Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) is a compact, 7-inch smart display for household media, voice assistance and compatible smart-home controls. Its standout extra is optional, camera-free Sleep Sensing, which uses Soli radar and other sensors to create sleep summaries. That makes it an interesting bedside display, but not a medical tracker: it follows one person, needs careful setup and can be affected by placement and nearby movement.
What the Nest Hub (2nd gen) is for
Google positions the Nest Hub as a shared screen for a kitchen, bedroom or other common area. You can use voice or touch to play YouTube and streaming content, check household information, set timers and alarms, manage calendars and reminders, and broadcast messages to Nest devices. It can also show feeds from compatible Nest cameras and doorbells. Smart-home control depends on the particular device and service, so compatibility is not universal. Google’s product page
For a Google Home household, its practical appeal is having these controls and information on a screen rather than relying only on a phone or voice speaker. It is also a camera-free option for a bedside display. The experience is less compelling if you need a large, high-resolution screen or a device that can identify and track several sleepers.
Display, sound and hardware
The display measures 7 inches diagonally and has a 1024 × 600 resolution. Google’s UK specifications list a 43.5 mm full-range speaker, three far-field microphones, a microphone-off switch, a DC power jack and a 15 W power adapter. Sensors include Soli radar, Ambient EQ for adjusting the screen to room lighting, and a temperature sensor. The listed dimensions are 120.4 mm high, 177.4 mm wide and 69.5 mm deep; weight is 558 g, and the included power cable is 1.5 m. These are the specifications on Google’s UK specifications page.

The screen’s resolution is modest by tablet standards, but the Hub is designed for at-a-glance information and household interaction rather than detailed work. Google said at launch that the speaker delivers “50 percent more bass than the original Hub.” That is Google’s own comparison, not an independent audio measurement. Google’s 2021 launch announcement
How Sleep Sensing works
Sleep Sensing is optional and off by default. When enabled and configured for a sleeping area, low-energy Soli radar—Google’s Motion Sense technology—detects movement and breathing from the person closest to the display. The Hub’s microphones can detect nearby coughing or snoring, while its light and temperature sensors can register environmental changes. Google says the feature does not use distinguishable images of a person’s face or body, and it does not require a camera or wearable. Google’s launch announcement; Google’s Sleep Sensing FAQ
After setup and calibration, the Hub can provide sleep summaries and answer questions such as when you went to bed or how much REM sleep it estimated. Those summaries are estimates from a consumer device, not clinical measurements. Google’s help examples show the kinds of questions users can ask, but do not establish clinical accuracy. Sleep Sensing limitations
- It tracks one sleeper. Google says the feature tracks a single person and does not uniquely identify that person; it does not support multiple users sharing a sleep-tracking area.
- Setup and placement matter. You need to configure the sleeping area and calibrate the feature. Google says that movement, placement, nearby devices, pets or another person in the area can affect readings.
- It is not a health diagnostic. Google states that Sleep Sensing is not intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, prevent or treat any disease or condition. Do not use its sleep stages, sound-event detections or summaries as a substitute for medical advice.
These qualifications make Sleep Sensing best understood as a convenience feature for a single sleeper who is comfortable with a nearby display and willing to set it up carefully—not as a replacement for a medical assessment or a multi-person sleep system. Google’s Sleep Sensing FAQ

Privacy controls and data handling
Google distinguishes between audio processing and other sleep-related data. It says coughing and snoring audio is processed on the device and is not sent to Google. When Sleep Sensing is enabled, sleep-related data can be shared with Assistant and made available in Google Fit. Google says the data is not used for ad personalization and can be reviewed or deleted. Google’s launch announcement; Google’s Sleep Sensing FAQ
Google says you can turn off sound-event tracking and personalized suggestions, pause sensing, or deactivate Sleep Sensing. These controls do not mean that every category of sleep-related data remains only on the Hub; the distinction between on-device audio processing and data shared with Assistant or Fit matters when deciding whether to enable the feature. Price and regional caveats
When checked on October 8, 2026, Google’s US product page showed $99.99, while its UK specifications page showed £89.99. These are page observations, not guaranteed current offers; availability and pricing can vary by location and change over time. Google also says unusual-sound alerts require Google Home Premium, so check the current regional product details and subscription terms if that feature matters to you. Who should buy it?
- A good fit: someone with compatible Google Home devices who wants a compact screen for household controls, media, timers and information, or a camera-free bedside display with optional single-person sleep summaries.
- Think twice: anyone who needs high-resolution viewing, multi-person sleep tracking, reliable readings despite pets or frequent movement near the bed, or a device that serves as a medical sleep monitor.
Before buying for smart-home control, confirm that the specific lights, cameras, doorbells or other devices you own are supported. The Hub’s usefulness depends more on that compatibility and your intended placement than on a broad promise to control every connected product.
