Google Photos on Android and iPhone can trim videos, change playback speed, crop and rotate footage, export a still frame, and apply visual adjustments and filters. Android’s documented tools also include adding text and downloaded music, plus some device-specific audio controls. The exact menu depends on your device, operating system, and feature availability.
What Google Photos can edit on mobile
Google’s Android video-editing guide and iPhone and iPad guide document a shared set of core tools. The guides do not promise that every control appears on every device.

How to edit and save a video
- Open the clip. In Google Photos, select the video you want to edit, then tap or click Edit.
- Choose an editing tool. Use the tool row or tabs shown in your app. Select a control such as Trim, Crop, Speed, or Adjust; the available labels and tools can vary.
- Make the change and preview it. For a trim, drag the handles to keep the portion you want. For other edits, adjust the displayed controls and review the result.
- Save the edited version. Follow the save control shown in your app; Google’s instructions commonly direct users to save a copy. This preserves the original rather than treating a still-frame export as an edited clip.
Trim, stabilize, and improve the image
Trim the beginning or end
Open Trim and drag the handles at either end of the timeline to select the section to keep. Preview the selection before saving the edited copy.
Stabilize shaky footage or enhance it
On Android, Google places Stabilize and Enhance under Auto. Stabilize addresses shaky footage; Enhance adjusts color and lighting. These controls are documented for Android, so do not assume the same menu is available on iPhone.

Adjust brightness, color, and contrast
Depending on the device and app, adjustment controls can include brightness, contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, warmth, tint, and vignette. Adjustments are useful for correcting how a clip looks, but they do not change its framing or playback speed.
Apply a filter or effect
Choose a filter to give the video a different overall look, and adjust its strength where that control is offered. Effects are a separate option in Google’s editing instructions. Availability is subject to the platform requirements below.

Crop, rotate, and straighten a clip
Open Crop to change the framing. Choose an aspect ratio if you need a particular shape, rotate the video in 90-degree increments, or use the straighten control where available. Android’s guide also lists mirroring and automatic straightening for some videos. A crop changes which part of the image is visible; it does not alter the clip’s duration.
Change playback speed
Use the speed control to select a segment with the trim handles, then choose one of the documented rates: 2× or 4× for faster playback, or ½× or ¼× for slower playback. The same rates appear in Google’s Android and iOS guides. Preview the selected segment before saving.

Export a still frame from a video
Use Export frame or Export Frame to save a single image from the video. This produces a still photo, not a newly edited video clip. Choose a moment in the clip that you want to capture, then use the export-frame control.
Android-only documented additions: text, music, and audio
Add text
Google’s Android guide documents adding text to a video. The cited iPhone and iPad editing guide does not list this workflow, so its availability on iOS is not established by that guide.

Add downloaded music
On Android, Google documents selecting a downloaded song, choosing the portion to use, and adjusting both soundtrack and original-video volume. Google Photos needs permission to access music and audio for this workflow. Google’s Android creations guide says music accompanying a Highlight video is for personal, non-commercial use only; do not treat that music as cleared for monetized use.
Use the audio controls available on your device
Google documents muting on non-Pixel Android devices and Audio Eraser on Pixel 8 and later. These are not universal controls across Android phones or a feature set shared with iPhone.

Check your device’s requirements
Google attaches different requirements to different tools. The cited help pages do not give a single app version that guarantees every listed feature on every phone or tablet.
- Android: Some crop, straighten, and filter features require Android 6.0 or later and at least 1 GB RAM. Selected adjustment and filter/effect tools require Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB RAM. Google says video editing is not supported on non-Pixel devices running Android 9.
- iPhone and iPad: Google’s guide requires iOS 16 or later. Adjustments and effects require at least 3 GB RAM.
Menus and access can also vary by device or rollout. If a tool is missing, check the operating system and RAM requirements for that feature, then look for the control in the current Google Photos app.
Separate creative tools: Photo to video and Video remix
Google Photos also has AI-assisted creation features, which are different from ordinary clip editing. Google’s Android creations guide and iPhone and iPad AI guide describe Video remix templates for changes such as background replacement, relighting, and art styles. The guides specify a backed-up source video under 60 seconds and a selected segment from one to ten seconds. Access and generation limits can vary; Google says a Google AI subscription can provide more generations after a user runs out, and the details may change.
Google’s September 23, 2024 announcement described the refreshed editor and AI presets as beginning to roll out at that time. It does not establish that every feature is now available to every user.
