixel 8 will match a flagship rival. Tom’s Guide

Long support does not guarantee a long-lasting battery
Android Authority raised the question of whether the phone is genuinely built to last the full seven years and noted that extended ownership can involve battery replacement. This does not establish a tested lifespan for the battery or predict how long any individual handset will last. Android Authority
Is the Pixel 8 worth buying used or refurbished in 2026?
There is no single current-price verdict: the right choice depends on your local offer, the unit’s condition, and the remaining update period. The available information does not establish 2026 prices, inventory, or regional availability, so compare listings in your market rather than relying on launch-era pricing. Tom’s Guide’s $699 figure was the US launch price in 2023, not a current recommendation. Tom’s Guide

Before buying, assess these factors on the specific listing and, where possible, the actual phone:
- Support remaining: Check Google’s current support information and count from the phone’s first US Google Store availability, not your purchase date.
- Battery and condition: The original 4,575 mAh typical capacity does not tell you the health of a used battery. Ask about battery condition and replacement history, inspect for damage, and read the seller’s return and warranty terms.
- Camera needs: Decide whether the main and ultrawide cameras suit you or whether you specifically need a dedicated telephoto camera.
- Performance: Consider whether performance that reviewers found behind flagship rivals is acceptable for your intended use.
- Price and provenance: Compare the offer with other phones available locally, distinguishing new, refurbished, and used listings. Verify the seller, stated condition, regional compatibility, and return policy.
Who should buy the Pixel 8?
| Buyer | How well it fits |
|---|---|
| Someone who wants a compact phone with a bright 120 Hz display | A strong match based on reviewer assessments of its size and display. |
| Someone who values Google camera features | Worth considering; reviewers praised its camera experience, but it has no dedicated telephoto camera. |
| Someone choosing a phone for the longest possible support from today | Check the remaining support period first; the seven-year clock began at initial US Google Store availability. |
| A buyer who prioritizes flagship-level performance or optical telephoto | Look closely at alternatives that better meet those specific needs. |
| A used-phone buyer who cannot verify battery or physical condition | Riskier purchase; the original capacity specification cannot establish the condition of the actual unit. |
Verdict
The Pixel 8 remains compelling for buyers who want a compact phone, a smooth display, and a camera experience that reviewers regarded favorably. Its shortcomings—no dedicated telephoto camera and performance that did not lead flagship rivals—matter more if those are priorities. In 2026, buy one only when the price and condition make sense locally and you have checked battery health and support time remaining.
