A Google Messages beta build suggests the app may remove the “Only send SMS & MMS messages” option for individual conversations. Google has not confirmed the change or given a release date, so the per-chat setting is not established as removed. If you need to turn RCS off now, Google still documents an app-wide switch.
What may change in Google Messages
Android Authority reported on October 6, 2026, that strings in Google Messages beta version messages.android_20261002_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic point to removing the per-conversation SMS/MMS override. The reported strings include: “The ‘Only send SMS & MMS messages’ setting is going away. Switch now, or let it update automatically.” Another string reads “Switch to RCS chats now.” Android Authority’s report says the wording appears in the beta code; it is not a public Google announcement.
Because this is an APK teardown of work-in-progress code, the change may not reach a public release. The report gives no rollout date. Treat the setting as potentially at risk, not as already removed.
Why the per-chat setting matters
The override lets you use SMS/MMS in one conversation while leaving RCS enabled for other chats. Turning RCS off in the app’s main settings is broader: it changes RCS availability across your conversations. If Google removes the individual override, the reported alternatives are to use the global switch or rely on SMS/MMS fallback when RCS delivery fails.

How do I turn off RCS in Google Messages?
- Open Google Messages and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Messages settings, then RCS chats.
- Turn off RCS chats.
These are Google’s documented steps for the app-wide setting. Google says, “It’s not advised to turn RCS chats on and off,” because toggling may remove you from group chats. See Google’s RCS setup and troubleshooting guidance.
Can I send SMS instead of RCS to one contact?
The “Only send SMS & MMS messages” control is the per-conversation option identified in the beta report. The report suggests it may go away, but does not establish that it has been removed from the current public app or say when that could happen. If the setting is available in your version, it offers the one-chat scope; the documented RCS switch affects the app more broadly.

What if I no longer have my old phone?
If you cannot access the device where RCS was enabled, use Google’s RCS deactivation portal. Enter your phone number and verify it with the six-digit code sent by SMS. Google says you will be removed from all RCS group chats if you do not turn RCS back on within 30 days. The portal is for deactivation when the old device is unavailable, not a per-contact preference.

Google lists high-resolution photo and video sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, messaging over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and group-chat management among RCS features. SMS/MMS does not provide those RCS features in the same way. Google says end-to-end encryption is available when communicating with other Google Messages users; that should not be read as a guarantee that every RCS conversation is encrypted. All participants must have RCS enabled to use RCS features. See Google’s overview of RCS messaging.
