Google News can bring reach through referrals; direct traffic can include returning readers, but the label alone does not establish loyalty or identity. Compare the two using your own source-level revenue, conversions, engagement, and repeat visits over the same period.
What the two traffic sources tell you—and what they do not
Google News is a referral channel that publishers can identify in analytics. Google says visits with the referrers news.google.com or news.url.google.com come from the Google News app and browsers. Its measurement guidance recommends on-page analytics and points publishers to Google News performance reporting in Search Console.
Direct traffic is an analytics source category, not proof that someone typed your address, knows your brand, or has visited before. Treat it as a channel to measure, then test whether its visitors return, engage, or convert. Google’s News Consumer Insights discusses analysis by traffic source and reader segment; its Reader Revenue playbook recommends examining conversion rates across channels.
How to compare their value
First decide what “valuable” means for your publication: advertising revenue, paid subscriptions, contributions, reader growth, or some combination. Then compare Google News and direct traffic against the same outcome and on the same basis.
#1 Best Overall
| Question | What to compare | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Which source brings readers? | Visits or users by source over the same date range. | Reach is useful, but volume alone does not show business value. |
| Which source earns more? | Ad revenue per visit or user, plus subscription and contribution conversions by source. | Different audiences and browsing behavior can produce different revenue outcomes. |
| Which source builds engagement? | Visits and pages per user, return rate, newsletter opt-ins, and known-reader share. | These measures help test whether a source is associated with an ongoing reader relationship. |
| Is the traffic credible? | Referrer patterns, geography, unusual spikes, engagement, and finalized earnings. | Artificial or incentivized visits can distort traffic and advertising measures. |
Keep the comparison consistent: do not compare sessions for one source with users or conversions for the other. Use the same date range and attribution rules, and separate Google News from Google Search traffic where your analytics setup allows it. Track both advertising and reader revenue if both matter to your business.
Use repeat visits to test reader loyalty
Google News Consumer Insights groups readers by visits in a 30-day period: Casual Readers make one visit, Loyal Readers make 2–14, and Brand Lovers make 15 or more. Google’s page says Loyal Readers and Brand Lovers together account for about 20% of a publisher’s audience and 80% of pageviews. These are Google’s guidance figures, not a universal result or proof that a particular traffic source causes loyalty.
Rank #2
Use segments such as these alongside source-level data. For example, compare the share of Google News and direct visitors who return or become known readers, rather than assuming that direct visitors are already loyal. News Consumer Insights includes source and reader-segment analysis and recommends focusing on sources that bring the most traffic or revenue.
What headline benchmarks can—and cannot—show
Google reports that a PwC study of 218 publishers in 38 countries estimated an average value per click of US$0.06–US$0.08, and US$0.13–US$0.15 for regional and local publishers. Google describes these as clicks from Google Search and Google News together. The page does not state the study year or establish a separate value for either channel, so these figures are not a Google News-versus-direct comparison or a current universal benchmark. See Google’s account at How Google supports the news industry.

No direct-versus-Google-News revenue-per-visit benchmark is established here. Google’s separate claims on paid subscribers and publisher revenue share for Reader Revenue Manager are not evidence that either source converts better. Your publication’s own comparable results are the basis for deciding which channel is more valuable.

A sudden rise in visits is not necessarily a sign of more valuable readers. Google warns that some third-party traffic providers may generate artificial visits or clicks. Review unusual changes by source, geography, referrer, and engagement, and compare estimated with finalized earnings. Google’s Resources for Publishers explains its traffic-quality guidance.
Rank #4
Research on tracking and ad-impression prices is relevant to advertising economics but does not establish which of these two traffic sources performs better. A 2023 paper by Laub, Miller, and Skiera studies the economic value of user tracking; it should not be used as a substitute for a source-by-source publisher comparison. The paper covers tracking availability and ad prices, not Google News versus direct traffic.
