Google Messages RCS offers richer messaging and can be end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) when a conversation meets specific requirements. SMS/MMS is simpler carrier texting and can serve as a fallback, but it is not end-to-end encrypted. RCS depends on compatible service and data or Wi-Fi; neither option is universally more reliable in every situation.
How Google Messages RCS differs from SMS
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the internet-based messaging option in Google Messages. It can use mobile data or Wi-Fi, with service provided by Google or a carrier. SMS/MMS uses carrier messaging instead. Google Messages can fall back to SMS/MMS when RCS is unavailable.
| What matters | Google Messages RCS | SMS/MMS |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Mobile data or Wi-Fi, plus compatible RCS service. Availability varies by region and carrier; a data plan may be needed. Google explains RCS availability and requirements. | Carrier messaging; in Google Messages, it can be used when RCS is unavailable. |
| Features | Supports high-resolution photos and videos, file sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and richer group chats. Google Messages’ feature listing describes supported features. | Does not provide the RCS feature set. |
| Encryption | Eligible conversations can be E2EE. If E2EE is unavailable, Google-provided RCS uses TLS, which is not the same protection. Google describes RCS security. | SMS/MMS messages are not E2EE. Google explains encryption in Messages. |
| Compatibility | All participants in a conversation need RCS enabled, and service must be available. | Can provide a fallback path when RCS is not available. |
When is an RCS conversation end-to-end encrypted?
Google Messages automatically enables E2EE for eligible RCS conversations. Google’s stated requirements are that both participants use Google Messages with RCS chats enabled and have mobile data or Wi-Fi available. A lock indicator in the conversation is the practical signal that E2EE is active. SMS/MMS is not E2EE.
E2EE protects messages while they travel between devices; it does not, by itself, guarantee that nobody can access them on a device. Backups and apps with granted message or notification permissions may provide access. When Google-provided RCS is not E2EE, Google says it uses TLS for transport. TLS and E2EE are different: TLS protects a connection, whereas E2EE is designed to prevent intermediaries from reading a message in transit. Google’s RCS security information also explains that Google-provided RCS travels through Google’s infrastructure and may be routed to another provider’s RCS infrastructure; some RCS service is carrier-provided.

Android–iPhone encryption is still a rollout detail
On May 11, 2026, Apple announced that E2EE for RCS was beginning a beta rollout for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Apple said encryption is enabled by default and would be enabled automatically over time for new and existing RCS conversations. That announcement describes a conditional rollout, not confirmation that every carrier, device, or chat is covered. Check the lock in the specific conversation. Apple’s May 11, 2026 announcement has the rollout details.
Why an RCS message may send as SMS
RCS needs compatible service and an internet connection. If RCS is unavailable—for example, because a participant does not have it enabled or data/Wi-Fi is lost—Google Messages may send using SMS/MMS instead. That fallback changes the message’s security: an SMS/MMS message is not E2EE, even if the conversation was previously encrypted over RCS.

- Check the compose area: Google says a “Text message” label means the message will be sent through carrier SMS/MMS. Google’s RCS help page explains the label and RCS availability.
- Check the conversation: Look for the lock indicator before sending sensitive information. Its presence indicates an eligible E2EE chat; do not assume protection from the app or contact alone.
- Choose whether to send: If the message is sensitive and the lock is absent, wait until E2EE is available or use a communication method you know is protected. If delivery is more important, SMS/MMS fallback may help, but it is not E2EE.
Is RCS more reliable than SMS?
There is no evidence here for a universal winner or a quantified difference in delivery rates or uptime. RCS depends on data or Wi-Fi, compatible devices and settings, and availability through the relevant provider. SMS/MMS uses carrier messaging and may remain a fallback when RCS is unavailable. Which works better at a particular moment depends on the connection and service conditions.
RCS is useful when its richer features or E2EE are available. SMS/MMS can help preserve compatibility when RCS cannot be used, but it has fewer features and no E2EE. Google’s documentation describes fallback and availability conditions rather than comparative performance statistics. Google Messages’ listing and Google’s RCS help provide service and feature details.
