Merchants can set up cart transfer to their own site, native checkout on Google, or both. The hub is rolling out gradually: Google’s documentation describes availability in the United States, with Australia and Canada expected to follow early the next year, and native checkout is in early access for select merchants. Access and supported features may change as rollout continues.
What the UCP integration hub does
The hub brings key setup and validation tasks into Merchant Center. Google describes it as a place to configure an integration, run real-time API tests in sandbox and production, validate checkout or cart endpoints, and monitor implementation status. It is a workflow for merchants building a UCP integration—not a switch that automatically adds checkout to every product listing.
Google’s current documentation scopes the described commerce experience to products sold in the United States. It says the hub is gradually rolling out in the United States, with Australia and Canada to follow early the next year. Checkout is available only to select merchants in early access. To display the Buy now button in that checkout experience, a listing needs the native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) product attribute. These availability details are subject to change.
Google also says an integration must be approved before it can go live on AI Mode in Search and Gemini. Having a configured account or passing API tests alone does not establish that the integration is approved or available on those surfaces.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the UCP capability that matches your checkout
Google documents two commerce paths: transfer a cart to the merchant’s site, or provide native checkout on Google. Merchants may implement either or both. Identity linking is an optional capability that can be selected only with native checkout.
| Capability | Where the shopper completes the purchase | What it supports | Validation implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cart transfer | On the merchant’s site | Transfers a populated cart to the merchant using a continue_url. In UCP version 2026-04-08, the initial Cart API supports cart creation and transfer through CreateCart; it does not support synchronizing, updating, or deleting cart contents. |
Test cart operations in the sandbox and complete the cart-transfer validation checklist. This path is separate from native checkout and does not require payment handlers or order lifecycles. |
| Native checkout | On Google | Uses endpoints to create, update, and complete checkout. | Test native checkout actions; production validation also includes order-status webhooks and agreeing to the UCP Program Addendum. |
| Identity linking (optional) | With native checkout | Uses OAuth 2.0 to support loyalty benefits and authenticated checkouts. | Select it only with native checkout and complete the applicable validation requirements. |
If you choose both cart transfer and native checkout, Google’s guide says both capability checklists apply. The documented limits for Cart API version 2026-04-08 are specific to that version’s initial release; they should not be read as a statement about every later UCP release.

Prepare Merchant Center and your UCP profile
Keep account information current
Google recommends keeping product feeds, shipping and returns information, brand assets, and business contact details complete and up to date in Merchant Center. These account details are part of preparation for a UCP integration; implementing UCP does not replace maintaining accurate Merchant Center information.
Publish a public UCP profile
Your UCP profile is a publicly accessible JSON document at your domain’s /.well-known/ucp path. It declares protocol versions, capabilities, service endpoints, payment configuration, and public keys. Google says the profile must not require authentication. The capabilities you select in Merchant Center should match the capabilities declared in the published profile.

Use separate API keys for staging and production
The hub’s testing setup uses dedicated API keys, with separate keys for staging and production. Keep the environments distinct as you move from sandbox tests to production validation.
How setup and approval work
- Implement your chosen capability. Build the relevant UCP endpoints and publish the profile at your
/.well-known/ucplocation. Make sure its declared capabilities match the selection you plan to configure in Merchant Center. - Configure Merchant Center. Select cart transfer, native checkout, or both. Select identity linking only if you are implementing native checkout. Prepare the dedicated staging and production API keys.
- Test in sandbox. Use the hub’s sandbox tests to simulate cart operations or native checkout actions, as applicable. Resolve integration issues before proceeding to production validation.
- Validate in production. Publish the profile, select the capabilities being implemented, and complete the applicable validation checklist. For native checkout, this includes order-status webhooks and agreement to the UCP Program Addendum.
- Wait for Google’s review. After the validation checklist is complete, Google Support reviews the integration and notifies the merchant whether it is live or needs further setup. Approval is required before going live on AI Mode in Search and Gemini.
Do you need to change your Merchant Center account?
Google’s guidance is to keep your existing product feeds, brand assets, return policies, and business contact information complete and current. For UCP specifically, you will also use the hub to configure capabilities, test APIs, and validate readiness if you are building an integration. The documented setup does not mean every Merchant Center account needs to adopt UCP.

What the Cart API’s initial release does—and does not do
For UCP version 2026-04-08, Google documents an initial Cart API release centered on creating a cart and transferring it. The merchant responds to CreateCart with a continue_url that takes the shopper to a populated cart on the merchant’s site. The documented initial release does not synchronize, update, or delete cart contents. Cart transfer is not native checkout: it does not require payment handlers or order lifecycles.
That distinction matters when choosing an implementation. Cart transfer hands the shopper off to your site to continue the purchase; native checkout uses endpoints to create, update, and complete the checkout on Google. Treat the stated Cart API scope as version-specific, rather than assuming it describes later releases.
