Google Messages effects and iMessage effects do not transfer wholesale between Android and iPhone. Apple’s text, bubble, and screen effects require iMessage, while Google Messages camera-effect images can be shared in RCS chats with iPhone users. RCS supports useful cross-platform features such as high-resolution media, typing indicators, and read receipts, but it does not make the two apps’ proprietary effects compatible.
How Google Messages and iMessage effects differ
The key distinction is what an “effect” changes. Google Messages offers both effects applied to message content and visual treatments applied to a photo or video. Apple’s message effects animate text, a message bubble, or the whole screen, and are part of iMessage.

Do iMessage effects work on Android?
No. Apple says, “To send message effects, you need iMessage.” A conversation with an Android phone uses RCS, if available and enabled, or may use SMS/MMS; neither turns Apple’s text, bubble, or full-screen effects into cross-platform features. Can iPhone users see Google Messages camera effects?
Yes, if the image is sent in an RCS conversation: Google says camera-effect images can appear in RCS chats with iPhone users. The visual treatment is part of the photo or video being shared; it does not cause an iPhone to play Google Messages’ screen effects or Apple’s iMessage effects. What RCS adds between Android and iPhone
RCS is an interoperability layer, not a shared effects system. When both sides and their services support it, an Android-to-iPhone RCS conversation can offer:
- High-resolution photos and videos
- Typing indicators
- Read receipts
- Group-chat management or features
Google and Apple document these capabilities for RCS, though the exact experience depends on device, software, carrier, region, and settings. They improve the conversation but do not transport proprietary Apple or Google animations as interchangeable effects. (Google Messages Help; Apple Support)

Check compatibility and turn on RCS
On Android with Google Messages
- Open Google Messages, then go to Messages settings → RCS chats.
- Check that RCS is enabled and its status says connected. Google says participants need RCS enabled for an RCS conversation. (Google Messages Help)
On iPhone
- Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 18 or later and that its carrier supports RCS.
- Open Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging and enable RCS if the option is available. (Apple Support)
RCS availability on iPhone depends on country or region and carrier, so the setting may not be available to everyone. If RCS is unavailable, the conversation may use SMS/MMS instead.
What changes if the conversation falls back to SMS or MMS?
SMS/MMS does not make either platform’s proprietary effects compatible. Google documents additional regional limits for reactions: on SMS/MMS, reactions can be applied to text but not media received through MMS in the United States, France, Canada, and Australia. Google also offers a U.S.-only setting that displays iPhone reactions as emoji for English text messages. Encryption and animation caveats
Google says Android-to-iPhone RCS conversations are not end-to-end encrypted. Google’s end-to-end encryption applies to RCS conversations with other Google Messages users, not cross-platform RCS with iPhone users. (Google Messages Help)
If an effect does not animate, motion or accessibility settings may be responsible. Apple points users to Reduce Motion settings when effects do not play, and Google Messages lets users disable expressive animations.
