Its biggest catch is important if you already own Google mesh hardware: older Google Wifi and Nest Wifi points cannot join a Nest Wifi Pro mesh, so upgrading means replacing the old mesh rather than extending it.
What Nest Wifi Pro does—and who it suits
Nest Wifi Pro is a tri-band router system with 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz Wi-Fi. It is most appealing if you want a mesh network managed through Google Home, have Wi-Fi 6E-capable devices that can use 6 GHz, or value its Matter support and integrated Thread border router.
It is a weaker fit if your main goal is to reuse an older Google mesh, need wired connections faster than 1 Gbps at the router, or expect the advertised combined wireless speed to translate into that speed on one device. Google’s published specifications describe capabilities; no independent benchmark results are established here, so they do not support a lab-tested performance ranking.
What Wi-Fi 6E adds
The 6 GHz band gives Wi-Fi 6E-capable clients another band to use. A device must itself support Wi-Fi 6E to connect on 6 GHz; older Wi-Fi devices can still connect on compatible bands, but they do not gain 6 GHz access. Google describes this compatibility in its Nest Wifi Pro product information and its Wi-Fi 6E explainer.

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
The practical benefit depends on your actual devices and network environment. Before buying for 6 GHz, check whether the phones, laptops, or other clients you care about support Wi-Fi 6E. If most of your devices do not, the band is not a reason by itself to expect a noticeable improvement on those clients.
Advertised speed and coverage: read the limits
Google lists Nest Wifi Pro at up to 5.4 Gbps combined. This is a manufacturer-rated aggregate maximum across the system’s bands, not a measured single-device speed or a promise of internet throughput. A client uses only the capabilities it supports, and real results also depend on broadband service, channel width, local radio regulations, network conditions, placement, and the building.

| Configuration | Google’s stated coverage |
|---|---|
| One Nest Wifi Pro router | Up to 2,200 sq ft |
| Two-router pack | Up to 4,400 sq ft |
| Three-router pack | Up to 6,600 sq ft |
These are Google coverage estimates, not guarantees for a particular home. Walls, floors, construction materials, router placement, and signal conditions can reduce usable coverage. Treat the figures as a starting point when choosing a pack, not as a precise map of where every device will get a strong connection. Google publishes the estimates on its product page.
Ports, modem requirement, and technical specifications
Nest Wifi Pro is a router, not a modem. It needs an existing modem and broadband service. Each router has two Ethernet ports rated for wired speeds up to 1 Gbps, so the wired port limit matters if your plan or local network requires a faster-than-gigabit connection to or through the router.

The 100-device figure is conditional, not a guarantee that 100 busy devices will perform well at once. Google’s specifications and qualifications are on its technical specifications page.
Smart-home support: Matter and Thread
Google lists Matter support and an integrated Thread border router, which can be useful in a Google Home smart-home setup. These features do not make the system compatible with older Google mesh points, and Matter-device compatibility can depend on the device, region, and configuration. Check the current compatibility information for the particular smart-home device you plan to use.

Can you add Nest Wifi Pro to an older Google Wifi or Nest Wifi mesh?
No. Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be mixed into a mesh with earlier Nest Wifi or Google Wifi points. Additional Nest Wifi Pro routers can act as points within a Pro mesh, but older points cannot extend it. Google’s setup guidance covers the compatibility restriction.
Moving from an older Google mesh
Google’s migration guidance says to remove the existing Wi-Fi network and then set up Nest Wifi Pro as a separate network. Removing the old network erases its stored configuration, so settings need to be recreated. Reusing the old network name and password may allow devices to reconnect without manually changing their saved credentials, but it does not preserve the old network configuration.

Google Home supports only one Wi-Fi network per home, and Google advises against running the old and Pro networks in the same location because they may interfere with each other. Review Google’s migration instructions before replacing a working setup.

Setup requires a Google Account and one or more Nest Wifi Pro routers. Google’s setup guide uses the Google Home app; additional Pro routers are added as points. Follow the in-app setup flow after connecting the primary router to your modem and broadband service.
Google’s release page lists software version 3.78.518349, dated February 23, 2026, with mesh performance and robustness improvements plus stability and security vulnerability fixes. Google says its Wi-Fi devices receive automatic updates. The listed release date does not independently confirm when a particular router received the update. Quick Recap
How to decide whether it is worth it
- Consider it if you want a Google Home-managed Wi-Fi 6E mesh, can use 6 GHz on at least some of your devices, or value its Matter and Thread capabilities.
- Plan for a full mesh replacement if you currently rely on Google Wifi or older Nest Wifi points; those units cannot be reused as points in the Pro mesh.
- Check the wired limits if you need Ethernet above 1 Gbps at a router.
- Size coverage cautiously: use Google’s per-router and pack estimates as broad manufacturer guidance, then account for your floor plan, construction, and router placement.
- Compare it with alternatives using the Wi-Fi generation and bands your clients support, independently measured throughput and latency under comparable conditions, coverage in a similar home, Ethernet speeds, app and network controls, modem requirements, and smart-home needs. Google provides its own product details and Wi-Fi 6E explanation; those are not independent comparative tests.
