In Google Messages, RCS sends messages over mobile data or Wi-Fi and can add features such as typing indicators, read receipts, and high-resolution media. SMS/MMS travels through your carrier and provides a simpler fallback when RCS is unavailable. The important privacy distinction is that only eligible personal RCS chats between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted; SMS/MMS is not.
RCS vs. SMS/MMS at a glance
| What matters | RCS in Google Messages | SMS/MMS in Google Messages |
|---|---|---|
| How it sends | Over mobile data or Wi-Fi; Google or a carrier may provide the RCS service. | Through your mobile carrier. |
| Features | Can support typing indicators, read receipts, file sharing, high-resolution photos, and enhanced group chats. The available features depend on support in the conversation. | Basic text and multimedia messaging; it does not provide RCS features such as typing indicators and read receipts. |
| Who can use it | RCS must be available and enabled for everyone in the conversation. Availability depends on carrier and region. | Can be used when RCS is unavailable or not being used, subject to carrier service. |
| End-to-end encryption | Available for eligible personal chats between Google Messages users with RCS enabled. It does not apply to every RCS conversation. | Not end-to-end encrypted. |
| What the app shows | The compose field says “RCS message.” When end-to-end encryption is active, a lock icon appears in the conversation. | The compose field says “Text message”; the app can label a message SMS or MMS below the send icon. |
These are distinctions between messaging protocols and how Google Messages uses them, not a guarantee that one mode will always be available or deliver in a particular way. Google’s feature and security descriptions are available in its RCS security help page and encryption help page.
How to tell which kind of message you’re sending
Look at the compose field before sending: Google Messages indicates whether it will send an “RCS message” or a “Text message.” The app may also show an SMS or MMS label under the send icon. For encryption, look for a lock icon on the send button or beside the message timestamp; that indicates an end-to-end encrypted conversation, not merely that the message uses RCS.
You can also check RCS status in Google Messages settings. Google’s current setup guidance is in Turn on RCS chats in Google Messages. Exact availability and status depend on the device, recipient, carrier, and region.

Why a message may send as SMS or MMS instead
Google Messages checks whether the recipient or all members of a group can use RCS. If someone does not have RCS enabled, or RCS is unavailable for the conversation, the app may use SMS/MMS instead. A change in connection or carrier support can also affect whether RCS is available. The fallback is not the same as a guarantee of seamless delivery: SMS/MMS still depends on carrier service, and switching away from an eligible encrypted RCS chat means messages sent in SMS/MMS are not end-to-end encrypted.
Switch an undelivered RCS message to SMS/MMS
If an RCS message has not been delivered, Google Messages may let you switch that message to SMS/MMS. Open the undelivered message and use the available option to resend or switch it as a text message. The wording can vary with the app version and the message state. See Google’s instructions in Control message delivery.

What RCS encryption does—and does not—cover
Google says personal RCS chats between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted by default when both people use Google Messages and have RCS enabled. Confirm the lock icon in the conversation rather than assuming encryption from the RCS label alone. If the conversation loses eligibility for RCS encryption, messages sent or received in that state are not end-to-end encrypted. SMS/MMS is never end-to-end encrypted in Google Messages.
When end-to-end encryption is unavailable, Google says RCS chats on its infrastructure use Transport Layer Security (TLS) between the user and Google. TLS protects data in transit on that leg, but it is not end-to-end encryption. Google also says its infrastructure may temporarily queue RCS messages for delivery. These protections should not be described as equivalent to a lock-marked, end-to-end encrypted chat; details are in Google’s RCS security documentation.

RCS chats with iPhone users
Google says RCS can connect Android and iPhone users where supported, but iPhone RCS availability depends on region and carrier. Google Messages conversations with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted, even when they use RCS. Availability of RCS and end-to-end encryption are separate questions. Google’s RCS FAQ explains these limits.
RCS chats with businesses
Business RCS chats may show a verified checkmark and branded identity, and can include media, interactive elements, or action buttons for tasks such as support and order tracking. Google says these conversations are managed by businesses, messaging providers, and carriers, and are not end-to-end encrypted. See Google’s information about RCS chats with businesses.
