The Google Pixel 8 Pro remains a capable large-screen Android phone, with its strongest case resting on a bright adaptive display, flexible triple-camera system, and Google’s seven-year software-support policy. Its main drawbacks are battery endurance and charging speed in launch-era testing, plus weaker sustained performance than leading 2023 rivals. In 2026, whether it is worth buying depends on the price, condition, battery health, and how it compares with newer phones.
What are the Pixel 8 Pro’s key specifications?
Google launched the Pixel 8 Pro in 2023 with Android 14 and its Tensor G3 processor. The large-format phone has a 6.7-inch Super Actua LTPO OLED display and three rear cameras: a 50 MP main camera, 48 MP ultrawide, and 48 MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. See Google’s Pixel 8 Pro specifications.
The LTPO panel adapts its refresh rate from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. That range lets the screen use a high refresh rate when smooth motion matters and lower it when the displayed content is static.
What are the Pixel 8 Pro’s biggest strengths?
Bright, adaptive display
The display is a standout feature. In its October 2023 review, GSMArena measured 1,600 nits with adaptive brightness enabled and 954 nits in its manual-brightness test. Those are the outlet’s measurements, not Google’s separate peak-brightness specification; results in other conditions may differ. GSMArena’s review and test results provide the measurement context.

Flexible rear cameras, including 5x optical zoom
The dedicated telephoto camera gives the Pixel 8 Pro a longer optical reach than a main-camera-only setup, while the autofocus ultrawide expands its options for wider scenes. GSMArena’s launch-era verdict praised the ultrawide and telephoto improvements and described the camera system as a strength. That is not a guarantee of identical results in every scene: camera output varies with lighting, subject, movement, and personal preference.
Seven years of software support
Google’s current policy lists the Pixel 8 Pro among phones receiving seven years of OS and security updates, counted from the model’s first availability on the US Google Store. Pixel Drops may also bring features during that support period. Google’s Pixel update policy describes the current coverage. In its October 2023 launch announcement, Google said the commitment included the latest Android operating system, security updates, and ongoing Feature Drops, and framed support as extending into 2030. Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro announcement provides the original statement.

Pixel software features
Google promoted editing, calling, and other Pixel software features alongside the phone. Availability can depend on region, language, and software version. GSMArena noted that many advertised features were unavailable in its region during its 2023 review, so check the features you care about in your country rather than assuming they are universally available.
What are the Pixel 8 Pro’s main drawbacks?
Battery results were below the leaders in 2023 testing
GSMArena rated the Pixel 8 Pro at 90 hours of endurance in its 2023 test suite. In the same outlet’s reported tests, it lasted 16 hours 25 minutes in Wi-Fi browsing and 19 hours 33 minutes in offline video playback. These are lab results from that review, not a prediction of current everyday runtime: battery condition, software, network reception, settings, and workload all affect how long a particular used phone lasts. The reviewer characterized its battery life as below average and behind leading rivals in its contemporary comparison.

Charging is not especially fast
Using Google’s official 30 W charger, GSMArena measured a full charge in 1 hour 23 minutes in 2023. The phone supports wireless charging up to 23 W with Pixel Stand, while generic Qi pads charge at lower rates, according to the outlet. Google specifies wired charging with a compatible 30 W USB-C adapter; the adapter is sold separately. Charger, cable, and charging conditions affect actual results.
Sustained performance trails the strongest contemporaries
GSMArena found that Tensor G3 did not match the leading absolute performance of the day and did not handle sustained load as gracefully as top rivals. That launch-era comparison is useful context for demanding, extended workloads, but it does not establish how the phone compares with 2026 models or prove that ordinary tasks feel slow today. No current independent retest is established here.

Is the Pixel 8 Pro worth buying in 2026?
It can make sense if you want Google’s camera approach, a large adaptive display, and long stated update support, and you find a well-preserved device at a price that reflects its age. The model launched in 2023, so assess a specific listing rather than treating it like a current-generation flagship.
Google’s US refurbished store displayed a 128 GB refurbished Pixel 8 Pro for $649 when accessed on October 4, 2026, with other storage options shown. That is a dated listing example, not a guaranteed current price or stock level, and it is not a new-device price survey. Google’s US refurbished listing may change. Google’s historical US launch price was $999, with retail availability beginning October 12, 2023; that launch price is not a current value benchmark.

Before buying a used or refurbished unit, check these specifics:
- Condition and battery: Look for clear grading, battery-health information if available, and a return window that gives you time to test the phone.
- Seller and warranty: Confirm who is responsible for support, what the warranty covers, and how returns work.
- Storage and network compatibility: Verify the storage capacity and that the unlocked model works with your carrier and local bands.
- Current alternatives: Compare the actual price with newer phones for camera and video quality, battery life, charging speed, sustained performance, software support, size, and storage.
- Feature availability: Confirm that any Pixel software features you value are available in your region and language.
For context, GSMArena compared the Pixel 8 Pro with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max in 2023, and reported longer battery life for those rivals. That is a historical comparison, not a ranking against newer phones or a current buying recommendation.
Pixel 8 Pro review verdict
The Pixel 8 Pro’s enduring appeal is its combination of a bright adaptive screen, useful camera range, and unusually long update commitment. Its weaknesses—battery endurance, charging pace, and launch-era sustained-load performance—matter most when a newer alternative is close in price or when buying a used phone with uncertain battery condition. At a discount, with condition and returns verified, it can still be a reasonable choice; at a price near newer flagships, compare carefully before deciding.
