Google Maps documents a dedicated Wheelchair accessible option for transit directions. Apple Maps documents walking preferences to avoid stairs and hills, but its reviewed transit guide does not document an equivalent wheelchair-accessible transit filter. That makes Google’s transit setting the clearer starting point for screening itineraries—not a guarantee that a route, station, sidewalk, or destination will be usable.
What each app documents
| Need | Google Maps | Apple Maps | What it means for planning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transit directions | A Wheelchair accessible option filters transit routes. Google provides instructions for Android and iPhone. | Transit directions show information such as departure times, connections, and fares. The reviewed Apple guide does not document a wheelchair-specific transit filter. | Google has the clearer documented wheelchair-specific transit control. Check each leg with the transit agency. |
| Walking directions | Google Maps offers walking navigation, but its reviewed help does not establish a universal wheelchair-safe pedestrian route. | On iPhone, walking preferences can avoid hills, stairs, or busy roads, and the guide describes previewing elevation. | Avoidance preferences can help shape a route, but do not confirm curb cuts, surface quality, closures, or usable gradients. |
| Place-access details | Some place listings may show entrance, restroom, seating, parking, and elevator attributes. This feature is available only in certain countries. | No comparable set of wheelchair venue attributes is documented in the reviewed Apple pages. | Missing or sparse listing details mean access is unknown, not necessarily absent. |
| Availability | Instructions cover Android and iOS; place accessibility information depends on country. | Apple says feature availability varies by country or region; the documented walking controls are for iPhone. | Check the app and local feature availability in the region where you will travel. |
Set up Google Maps for a transit route
- Enter your destination and open Directions.
- Choose Transit.
- Open Options and select Wheelchair accessible.
- Review the proposed itinerary, then verify stations, transfers, and access with the relevant transit agency.
Google describes this as a filter for accessible transit routes. It is a screening aid: the feature does not establish that every station entrance, elevator, or connection is available or working at your travel time.
Check place information in Google Maps
Google says wheelchair-accessibility attributes can indicate whether a business has accessible entrance, restroom, seating, parking, or elevator access. It also notes that wheelchair-accessible places are shown in certain countries only. A listing attribute is not an independent inspection and does not confirm that every part of a venue is usable. Google Maps lets users suggest corrections and add accessibility details through edits or reviews, so details may vary in completeness.
Use Apple Maps walking preferences
- On iPhone, request walking directions to your destination.
- Open the route’s avoidance options and choose to avoid hills, stairs, or busy roads as appropriate.
- Review the route and elevation information, then check local conditions for any sections that matter to your trip.
Apple describes these as walking-route preferences. They may help avoid particular features, but they are not documented as a wheelchair-specific route guarantee. Apple also notes that spoken turn-by-turn walking directions and immersive instructions are not available in every country or region.

How to choose for a real trip
- For transit itinerary screening: try Google Maps’ wheelchair-accessible option, then confirm the actual stations and transfers with the transit agency.
- For a walking route: Apple’s avoid-stairs and avoid-hills preferences can be useful, but neither app’s reviewed documentation establishes a complete wheelchair-safe pedestrian route.
- For a destination: inspect any access attributes available in Google Maps and contact the venue if a specific entrance, restroom, or other feature is essential.
- For time-sensitive access: check elevator status, accessible entrances, curb and sidewalk conditions, and service changes with local sources.
Feature availability and local data vary, and the reviewed product documentation does not establish city-level completeness or route accuracy. Treat an app result as a plan to verify—not proof of step-free access.
