For Chromebook’s 10th anniversary on March 9, 2021, Google announced Chrome OS features for connecting to Android phones, capturing and finding files, and handling everyday work. The package also covered accessibility, school deployments, and enterprise management. The anniversary marked a milestone for Chromebooks, first launched with Acer and Samsung in 2011.
What new features did Chrome OS get for its 10th anniversary?
Google’s March 9, 2021 announcement grouped the consumer-facing changes around phone integration, file handling, productivity, and accessibility. Some features were described as available in the announcement, while Nearby Share was identified as coming in the following months.

Phone Hub is a built-in Chromebook control center for selected Android-phone functions. Google product director Alex Kuscher described it as bringing “key capabilities from your Android phone to your Chromebook.” In the March 2021 announcement, those capabilities included viewing texts, checking the phone’s battery and cellular signal, turning on its hotspot, locating it, and opening recently used Android Chrome tabs.

Wi-Fi Sync addressed a related but separate task: connecting to trusted Wi-Fi networks associated with the same Google Account, so users did not have to repeatedly enter credentials on each device. The announcement’s scope was Android phones and other Chrome OS devices tied to that account.
How did Tote and the other productivity features work?
Screen Capture and Tote
Screen Capture added tools for taking precise screenshots and recording the screen. Tote was a shelf for recent downloads and captures, as well as files the user pinned for quick access. Together, the features were intended to make both creating and retrieving files more direct.

Clipboard, Quick Answers, and Desks
- Clipboard: Retained the last five copied items, making it possible to select a recent copy rather than only the most recent one.
- Quick Answers: Offered definitions, translations, and unit conversions from a right-click.
- Desks: Supported moving windows between workspaces and restoring windows after a reboot.
Google also moved media controls into Quick Settings, consolidating them with other system controls.

Google framed Chromebooks as a long-running education effort: engineering director Archana Krishna said early school pilots began in 2010, before the first Chromebook launch in 2011. The company described growth through partnerships with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. Its education article referred to more than 40 million in the Chromebook education ecosystem; that phrasing does not establish a count of Chromebook devices.

The school-related capabilities highlighted included Zero Touch Enrollment, improved support for Meet and Zoom, screen capture and Tote for lessons, support for eight Desks, and Select-to-Speak controls for pausing, changing speed, and navigating text. Google had announced eight years of automatic-update support in 2020. That is a historical statement about the support policy announced then, not a guarantee of the remaining update period for any Chromebook bought today; check the specific model’s current update-support information before purchase.
For remote learning, these capabilities addressed setup and day-to-day use, but they do not by themselves establish that every Chromebook is suitable for every student. Buyers still need to consider the school’s required apps and management, the device’s form factor and connectivity, and accessibility needs. What did Google add for Chrome OS enterprise management?
Google’s enterprise retrospective said it made more than 500 Admin console policies available and launched the Chrome Policy API, initially covering user and printer settings. These tools were aimed at organizations managing devices centrally rather than individual users configuring a standalone Chromebook.

Google also reported that U.S. Chrome OS business shipments grew 68% year over year in the 2020 comparison, citing The NPD Group. This is shipment growth for that geography and period, as reported by Google in 2021—not a measure of Chromebook sales worldwide or current market share. How did Chromebooks evolve over the decade?
Google’s retrospective traced the original idea to a cloud-first computer designed to be fast, secure, easy to use, and automatically updated. It highlighted the Chromebook Pixel in 2013, the first Chromebook with USB-C in 2015, Titan C security chips in 2017, centralized management through the Admin console, and background updates every few weeks. These are milestones cited by Google in its Chromebook history post; they do not mean that every model shares identical hardware or support characteristics.
Which Chromebook brands and accessories are compatible?
Google named Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung as Chromebook hardware partners. The anniversary retrospective also cited more than 20 Works With Chromebook accessory partners, including Anker and Logitech. That establishes the named ecosystem, but not compatibility for every product from those brands. Check the compatibility listing for the particular accessory and Chromebook model, especially for docks, chargers, and other peripherals where ports and device requirements matter.
Google’s named example devices included the Acer Chromebook Spin 513, ASUS Chromebook CX9, Dell Latitude 7410 Chromebook, HP Chromebook 14b, Lenovo ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook, and Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2. The examples span consumer and business lines; the anniversary announcement is not a current buying guide or confirmation of present-day availability.
